Come with me as I journey from Tijuana to La Rumorosa, and Casa de Piedra - with a pit stop in the Pueblo Magico Tecate!
La Rumorosa also refers to the famous road that crosses the Sierra de Juárez Mountains in Baja California, which is part of Mexican Federal Highway 2D. This was completed in 1917 under the governorship of Esteban Cantu. Before this road was constructed, land travel between Tijuana and the rest of Mexico required travel through the United States.[1]
Initially, this road was a two-way street only somewhat dangerous due to the wind in the region and the steep grade of the road, as well as the recklessness of some drivers to try to finish this stretch of highway faster, causing numerous accidents. Currently there are two two-lane roads each, one upstream and the other downstream, with improved marking and consequently, a significant reduction of accidents. However, even with security measures, the road is still considered one of the most dangerous for inexperienced drivers, so it is always advisable to observe a minimum safe distance, to not exceed the speed limit, and use engine braking whenever possible. Headlights are advised in adverse conditions.
Tecate is a city in Baja California, Mexico, and the municipal seat of Tecate Municipality. It is on the border with Tecate, California, United States and is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. There is a small port of entry between the sister cities that serves as an alternative to the bustling ports of entry in Tijuana. As of 2019, the city of Tecate had a population of 108,860 inhabitants, while the metropolitan area has a population of 132,406 inhabitants The city sits at an elevation of 540 metres (1,770 ft) above sea level. Tecate is best known outside of metropolitan San Diego-Tijuana for Tecate beer and being the home of author Daniel Reveles. Tecate beer is one of the most popular beers in Mexico.
La Rumorosa: Once you cross the first toll booth in the direction of Tijuana-Mexicali, you only have to go half a kilometer to find one of the best secrets of La Rumorosa, the famous Casa de Piedra (Stone House).
It is rumored that this construction was a gift from Ex President Luis Echeverria to Maria Felix. Others believe that it exists since the times of Al Capone and that here, the gangster stored whisky barrels. The only thing certain is that the house was built in the 1950s by engineer Manuel Maldonado Sánchez, to be a luxury residence.
After being abandoned 20 years later, la Casa de Piedrae was restored to be visited by tourists. Therefore, you can appreciate its rooms connected by stacked stone walls, a pool and a terrace. The place has a vantage point to appreciate some curves of La Rumorosa.
Another true fact about la Casa de Piedra is that it operates as a geopark of the granodiorite order, commonly called granite stones that are between 50 and 70 million years old.
One way to explore it is by rappelling and climbing its rock formations. There is also a zipline circuit, interpretative trails of flora and fauna and a camping area. This last activity is only offered under previous reservation.
