Hi Billy, that "new" valve SHOULD NOT BE DRIPPING WATER. It is either a second hand one or it is faulty. I just sit riveted to the screen watching this series of yours. Absolutely wonderful. Regards from South Africa
@@ThePethericks that’s good I noticed that also good it is fixed now You such a Amazing person Billy you see potential where no one else sees ……Looking forward to see you tackle this project….Blessings Billy
Man, my office used to be in the basement of an old 1950's court house here in the states, and the amount of weird stuff I'd hear working overnights, boots on tile steps, keys jingling, furniture moving around when there's no-one else in the building. I can only imagine what that place is like on a quiet night. So cool to watch!
The linen fabric you found probably was used by the nuns to make their habits , as well as altar cloths for the 💒 ALSO since it was a hospital long ago Bed sheets and bandages. The rope lines in the attic may gave been to dry bandages in the winter since the lines were not very high from floor. We are used to disposable bandages but they could not afford all that linen. They would have boiled the diety linens. Also as women they needed sanitary napkins which women made from old bed linens and they were washed also 8n boiling hot water but to dry them...they would have been discreet.
Yes, I believe you are right about sanitary napkins. Bandages would have been kept closer to the hospital areas, no point putting them up in the attic.
If you removed all of the old insulation from the attics, you just might find some interesting artifacts from the days when the place was actually in use as a convent. Then it would just be matter of replacing the insulation with new.
looking at those roof cavities, with that fluffy insulation. Would probably be best to replace all that with more modern insulators and then board it over the top to add a little extra, and also add more storage space and not have to worry about falling through the ceiling below.
Everything is moving along nicely Billy! I do wish you would wear a mask when you go up into that attic that worries me for your lungs! Fantastic video as usual and grateful for the take along😊Keep them coming... you have us all captivated and on the edge of our seats! Do you take care of yourself see you on the next one.🥂🙏
Loving this video! Ghost cam and Nun cam 🤣! Those funnel shaped weights I believe could be for sewing to hold down the fabric when cutting it out. Maybe the nuns made the garments for several churches around the region? Such an exciting project! 🤗❤️🇨🇦
I was curious about the label "Grosse etoffe". Google translate said it meant "big fabric" but a native French speaker friend clarified it meant "thick fabrics". So the boxes of linen scattered about would be consistent with thick or heavy fabrics in storage. I also wonder if maybe the portioned off space was used as a bedroom or even a hospital room depending on what was going on in the community at any given time. The picture of Christ on the cross was a nice one, not a simple label for storage. It was meant for contemplation or an aid to prayer. Also it looks like there was an old fashioned nightgown hanging on a nail or hook in the corner of the partitioned off space.
I translated Grosse etoffe from German and I got "Big Things." In English "stuff" is also used to describe a fabric. Maybe it was a place for storing bed linens. It reminded me of the saying "from litte things, big things grow." It also reminded me of those motivational room decor-things you can get at the dollar store.
Grosses etoffes are big cloths, so that would cover anything from table cloths for trestle tables to cloths used to cover and preserve furniture when a room was not being used.
Another wonderful video! That staircase is amazing, and goes all the way up to the attics, I wonder who paid for all of that. I have come across some old photos of the convent and hospital online. It seems that Sadie apartment was an add on..u can see that the present wall with the gate is not symmetrical and to me has always looked off.. the front wall,of ‘Sadie’s apartment is the left side of the original gate. Can’t wait to see what you have found in the way of iron gates. I have found census record for the town of Ernee, a census was taken every 5 years, they date from 1836 to 1936. The names of the people who lived there are listed and what their jobs were. All very interesting and I have been down a few rabbit holes of religious history and the history of hospitals inFrance.
What's most interesting about the attic is the level of detailing on the bannister etc. Almost as though they came from another older structure and the nuns used it because it was cheaper than having a new staircase etc being built and installed. Otherwise why would you go to the bother (& expense) of installing such ornate work just for an attic?
Progress, progress, progress! Interesting to see the arch forms! Seems like the nuns ran a textile mill of some sort. Not uncommon for nuns to make lace or linens. Crack on Billy!
Wow! That attic was creepy! You wouldn’t have caught me dead up there rifling around. I give you lots of credit and look forward to your videos every Sunday.
I like that you examine mundane things, appreciate them and put back where they were. Thanks for letting us explore with you. The convent is a treasure.
The hand-hewn wooden beams, old masonry frames, & discarded bits & bobs that say so much about the past are all priceless. Not spooky up there in the daytime, the attic echos with history. Cheers to another fab update & good luck getting the bell & gates.✌
Hi Billy😎 you’re so brave up there exploring by yourself haha I wish you would wear a mask to protect from mold spores… thanks for sharing your journey through this spectacular project
Hello Billy boo 😊 Long time no see" Very excited to see how all is coming along.... Ahhh brilliant 👏Truly I was just going to sagest Buying Camaras lol lol 🤭 I do believe my dear friend Just a few ghosts about Billy Making sure all is well.... Ahh Don't be scared... I find this Just fascinating 👍 Lovely video boo please do more Soon I'm missing you all so much Really... I'm actually on the mending from a accident so I need to see More of your daily videos please 🙏 Will ttfn: give my love to the family please 💞💐
I agree, that staircase is gorgeous...what a fun expedition, wonder if anyone on the outside saw you open that window...the ghost perhaps...lol...exciting about the bell and gates, I'm just blown away by all the exterior work you've done already...those roses, DIVINE!!!
As they died, where did the bury the nuns? Can you check a nearby cemetery to see if you can find their graves? That would be interesting. Do you have any of their names? It would be great to research to see who they were and how long they were there for. Would love to know the back story. The history of the nuns and priests.
I was wondering this too. Often nuns would be buried in the grounds of their convents, but that doesn't seem to be the case here, unless they are in the part of the garden that has not been cleared yet.
Fascinating tour! I believe the old linen pieces were worn out garments that are ripped up and used for rags and cleaning. Anyone that lived through the early part of the 1900’s knew how much they saved everything and reused it. My mother had rags like that her whole life. You are correct the ropes were for hanging wet laundry. I recognized that right away. I am sure they hung the laundry up there especially in the winter or rainy season.
Looks like cleaning out that attic to discover and organize all its treasures, and then replacing the insulation, definitely needs to be added to the "to do" list! (Although I'm sure that list must be very long already!)
Given the large amount of fabric, ropes, and sewing/spinning tools, I'm guessing the nuns ran a business in this particular space. The room might have been a workroom and the attic at large used for storage for the business. I wonder if the order has records of a business being run? That said, hospitals need lots and lots of linen.
Hello Billy, The building is so huge, every time I watch your fabulous videos I am amazed. All the time you were in the attic I was wishing you had a special mask on. 😷 Fibre glass too, please wear one in future. I would have been terrified of mice or rats even though there is nothing to eat. Buy something has been or is nesting up there. Ditto another comment the drip from the new water pipe connection isn't very reassuring. I hope the plumber sorted this out. It's very interesting to watch these historic discoveries. Xxxx🌟🥰
From the drone footage we can see the amazing improvement to the yard. You really are moving at an amazing space. When you say there are part of the convent you are not going to use, what do you mean?
There are but not as many tribes in the land that became the u.s. made permanent structures like mexican/ central/south American indigenous people did. (Aztecs etc.)
Billy : sometimes you make a funny and you don't even realize it and then just carry on.....I chuckled when you said " the nuns must have been smoking , its a hard HABIT to quit ".......nuns wear habits so it was a double entendre.....you make me laugh , thanks Cherryl from Canada
Is there a local historian who could provide information about people who lived or worked at the new property you purchased? I enjoy your videos and the improvements you are making.
Hi Billy, I’ve been watching Sadie’s Vlog to see some work going on. She and Mo are working hard. I even saw a flash of you when you came upstairs and sat on the floor at the end of the vlog. Sadie said you are getting the main floor apt ready for a family member but she said you’d tell us who it is. So… who is going to live in the 1st floor apt and can we watch you finish it up, Please? Thank you 🤞
Was so looking forward to this as I am each and every week! Loved the pun when you found the old pack of cigarettes and said it's an old "habit" to break! With all that insulation up in the attic, do you wear a mask at all? And walking all across the attic on that insulation. I'm sure the flooring is sturdy, but man I would be leery. Great job and love your videos! I sure hope you get the bell and the gates! Thanks Billy!
A spooky huge attic to say the least and I’m not the least surprised that you feel itchy after being up there. Huge step upgrading the plumbing. The convent grounds look better and better as the weeks go by. xx
Spectacular videos, Billy! I think a whole family sleepover in the convent would make some great video!!! 😁😁😁 What an outstanding property! And all your new discoveries! I can’t wait for the bell replacement and the new gates! Cheers! 😊❤️🎶👏👏👏🏆💡💡💡🇨🇦🇫🇷
Billy, thanks for showing us the creepy attic, you’re brave going up there on your own. The cones filled with sand could have been stands for religious statues, to give more stability to the icon.
Would love to see you let the dogs loose with the trackers on in the Convent. Imagine they find something new and unknown 😳. Also they can reach new bits in the gardens to. Even a gobro fixed to either just for fun. Plus love the dogs forest exploits 😆.
I wonder if these little cubby holes you find, decorated with saintly artwork, might have originally been used as somewhere for a few moments of quiet prayer out of the way of everyone and everything!!
Great news about the bell and gates. Looking forward to that adventure! Love all the work being done, it is so nice to see this lovely old structure coming back to life.
Billy, so cool discoveries!! The carry thing you found that looked like it was meant to carry something? This typically would have been used to parade a Sacred Heart of Jesus, Virgin Mary or a patron saint figure in a pilgrimage. Depending on the convent it may have been richly decorated or gilded the cushions would have been elaborate or not, as would the statue in the old Catholic tenant's this convent would have fallen under. It's something that belongs in or near your Chapel.
It is called a bier...they have been used since ancient times. Our church used one on Christmas eve with a baby Christ child ...the priest would go before it with incense. It was draped 8n white satan , rather ornate. ALTAR BOYS CARRIED THE BIER.
That was really interesting Billy! I was so nervous about you walking around on the insulation, because usually attics have areas that might not be boarded. I assume the entire floor is boarded? If they used to dry sheets up there, maybe the little 'room' was a place to sit and rest, must have been hard carrying wet sheets up those stairs!
Enjoyed wandering the attic - thank you! - but you should wear a ventilator up there. The insulation could have asbestos or spun glass, which has no way to be cleared from your lungs... you and your family are as hard a working group as I've seen! Patti from central Kentucky - Horse country - USA
That attic is a huge renovation project regarding getting all that failing insulation out and putting in new stuff. So excited you might have found a bell and new gates. Looking forward to next weeks vlogs. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
The first video about the convent got suggested to me, and since I started watching yesterday I am absolutely invested. I wish I was a professional ghost hunter, because I would LOVE to spend a few nights there and ghost hunt, hahahaha. Absolutely gorgeous building and I appreciate that you are restoring so much of the old features! Good luck on all the work that everyone still has to do!
I have a question for you! Why don’t you wear the proper mask when you are up in the attic and spaces like that to protect you from contaminants caused from mouse and rat droppings and other things that might be contained in what has been stored in the attic! My family has done renovations and one of them got very ill from breathing in contaminants Caused by rat droppings!
Watching you walk through that insulation made me very itchy ☺️ thanks for sharing as you explore the convent. So happy you were able to source a new bell and gates for the convent. Steve is doing such great work clearing the courtyard and the buildings of the old dead ivy. The place has come a long way in a short time!
Always so fun to see these rarely seen parts of an old building. I would be fun to put all the found items together and see how they can be reused or displayed somehow. Thanks for sharing once again Billy.
Wow Billy it’s amazing how your channel is growing like crazy. Look at the views on the last few videos and subscriber numbers are high. You’ll be at 1 million before 2023z
loved the ghost mouse! May not explain the foot steps, but if i was a kid in that convent, id have to run up and down those halls. Nuns would hate it, which would add to fun.
Walking through attic with the flashlight is so creepy, especially when you find obvious signs of humans/animals being up there. Like any second you are going to come across some Gollum-type troll creature hiding in a corner that’s been living up there for 50 yrs. Bleaahhh! Thanks for the tour though!
Absolutely fascinating stuff. The staircase is beautiful. I can see some osmo coming its' way in the future. Pau is a long way for you to drive. It is a beautiful city and full of history. You may want to plan a day or so there for the vlog. It is where Napoleon used to go on holiday, so it should be worth the trip. I wonder if those ropes in the attic were for drying personal items. Can't have the nuns underwear on a washing line in full view! The convent does have a creepy feel to it, but it is very old, so lots of creaking wood. Good luck.
That attic is huge!! I think like others that maybe you should replace the insulation. You never know what treasure you could find 😁👍take care all, Jan 👍🥰
I'm so happy you got the little cameras! Hopefully they will capture more than little mouses moving things about! Do you think the footsteps are ghosts? I wonder what was on that property before the Convent? I wonder if there are any underground tunnels connecting wings of the structure? 💗
cameras is a fantastic idea. only way to make sure there're no intruders other that Spirits, rats, and spiders. the attic makes me itchy just watching this.😱
Hi Billy & family Awesome video shout to California USA yeah love the hat. I'm from California living in Texas USA. Billy you're the best owner for this building, stay healthy and lots of happiness 🌟👍❤️😁
I think those funnels were used as weights, probably for holding down scenery pieces or props for ceremonies and events etc. They're portable and heavy, and the context (coloured paper and fabric) supports the idea that this is where they stored such material.
Thanks for the tour today. Very interesting and I wii be here as often as I can. I am an 80+ year and I am totally enjoy watching the changes being mad in this lovely convent. CRACK ON 😊. Texas, USA 🇺🇸
I hope you're wearing a mask when you're in the attic. As for the footsteps you're hearing and other things, maybe you could get the convent saged to get rid of anything negative.
Saged? No, I think perhaps a blessing by a local parish priest would be more appropriate, with a small donation to the church for this short traditional ceremony. A few spoken prayers by the priest, plus his (optional?) sprinkling with holy water, should do the trick! 🙏🙏 When I was a child, a parish priest came to our new home for a house blessing, which was common at the time but not so much now (depends on local and/or one's family custom).
Those funnel looking things... They look like the items that you would put on windowsills or up on the ridge line of the roof to keep birds from roosting or nesting on there. I live in the United States in the state of Pennsylvania and I worked across the street from our state capital. My job took me into the capital rather regularly. They had those on all the exterior windowsills and at different points along the roof where they had issues of pigeons roosting.
So many stories in the attic, don't you wish we could find out how it all got there. thanks for the interesting tour, and I cannot wait to see what the camera find.
You are all doing a fantastic job restoring the grounds back to how they used to be........Please please say at some point you are going to completely empty out those loft spaces of all the very very old insulation (if not old but definitely infested).
Pau is really nice, enjoy yourself there. With some nice weather there are beautiful views from the Boulevard de Pyrenees. And get yourself some chocolate with basque pimento.
I'm loving this. Came to this channel from life of ryan and wow that convent is amazing. I always wanted to renovate my own place but my ex husband was not a DIY person, so he preferred buying a house that needed minimum work. But when I get the money I'm going to try and renovate my own house and update it a bit as it was built in the 1950s and even though it has some amazing bones, it looks very outdated now
Thank you Billy,it mad me feel itchy too. I would be inclined to move all the old Linen and wood from the attic ,and may be you could use the panelling some where, the small Arch formers could make nice decoration for somewhere, very interesting,xx
