In this video Chloe Jade Travels to Iraq as a solo female American traveler.
This video was recorded over a week of travel in December 2021.
Sadly, many people in the USA think that Iraq is a completely different reality than it is. The reason for this is partially because of our political history with the country, but also because of what has been portrayed in the media time and time again.
Although my footage is nothing similar to what I would film now, I really enjoyed sharing shorts of this trip. I hope I can somewhat relay the beauty of this country, and why everyone should visit Iraq if they get the chance.
The main video is about 40 minutes long, and there is an 18 minute Q&A at the end.
If you have other questions please leave them in the comments, I will try to answer as much as I can.

You should visit Kenya. Very loving ppl. Oh, and you didn't need a visa anymore. It's visa free!!! The Kenyan president himself invited anyone to visit. People are 👌. Yes, Kenya is not as developed. Yes, you'll probably be culturally shocked...but I think ppl are pretty nice. Visit Ethiopia as well. I have heard that ppl are pretty nice as well.

One thing i have learned as ive neared my 60th birthday is that people are very much more similar than different. People love life, want health and good things for their family and children. I think any religious pilgrimage that requires walking, there are several, helps build your religious dedication. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Our health was way better before US invasion because all food products were organic. Saddam was a socialst ruler I know you hate socilasm because it is demonized by western media and never experinced. I hate Saddam but his socialist ruling system was right. We still have nostalgia to socialism and believe it is the better choice. But USA insists Iraq be capitalist.

About your comment regarding buying in the market; In many countries it is considered polite to haggle at the market and shop keepers will hike up prices to both make a profit even if you haggle, not just to make tourists pay more. In Zambia I haggled quite a bit at Livingstone because the tourist markets had everything at a high price, but at the town market in the village I spent most of my time, the shopkeepers would offer me small discounts (usually if I bought something like cookies in bulk or I really liked the item, like my first of two chitenges I bought). However, I was told by my patron during the trip that it doesn't matter how much you spend as long as you're happy with what you spent. So while I highly recommend finding out of haggling is acceptable where you're going, I'm happy you were glad to contribute to the economy. Iraq is such a beautiful country so I would definitely be having that on my bucket list (along with other Levantine countries)

I totally agree in some circumstances. And also can be detrimental to NOT haggle, mainly bc it can raise prices. I probably didn’t explain it fully. But in this instance I felt like especially bc the market is SO dead now, it was more helpful to pay an affordable price. Especially bc $30 doesn’t even go a long way in Iraq. So it’s definitely dependent on the situation in my opinion. But for instance if I was in Turkey and with someone who had never been there I’d prob have the same idea as Zaid 😂

Most Iraqis do hate Saddam, those who love him are a minority who benefited from his rule, at the expense of others. This does not mean that Iraqis wanted the American invasion though, a lot of Americans don’t seem to understand this. As bad as Saddam was, the U.S. was arguably worse.

@@DearBill hello there You don't have to be a Muslim to visit Iraq but you have to respect people , thier religion and thier culture which I think an ordinary behaviour and required thing everywhere And about that person Salwan he doesn't live in Iraq right now . Yes, Iraq and Iran are very different, people hear Islam and instantly think there are morality police etc, and that they are exactly alike.

I think that Iraq is pretty openminded about the hijab, like in Indonesia. Except for some religious sites, you don’t need to cover your hair all the way long. I saw some local women didn’t wear hijab either.

For examples when the king order something which was really important they wrote it down on the paper ,put the paper in this one and sending it to a reciever. So it would be safe from thief's, bugs or... Which can hurt the letter

You did speak rather in a very soft low voice in the your Baghdad scenes, not a whisper per se, but much quieter and a bit over a whisper. Many Iraqi's hated Saddam and wanted him gone but also don't care for the US invading and destabilizing the country and causing a lot of damage and destruction that is still being rebuilt to this day, and I agree, it was not smart and gave terrorists like ISIS to proliferate. Power vacuums are never a good idea.

40:20 yes children play football in the streets and they are LOUD . We Adults go to malls and find comfort in ordering stuff online through Instagram shops that deliver to your door , summer is hell on earth here currently August 22 and the temperature is 46 Celsius. It's 2 p.m as im typing this from baghdad ,winter is cute , no dust storms and awful electricity in winter. People dance and sing through The pain yes , we have so many unserious songs and many sad songs too , even our music is bipolar, outside of school we meet our friends through lying to our parents especially us girls, the main destination is the mall. There is radio and there used to be newspapers untill year 2013 where I remember my dad being genuinely sad that there won't be any printed newspapers of his favourite , and so we bought many tvs and dad started to have worse eyesight because of the tv and this was around the same time the news were all ALL about deaths of iraq civilians EVERY SINGLE DAY just like Gaza currently. You don't need vpn we have our way to watch Netflix without supporting it with our money, it is super easy to buy electronics here both the Chinese and American.

Ive heard of the prison. I imagine they do not want a lot of people coming there, for various reasons. Ive seen bricks made by using mud and vegetation. It is a very cool thing, once again we run into "who thought to do this process first?"

56:00 you don't have to wear it especially as a foreigner but if you're going to a mosque then yes u must dress modestly and cover your hair , just to pray there and then get out and take it off :)

I really like your review it’s really realistic and if you ever like to visit again I would really love to give you my own list of beautiful places in Baghdad different from the ones you visited, (and btw you didn’t really need to wear a long dress I live in Baghdad and I never wear hijab and I wear what I like but religious cities are different ofc)

@@Chloejadetravels I would really recommend staying a bit longer in Baghdad, you would definitely enjoy Al zawraa park and concerts in Al yarmouk, our old churches ,mansour street at night is amazing and as an Iraqi girl I could really help a lot while staying there

Thank you so much for this amazing video, especially for clarifying the difference between Iraq and Iran. As an Iraqi, it really pisses me off when ignorant people do know the difference. As for Saddam, no one liked him, aside from his family and friends but after the war the US has brought it fake democracy, Iraq is currently ruled by thugs and thieves who are appointed by Iran, the US has handed Iraq over to Iran, so most Iraqis now wish we still had Saddam because what we have now is much much worst. They are turning Iraq into Iran, which far worse than having a dictator.

i'm from Baghdad and it's dependent on the place like it's not safe walking alone at 11 pm in a dark street ( not because you're American because you're just a girl) but if u were ridding a car will be safe and it's safe if you were in the centre of the city at 12 am or 11 pm it will be a lot of people and families shopping and friends hanging out so it's sooo safe and you will be welcome to iraq and u have to go the north of iraq cuz there's a lot of beautiful natural 💗

U dont need to repeat ”yes this time i was eating chicken”. No one will judge you, actually no one care if u are vegan or meat eater. We should neutralize the conversation. Lets people eat what ever they want. Its fine if u said once ”yeah btw i used to eat meat, but not any more” but repeating it makes it sound dumb.

I’m realizing now I said it many times 😂😂😂 but to be fair, on socials people would probably ask if I didn’t say multiple times bc I make it a pretty big deal that I don’t eat meat. So clarification is key. And also personally it’s a personal moral reason so 🤷🏽‍♀️

40:36 there are karaoke places here in baghdad and some guitar and piano schools for beginners, there are Internet cafes to play PlayStation games, my twin brother went to these places every single day, but i as a girl feel more safe if i went there with a big group of girlfriends so..yea misogyny has a long way to go but us the new generation are trying hard to change it .

The oldest is The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco founded in 859 AD. University of Bologna was oldest in university in the Western (European) world
