Moosehead lake is, by far, the largest lake entirely within the boundaries of New England. With a sense of adventure, I set out onto its waters for a five day kayaking trek. Along the way, I encounter many obstacles and if I can overcome the all, Moosehead may just grant me the singular experience I am looking for.

In an open canoe I have paddled the entire length of Moosehead. From Lilly Bay north to the northeast carry, then down the Penobscot in to Chesuncook Lake. Out to the Rip dam. Just a truly monstrous water system. Mid day when the wind picks up, forget it. Awesome area !

I've camped on sunset cove before, and it's name is defiantly accurate. The night I was there it was like the hevans were opening up on the horizon. Caught a pretty nice bass around the corner from the campsite.

Patrick Hicks, Glad to see you make the decision to turn around. Especially solo without the assistance of another kayaker in case of capsizing. I have the same kayak and it’s been well offshore in the ocean, several river trips including the Allagash and many lakes. I live on Moosehead now and it’s a wonderful body of water. Additional gear you may consider is a paddle float and self bailer pump. That kayak will handle very rough water but bracing techniques and self rescue knowledge a must. Great video with the right message. See ya on the water sometime!

@@ZakkThomas Perception 17’. Jeesh, bought it probably 15 years ago. I had been kayaking in another Perception for years and had smaller kayaks for my 3 boys for flyfishing and small rivers. The 17’ Perception came with a free lesson so I took offshore paddling as a class. Great kayak, still use it today!

Love the video. Question for you, how did you get back to your starting launch point when ending in Rockwood? Is there a shuttle service? I had some similar kayak camping spots I was hoping to explore this year, but unsure where to launch and land from. Never been to this lake before.

Great question. I hitched back to my Jeep. If the weather was better, I would have continued to Seboomook instead. I'm not exactly sure how I would have gotten back to me jeep at that point.

Drone. Sometimes I also set up a camera on a rock , floating dock I paddle by or some such thing. Great question.

Had it behind me in reach. I didn't wear one when not legally required as I don't do white water. Now I have an auto inflate pfd that I wear when I'm in my kayak and the waves get big. Great point and comment.
