I lived on the upper East side as a student for several years. I could never have afforded it unless I had been in a dorm where the costs were largely supported by my school. I’m not gonna lie, it’s an amazing place. Super clean, super friendly, amazing restaurants. I was lucky to have had the experience.

@@ito10104 Amen. I agree. It's hard, but there will be some that love God more than their money, and they will make it, there will be many poor who's hearts are not right with God as well. It's a matter of the heart; a heart transformed by the BLOOD of Jesus. People judge the outside too often, but God judges the heart, because what's in the heart will eventually hit the surface anyway. I've never known wealth, so that won't be an issue for me, but the condition of my heart still matters whether I have wealth--or not.

UES resident here. Just to clarify a few things. UES wealth is indeed behind gates and security. The doormen in luxury buildings serve as the de facto security for many of these buildings. Also, when he pointed out that there were no bars on the windows, that lacked context. Residents on Park and Madison Ave, for example, do not have street level apartments. That space is often occupied by a doctors offices or simply by the lobby of the building. Ground floor apartments in Upper East Side walk-ups indeed do very often have bars on the windows.

Carnegie was a cut-throat businessman, who let his underlings do all his dirty work. He had a conversion experience when he approached retirement age. Something about the camel and the eye-of -the-needle... He decided to give away his wealth, and hundreds of free public libraries were part of the result.

I went to a performing arts high school on the UES by 68th and lex, commuted from Queens everyday. It was my favorite place to just escape. Smoked joints on the steps of some millionaire’s brownstone, then went out to eat at some fancy restaurant before returning to perform or something. Even shared and sold a joint to an actually millionaire during our class break😂... Surprisingly some of the most regular seeming, humble, chill residents live here despite their “class difference”. They’d always say hi and were welcoming when us student would sit and smoke or take pics on their brownstones/property. I remember a time I left my phone in Central Park on a lunch break, and when I got out of school me and my friend tracked it down to Drew Barrymore. THE Drew Barrymore had my phone, she was sitting outside her child’s daycare with it in hand. Me and like 5 friends even got a group pic with her to remember the day, and that was just normal. Lowkey feels like a fever dream. 2019. Little did I know, my day to day that I took for granted was some people’s dream to experience. I always get nostalgic when I’m in the area post covid lol. Sm good memories here.

I’ve been watching all of your RU-vid’s and I’m happy to see you balance out the extreme poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, desperation, hopelessness with the other side of life here in this video. While I would never fault the disenfranchised I do believe that the example of say Carnegie is a good one when it comes to people who work really hard to make a difference, in a positive constructive way. I understand that many people are stuck where they are but true freedom allows us to understand the world in a way that we can freely move about it. And that does not always have to do with money. Thanks for your broad view on life.

She then gave it it's own address identical to her other on 5th- 666 Park Avenue. She never occupied it, and it fell into the hands of my step great grandfather. One thing I have always loved about the UES is the maisonettes and stunning townhomes. They were quite massive. My family has been in New York since the 1800s- One of whom resided at 53 E 77Th. I grew up there. It was a very safe and great place to grow up. Spanish Harlem butts up to Carnegie Hill, so I was right on the 'border'' LOL! It does not have the same feel now but it will come back. The city was bankrupt and in bad shape in the 70's and it came back beautifully. But growing up, we went into many of those fine shops, to the museums, enjoyed Central Park, walked among the super wealthy, saw celebrities all the time. I long to take my kids one day.

Well said [8:14]. I live overseas and despite the fact that I like mixing and socializing with people from different cultures, Americans are the easiest to get along with, travel with, and just simply chat with especially strangers than people from other cultures. Rich people in many countries live behind high walls and securities, while in America they like to show their wealth and achievements. Very true. Great videos. Thank u

Wealth might not be hidden and protected behind giant walls and security guards in NYC, but this is the case in many parts of America. For example, in Beverley Hills in California and some wealthy suburban areas of LA where all the movie stars, tonight show hosts and producers are living, you literally can't walk into some of the neighborhoods. There are barriers at the entrance of these neighborhoods and they don't allow people in unless you are residing in the area or you are an invited visitor.

It’s been years since I’ve walked the streets of NYC. The last time I was in there I wasn’t even able to spend any time in Manhattan and only saw it as I drove through on my way to Upstate NY on business. I wanted so much to just pull over and park just so I could walk about and commune with one of my favorite places in the world. Thanks for a great tour. Loved it.

I grew up on Park Ave in Carnegie Hill and am living in Carnegie Hill again now. I went to Hunter HS, the Armory Castle school in your vid or the “Brick Prison” as we called it bc of its windows only wide enough to shoot an arrow out of. Horrible idea to make the school look like the armory depriving all the kids of sunlight. Had no idea Bourdain lived in Carnegie Tower, the building we all hated bc it blocked out the afternoon sun in our school courtyard. I agree it’s the nicest place on the UES, since it is beautiful and by far most neighborhoody with tons of schools and local shops as well as humanscale buildings. But it isn’t the most expensive. It was derided in the old days as the Irish Gold Coast and then Jewish Gold Coast in the days when the more prestigious buildings south of Carnegie Hill didn’t allow Irish or Jews. Anyway, great job on this video! Loved your ones on Hasidim; I learned so much. Cheers.

The great irony is that *East Harlem is directly above the Upper East Side and it is one of the lowest-income/lowest-cost regions of Manhattan.* Rent in the heart of East Harlem around 116th St is literally 20-25% of the rent in the heart of the Upper East Side just 30-blocks (1.5 miles/2km) below it on 86st. East Harlem is a gem of value for those comfortable living there. UES supermarkets typically charge 50% more for most foods than those in East Harlem.

What I loved about New York coming from Wiltshire in england was when I was having a converation with my American friend walking the streets, was that people would join in with you and have something to add; People more often than not had something to add and their own recounts of the context of which we were speaking. I loved New york and have been desperately wanting to go to the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and the feast of San Gennaro for which I have been planning to do for the last 2 years since my last visit. I hope the peoples of New York get through this and regain life as it was before. God Bless america
