In today's video, the 5th and final of our Mississippi River Roadtrip series, Andrew, Robi, and James are headed to Natchez Mississippi, the oldest town on the Mississippi. WATCH THE SERIES - • Day Trips from New Orl... .
Unlike in our other videos in this series, the boys are actually going to visit this town as tourists. They have never been here before and will experience it for you as newbies themselves.
We first visit The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians and their burial mounds and community before stopping by the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Next, the boys stumble upon Forks of the Road Historical Site, one of the busiest slave ports in the area. Then, they visit a historic cemetery before heading into downtown Natchez and to Fort Rosalie.

I recently took a road trip from San Antonio, Texas up to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to visit family. After watching this video, I made a point to stop in Natchez on the way. I loved it so much I stayed the night there and stopped there again on the way back to Texas. It’s an amazing town, and I loved learning about it and it’s history from this video! You guys are awesome, please keep the videos coming!

My family is from Natchez & moved to Chicago before I was born. I always loved going down to Natchez & recently I’ve been finding out all of this incredible history of the town. Natchez has such a deep & rich history by native Americans, African slaves and the French. My whole life I thought it was just a small town but Natchez was very important once upon a time.

I truly appreciate y'all not sugar coating the fact that it was pretty much chaos and pretty much everyone was taking everyone else as slaves, and that people did fight to be free and to free others. That's just how it was. History is messy and complicated because people are messy and complicated, but we shouldn't hide from it. We should accept that there are no saints here, just people. I wouldn't say "get over it" because that would mean forgetting the price our ancestors paid for us to be where we are, and thus forgetting our duty to those who will come after us. We owe it to our ancestors to honor them and remember them and to live our lives in such a way that they would be proud of us. Maybe that's a southern mindset or maybe a tribal mindset, I don't know, but that's the way I feel about it.

Great road trip that my wife and I did many years ago. We stayed at Landsdowne in Natchez. Had hoped you'd cover some of the "City Plantation Homes" in Natchez. IIRC, the owners had their working plantation across the river and Landsdowne was their city home. I also remember that the home was the most complete with original furnishings in Natchez. The silver was stashed in the backyard cistern so the Northern troops wouldn't find and confiscate it. The couple there were real jewels. Will always love Natchez due to their hospitality

If no one has mentioned it, my FAVE fiction author lives in Natchez!! Greg Iles!! His Pen Cage series are my favorite books! Would’ve loved to see his office/AirBnB on this tour! It’s a chalet style house on the river downtown (I’ve never been to Natchez, just love Greg Iles). I knew of Turning Angel, Ft. Rosalie, and Under the Hill from his books set there. "Each plantation had a theme." Let that sink in. Great information, thanks so much. Also, usually only slaves and the poor went to hospitals. As the wealthy and powerful, were cared for "at home".

I grew up in Ferriday Louisiana across the river. Y’all should have gone over to Vidalia across the bridge and gone to Jo Jo’s where you can drive through a bar and buy liquor and a large array of mixed drinks. It is a hoot, only in Louisiana!

Up on the other end of the Natchez Trace Trail in TN, there is a town called Hohenwald that has one the largest elephant sanctuaries in the country. It used to be open to the public but isnt anymore - but they might let you in for a short documentary. Researching how animals were treated in hundreds of old circuses and where they ended up or how they were put down is a fascinating, but horrible, area of study. There is a town in TN called Erwin on I-26 above Asheville that used to advertise they were the home of The Hanging Elephant as they shot and hung an elephant because it ran across a field, starving, and killed a man trying to get watermelons. Actually it was the fill-in trainer who stabbed the elephant with a spike and Mary, the elephant in a circus for 26 yrs, stomped him. They hurried her to the train and she got away from Kingsport to Erwin, but the sheriff in Erwin was ordered to kill her, and what ensued from that point was horrible. No one has researched this story like I have and in 25 years, not even locals in Erwin know the real truth. Ive done years of research on what happened to several elephants who got lose and accidentally killed someone. Thomas Edison was once called in to electrocute one. I guess I only bring this up because it is what is on the OTHER END of the Natchez trail, the elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald. They are constantly seeking donations to raise funds to feed the elephants who were horribly abused in circuses long ago. Plus, I ride motorcycles and it is a very cool area to ride in. Im in East Tn but Im looking to move to the Natchez area soon. There is alot more the The Natchez Trace Trail, the Trail of 1000 tears, than meets the eye.

I did indeed love this for heart road trip. Here in Waco Texas we have a suspension bridge across the Brazos River that people also put padlocks on which is not good for the bridge and I know that here in Waco city services go out once you're cut them all off.

I was born in Natchez in 1948 but live there very long, my daddy was a rambler, lol. I was raised in Texas and live in Alabama now. I'm 75 & so interested in finding out about where I was born. I was born in the hospital because I was very premature. My mother didn't always go to hospitals due to money, no insurance of course. Kind of an interesting birth because my mother didn't know she was carrying twins & her first idea was when she went into labor it was way to early but she did deliver a baby which was tiny & if they knew the sex they didn't tell her. The doctor, don't have a name yet wanted to do a D & C but she told him no she still had a baby in her womb but he told her it wasn't possible to lose a baby & continue to carry another. There were no modern ways of knowing anything like that. She went home refused the procedure. A month later she went back & sure enough she had me. I was a blue baby, too early to live. No NICU's for me. According to mother's version the doctor just told the nurse I wasn't going to make it, my lungs weren't developed enough. Well the nurse kept rubbing me doing anything to get me to live & finally she heard the weakest litttle sound & told the doctor I was going to make it, God had his hand on me. I'm 75 now, have continued all my life to have problems breathing. I have asthma & prone to pneumonia but she was right, God has always had his hand on me. My mom died in 1962 so I have no one to ask questions about my birth. So as soon as we can me & my husband are going to do a little trip to Natchez just to see if I can find out about the city of my birth. Any info would help me to get answers once we get there. Thanks y'all.

@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Thanks. Hey, I got my birth certificate out & got a good bit of information from it. The Hospital was called Natchez General & it was on Oak St. We lived on 307 Wall St. My dad's name was Bruce Davis & mother was Mildred Davis, she didn't work. Dad worked for McHenry Casing Co. drilling for oil. It shows me being premature at 8 months which I knew about that but it doesn't have the doctors name on it & thats strange. So, thanks to you guys & now my birth certificate I'm ready to make my trip to Natchez. Oh, the doctor did sign it but you can't read it, lol. I want to go to that big old cemetery in Natchez & the Natchez under the bluff. I hope I might get to meet you guys, that would be fun.
