Watching this stirs up old memories. Lived in little bricks until age 9 until we moved to Plainfield. I ran those playgrounds as a kid. Good and bad times there.

I’ve lived in both Seth Boyden and Little Bricks before. Those were the little projects. Many in Newark like Baxter Terrace. Hyatt Ct. Pennington Ct. Riverview Ct., etc. Then we had the hi-rise projects like Dayton St. Prince St. 7th Ave. Grafton Ave. Hayes Homes, Mercer St., etc. Been to all of them.

Hey Marty, many years ago I was a worker that demolished many different project housing (Hyatt Court, Baxter Ter) to name a few. I can explain what is going on in these phases in more detail. In a nutshell, the new housing is up before and existing building is vacated and boarded up due to the fact that to renovate and bring these buildings up to code, would be more expense than to just build new ones. After the new housing is built, the housing authority doesn't really want to spend money on demolishing the old buildings unless there is a good enough reason hence many abandoned structures and keeping the funding allocated towards the future..... Many close calls when I would have to break open all the blocked up windows in the beginning phases of demolition. Be careful out their man.

I lived in the Dayton Street projects and it was GREAT! Twin City was just across the way. We had a giant field that was surrounded by the projects where we'd play softball and other gamez. We had a community center where you could play inside game and other activities. Then we had a very clean Weequaic Park, where all the families went to barbeque. The park still had the horse race tracks and the stadium steps that seem to go ip to the sky! There were no gangs but there was drugs. Most of went to work in the Burry Biscuit building or the factories along Frelinghysen Ave. Yes, those were the good old days; I wish I had of taken more time to enjoy it!

My family lived in Center Terrace until I was 13. Things I remember: Playing in the showers every summer. Walking to Dayton Street School, Twin City Roller rink. Buying cigarettes for my Dad for a quarter at Marty's on the corner of Evergreen and Ross when I was 10. Frelinghuysen Ave flooding, and VW bugs floating up on the sidewalk when a city bus went by. Being at City Hall on a chilly October day in 1962 to see JFK. Being directly under the flight path for Newark airport. Taking the bus to get downtown to Kleins, John's Bargain Store, Woolworth's, McCrory's, and Kresge's. We left Newark a year ahead of the riots in '67 that sealed the projects fate.

In a few years you’ll see this phenomenon but in a bigger scale here in LA. My friends in Echo Park just found out a 150 unit building for a project like this is slated to break ground in a year or so right in front of Echo Park. But more entirely low income projects are being planned all around the City to keep up with the large influx of homeless people with drug issues who can’t hold a job.

These low rise apt were once healthy communities, the high rises weren't maintained, Newark should be taught as a case study in racism in government and people. I was told after we moved from Riverdale the Bronx to West Orange NJ there are places middle class white Jewish people just don't go in Essex Co. Funny our Temple was in East Orange, and even after it moved I shopped and had friends there. I shopped in Newark, and my father had a Mortgage Co there, When few banks would lend money to home owners!! My father saw people who given a chance will tike pride in there home and pay there bills!!! In 40 years in Essex Co, mostly Newark and Irvington only foreclosed once and even in that case the owner had died and there were no heirs!!! My father was poor from the South Bronx, I maybe his only failure in the money thing!!

Born and raised in Newark and lived in two of the housing "projects" there. The Bishop Walsh (which have been torn down) and the Ivy Hill apartments (which should be torn down). Anyway was a firefighter for the city for 31 years. Old abandoned wood frame houses would have the windows boarded up with plywood and 2x4's with long bolts and secured on the inside the same way. See that that didn't work either so the city went to cinder block and mortar to keep the drug users out. A sledge hammer and the cinder block breaks just fine. Don't miss it. The city that is. But have had some good memories of the late fifties and up to the riots. Since then "Brick City" is just a tired old and dead ONCE great city. Kept alive by corrupt politicians and those too poor to leave.

Hi I have the full history of all Newark projects. Sad many good and bad memories. When time were good community was unity and we all loved and respect our neighbors. Yessss my wealth was the beautiful memories of families who wanted good for their children. When drugs were deliberately planned in this city it destroyed generations of families. Yessss everyone one is focused on buying property for profit while the homeless walk the streets mentally ill from the use of drugs. I know who brought the heroin in the city 1967 while the police looked the other way when Italians mafiosa. Handed out drugs to many beautiful blk men who became sick from this hatred and evil introduction to my people. No one talks about this it need to be taught in urban communities so this will neeeeeever be repeated. The children at some point need to know what happened to their uncles, aunts, parents and grandparents. The truth shall be televised whats in the dark God will bring to the light.
