This is one my favorite movies of all time, and once again cemented Sam Rockwell as my favorite actor. There was a little grass roots campaign to get Rockwell nominated for an Oscar for this movie, because he went completely ignored even though he basically carried an entire movie himself.
Right? I think it takes a truly bright mind to derive so much enjoyment out of other people's genuine efforts, even if most of said efforts are questionable at best as far as the mainstream is concerned. TL;DR - It's easy to be a hater.
I loved the Sam cameo in Jones's later film, "Mute", showing him testifying at a Congressional hearing on TV. Great Easter egg. This movie doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it one of the best movies ever, but man Moon was fucking awesome. A Sci-Fi flick thoroughly deserving of its reputation.
This is such an underrated classic. It's one of my all time favourite films and Rockwell is incredible in the role. It's such a shame that this just didn't seem to get the recognition it so greatly deserves.
Excellent video. Moon is a great, hidden gem of a movie and Sam Rockwell is just a criminally underrated actor. Thanks for such a thorough exploration.
High, high praise for this flick. Couldn't agree more with your commentary.

saw that you made a video about this movie. went to see the movie. got my mind blown. came back to watch the video. now I like the movie even more! just, thank you!!
Good Bad Flicks can go multiple ways, could be covering good and bad flicks, or good flicks that are bad, or bad flicks that are good, makes sense still.
I still remember coming across that iconic poster for the first time and thinking, “I love Rockwell! Why haven’t I heard of this?” I watched it, riveted... sat in silence for several minutes, then watched it again immediately. One of my favorite movies of all time.
It's really unfortunate that relatively few people have seen this. I worry that it's going to become another "Dark City," a minor masterpiece that slips through the cracks and only lives on as a cult film instead of finding its rightful place among the classics. Moon really does deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the films that inspired it.
Well just as with 2001 people didn't really realize the potential of the movie and how far it spoke at the time, I can't say that Moon will reach as far in depth, but I think people will soon realize how much the film actually speaks about the future with in itself.
" I worry that it's going to become another "Dark City," a minor masterpiece that slips through the cracks and only lives on as a cult film instead of finding its rightful place among the classics. " I would think that sometimes obtaining cult status would be more desirable than main stream success...it depends on the material, I suppose...but cult fans generally speaking have a deeper love and appreciation for what the vast majority don't appreciate... And as a filmmaker, I would likely be more attracted to creating for that audience than the masses...
One of the most heart wrenching films I have ever seen. When I saw you were going to do it in my subs feed I had to hesitate as to whether I was going to watch the video or not. This film really, really got to me. A near perfect film and Rockwell should have gotten major praise for this.
Moon...I never regretted watching this movie. Are there really people who dislike this film? I suppose so. Glad to see it has fans. Hopefully he checks out CQ(if he hasn't already).
I watched this one day, on demand, totally by chance when I was bored and it blew me away. it became an instant favourite and it was the first movie I had ever seen Sam Rockwell in, and he kicked so much ass! Also, fun fact: I had no idea it was Kevin Spacey as the computer!
Mad respect for the production crew for their amazing balancing act between practical effects, CGI, and well-directed acting. I'm especially surprised by how the distant sections of the clone chamber was made. I used to think it was CG.
I'm remember watching this on TV and i was just blown away by it. Its fantastically made and it wasnt til a few years ago that I found out Bowie was his dad
Just finished watching this movie just now after watching this review. An excellent movie. One of those movies that come around ever so often and is a much watch.
I couldn't agree more with this video. I've been telling people about this movie for years. When Oblivion came out, people asked me my thoughts on it, and I would immediately refer Moon.
_Moon_ was an amazing indie sci-fi movie, I *_love_* the moments that feature outside the base, and you see nothing but Moon landscape and star-field. I also love the use of Smiley Faces for Gerty, so cute. And the interactions between the two Sams was so seamless and spot-on, it was like as if there actually were two Sams. This movie definitely felt like something from the 70s/80s. I can't wait for the "quasi-sequel" _Mute_, which is said to be Jones' long-planned love letter to _Blade_ _Runner_.
I just saw this film and was incredibly impressed with Rockwell's performance. People talk about Hanks carrying Cast Away on his own but this was just as impressive if not more. For a little while I wasn't exactly certain if Sam was loosing his mind and suffering delusions of himself. This was a great story and outstanding bit of acting.
saw this movie a while back , and I remember being blown away by it ... left me with a dread that's hard to explain ... also made me a sam Rockwell fan for life ...
Moon should've never been talked in a show called Good BAD Movies. It's one of the best, most clever, best looking, most exciting sci-fi movies... well, ever.
Good Bad Flicks isn't about "Bad" moves its about "Good and Bad" movies. Its about how much effort goes into films that may or may not work. Its about fantastic movies that don't get the recognition they deserve. Its about how much studio involvement can screw up a production. Its about the passion and drive of some to have their story told. Its about the love of cinema. Its about enjoying all kinds of films and bringing attention to said productions. In the case of Moon, this is one of the best films ever made and so many people still haven't seen it.
OR! You started out purely intending to talk about good bad movies, and along the way thought of good good movies you wanted to talk about too, which would also be a perfectly legit answer :D No harm in going a bit beyond the concept you originally envisioned, it's all for the love of movies
I’ve always assumed that the title “Good Bad Flicks” was about good movies that are considered bad by critics or general audiences and/or that didn’t do very well at the box office (thus, seen as bad movies by the studios). It’s quite refreshing to see a place dedicated in a non-ironic way to lesser known movies. Your channel has brought me to a lot of movies that I’ve enjoyed that I’ve never heard of before. I love your videos and the amount of research that goes into them and most of all, I love your passion for the movies you talk about regardless if they are popular or not. Thank you for the great work :)
It seems to me that the when the title of the video has "Exploring" in it, he is usually looking at a good movie (or one he finds good himself) and the ones with "Good Bad Flicks" actually in the title are the ones he'll make fun throughout the summary and then give some facts on why that particular movie went bad. Same channel, two different "shows".
discovered your channel via the blair witch exploring vid which i thought was excellent but this is definitely a new favourite. absolutely adore this movie and haven't seen it for too long, thanks for the timely reminder to watch again.
I've watched the movie long time ago, by coincidence and I felt in love with it. To the point that I had my girlfriend watch it, even though she didn't think she was going to like it, and she was literally speechless while watching the movie.
i remember searching for good sci fi movies on a really boring day when i discovered this movie years ago and its fantastic. Sam Rockwell's performance is amazing. I also enjoyed Source Code alot. Have you seen it Cecil?
Love this movie...sadly I didn't hear of it until last year (someone else on RU-vid had mentioned a little about it)...but now that I've seen it i try to encourage others to check it out as well...thank you for covering this!
Great movie, great video! Thanks for making this "Exploring..." episode, Moon is one of my favorite scifi movies and Sam Rockwell is a talent of his own.
I interned for NASA several times. I've kept in touch with my mentors, coworkers and fellow interns. I've noticed a consensus among them all -- that this is one of their favorite sci-fi films. This is what Star Trek could have been (in terms of the healthy marriage of science and fiction).
This is one of my favorite underrated films, I'm so happy you reviewed it! I'm not sure if you still take requests, but Clue the Movie is another instant classic you should make a video on.
"Moon" is the kind of film I am drawn to deeply ... no action sequences, not a lot of noise and CGI, no cheap and manipulative script writing. Just an interesting story that pulls you in and makes you think. Sometimes the best science fiction cinema experiences are slow, contemplative, and they remain with you. Mind you, I enjoy some rollicking fun and escapism now and then ("The Fifth Element", "Star Wars: A New Hope"); but if you want something more substantial then this movie is just the ticket.
I saw this movie shortly after it was released. Being a fan of science fiction, I agree with you completely. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The sci-fi element is spot on and Sam Rockwell's performance is outstanding.
I actually had to go on a hunt for this blu-ray back before I started really shopping on Amazon, I also bought it when I wanted to add a bunch of films Sam Rockwell was in into my library. It is one of the best space films I have every watched. It also was my opening film to Duncan Jones and lead me to Source Code which was another good film.
I agree ! I found it a little slow at first, and confusing. Then the story came together and I was intrigued by what was really going on. The escape to earth was crazy, but seemed like the kind of thing that the character would try to pull off. I found myself getting to care about the character and whether or not that the computer would help him or betray him. Especially since the computer had hidden knowledge (like HAL). The special effects shots were excellent ! Well done !
Duncan Jones had to show up at a one of screening of this to promote it in Ireland back when it was released thats how low key he was as a film maker , not knowing who he was was it was a real treat to meet the brains of a film i had just seen and was amazed . like when does THAT ever happen :)
Thanks to your little warning at the beginning, I decided to give this movie a go. It was amazing. So thanks. You got one of the best channels I've seen on youtube. Keep up the good work! Next on my list of movies to watch, is snowpiercer. Another recommendation from you.
Dude...I love your videos. This is one of my top movies of all time and now I love it even more with the info you provided. Keep it up. It's very much appreciated.
It's downright shameless how mainstream film critics have come out in force against Duncan Jones for the Warcraft film. The simple fact is that if Warcraft had "Star Wars" in the title, it would have earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%+. Look at some Star Wars film ratings for comparison: The Phantom Menace 55%, Attack of the Clones 65% (I know, right?), Revenge of the Sith 79%, and the unoriginal, derivative, soft reboot, The Force Awakens, earned a whopping 92%. Duncan Jones is a clear talent in the industry and I take issue with everyone trying so desperately to scuttle his career.
It shows a massive divide between the audience and the critics. Look at his twitter feed, the WoW message boards or even the audience score. Tons of people are loving this film and yet the critics (for the most part) seem to be dumping all over it because it has the audacity to be an adaptation of a dreaded video game.
Or because they made a film that was geared too heavily towards fans of the games, leaving those that don't already know the lore scratching their heads as to what is going on. It's not always a conspiracy.
I agree about the disconnect. This was probably one of the best videogame movies out there, and it definitely wasn't aimed at fans. I think Blizzard figured Warcraft fans would go to the movie anyway, so they targeted audience members that had never played the games, so they ended up hashing out backstory the fans already knew and didn't want to hear. They definitely went out of their way to not alienate the audience because they weren't familiar with the franchise. The fans are leveling more criticism than average Joe for this reason and because only half of the movie was for the fans and new.
I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of the Warcraft film(not a fan of the series). The film was alright. But I do love Duncan Jones as a director. This movie in particularly, showed me this guy has immense talent. I want Warcraft to succeed box office wise because Duncan Jones is one of those individuals who is ripe to make a huge impact in Hollywood. I'm picturing him doing a Thundercats movie. I can already picture how amazing that will be.
What did you guys like so much about the film ? I thought it was very flawed, I thought the only thing that worked was Durotan's storyline and even then it was a very simple story and arc for the character.
I love this movie. One of the best sci-fi films ever made, and probably Rockwell's best films. I usually bring this movie up when talking about films with others, especially if they mention Oblivion, the Tom Cruise film which is similar to this.
The info that you provide is really exciting , thank you. Please continue the stuff that you are doing because as for me it's very difficult to find and order all the additional information about the film and it's cast. And also I often forget to pay attention for the great number of films.
You mention how the original Sam must have been a complete jerk, going along with the company's plan to clone him. I'm not sure if that was the actual case, I suspect that they employed the original Sam for a 3 year stint, allowing them to record all of the messages from his wife back on Earth; at the end of his tour, they simply knock him out during the return trip, take the samples for the clones and record his memories up to the point where he originally woke up on the station fully trained to carry out his tasks (which might have actually been several months into his tour). At the end of the day, even if the clone doesn't last the full three years, they just unwrap the next one and reset the clocks and calendars to that point where he wakes up.
I saw the trailer when it first came out and it's always been a "Will I or won't I" kind of movie. I think It'll definitely be watching it now. Great review as always.
I saw this in theaters and really liked it a lot. unfortunately I was probably one of three people in the theater at the time. also check out the "mildew of the planet xoneder" when you get a chance. the preview has a tag line that says the 80s are back. but I will warn you it is so gory that some people I know I couldn't even finish it. I think it was hilarious.
