Today we head to the central Tunisian coastline and explore the holiday destination of Monastir, which is the birthplace of Tunisian independence leader Habib Bourguiba. Our tour takes place on the day before Martyrs' Day, so the center of town is beautifully decorated, in preparation for the public ceremonies. Monastir is a very popular beach resort destination located 20km south of Sousse and 160km south of Tunis, however, it has much more to offer visitors than sun, sea and sand! We head to the marina, the 8th century Abbasid Ribat, the 9th century Great Mosque, the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba and the Medina (complete with mosques, museums and Dar Benti!)

Just saw this video! Thanks for taking me back there, it's definitely interesting when you see my city through someone else's lens. Bourguiba is one of the greatest presidents of all time. Way ahead of his time and super charismatic:) Great work!

Other tourists! It's looking very quiet otherwise. For the Bourguiba Mausoleum, it was even pretty quiet when I went a few years ago - I found the chandelier above the coffin hilarious with the energy saving bulbs in it. They didn't have the flags up like that either, so I'd guess it's a Martyrs Day thing. Just looked up Dar Benti, that does look bloody good. Great vid again - I can't wait to get back there.

In tourist-heavy locations along Tunisia's long Mediterranean coastline (such as Monastir, shown in this video) you should be fine with English and maybe a little sign language! But having a few words or phrases in French or Arabic would certainly help you to communicate more effectively.

Monastir used to be called Ruspina, it's the place where occured the battle of Ruspina, between Julius Caesar and the Republican army commanded by Titus Labienus.

Monastir is a college town ! The only pharmacy & dentistry 🦷 schools in the country exist there ! Of course there are other universities too Besides it’s for retired people it’s very quiet city ! I like it from urban planning but it was stuck in 90’s !

Interesting stuff, not so many videos about Monastir. I like it more than Sousse because it is more authentic and cleaner. By the way, why didn't go to Bardo Museum or the Medina in Tunis, I know it is a very well known destination but they are both full of history.

Habib Bourguiba - the most fascinating leader few people outside Tunisia have ever heard of. Completely secular and a champion of women's rights, he is the only modern Arab leader to have faced down the ultra-religious. Most Arab leaders secretly keep these people happy because they're terrified of them, but not Bourguiba. He was very charismatic and knew how to always get the upper-hand in negotiations, as a young Ghaddafi of Libya discovered! He was overthrown by the greedy, corrupt Ben Ali in the mid 80s and spent most of the rest of his life under house arrest. Ben Ali then set about reversing many of his progressive policies and became a carbon copy of his Egyptian neighbour, Mubarak. Bourguiba was a dictator, but unlike most Arab dictators he actually cared about his people.
@ScafidiTravels
@ScafidiTravels 3 года назад
The secular nature of Bourguiba's post-colonial state was certainly an interesting contrast to some other parts of the MENA region at the time. Bourguiba also seems to be fondly remembered in the national consciousness (especially in his hometown of Monastir!)

Ilyes is correct. It literally translates as "house" but can signify anything from guest house to bed and breakfast or even boutique hotel. I have a whole playlist on my channel dedicated to Tunisia's hotels and Dars. Take a look at the amazing variety: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uw_YGs97im8.html

@@ScafidiTravels can i ask about transportation in Tunisia and to and from the capital to souse and this place please?
@ScafidiTravels
@ScafidiTravels Год назад
@@mohammedherzallah1829 Pretty easy to get a louage (public taxi minibus) from the capital if you are happy to do that. If coming in from abroad you could also just fly directly into Monastir airport. Once you're there yellow taxis can be flagged down. They're very cheap by European standards. Alternatively, you can take the train from Tunis to Monastir.
