Fenrir wasn't a threat to Odin until he was betrayed and chained out of fear. Besides his rapid growth, Fenrir showed no form of hostility towards anyone around him. It wasn't the beast that was the threat. It was the prophecy that created fear that was the threat.

He wasn't. He wanted to fit in with the Asir, as he lived in Asgard and considered it his home, and the Asir was like his family, the only people he'd ever known.

It is interesting how cause and effect is explored through Loki's children. If the Gods had merely continued to raise Fenrir would he have turned hostile at all? Likewise with the Jörmungandr? Was Ragnarök ultimately a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I think Loki's children gives a lesson of giving a benefit of a doubt and not to judge an individual based on their lineage/ancestor's past. While Fenrir was becoming more wild, I think giving him a collar and allowing him to roam where the chain ended would have been more fair and giving him some sort of authority of said land he reaches. The World Serpent should have had authority of the oceans as a peace treaty. The only one of Loki's children that seemed to receieved the better end of the stick was Hel, since she became Empress of the Underworld.

I think the point of Fenrir is that, while mean and somewhat abrasive, he was at his core good, or at least loyal to the Aesir, and the binding incident is what made him the god's enemy. had Odin not been paranoid his death would possibly be avoided.

@igormarcos687
@igormarcos687 6 лет назад
The part that Fenrir bits off Tyr's arm is a bit off, the deal between Fenrir and Tyr was that Fenrir would try to break free from the rope/chain, but if he could not break free the gods would set him free by taking off the rope/chain, but when the gods saw that Fenrir could ot break it and excape, they let him there to be tied forever (as they thought), so Tyr knew what Fenrir had to do, and Fenrir then, after the Gods did not set him free as their part of the deal, Fenrir bit off Tyr's arm as a compensation, and this was one of Odins' mistake, he made Fenrir their enemies, because of fear he helped the Ragnarok to exist.

Being a devotee to Hela (which is Hel’s Teutonic spelling), I will share some more things about her. She is known to be cruel and greedy, this is only half true about her. Being both living and dead, she is two extremes within one mass. She is by far the most devoted to humans, and is the only goddess who can withstand seeing someone at their lowest point and not flinch. She is compassionate, but she never will sugar coat anyrhing or beat around the bush. Also, despite her being cruel by mocking you or insulting you when you are down, she is really helping you get back up on your own. Lastly, about her apperance and its symbolic meaning. Ultimately, Hela is a mirror; what you project she throws back at you; at first the two sides are balanced. When you interact with her, one side becomes more prevalent than the other.
@YoshiLupus
@YoshiLupus 6 лет назад
Brenden Rolls Is the mirror thing from a particular source? I play a game, SMITE, in which you can play as Hel, and her win screen has the two sides of her reflected in a mirror, one above the other. It's really cool to see that it wasn't some random thing added by the devs.

According from a shaman's interaction with her in meditation, he stated when he saw her, she re tflected to him every dark regret along with every little part of him that crippled his self-esteem. He stated to the effect of," She was challenging me to see if I could handled my worst and accept myself, both the good and bad..." Again, she is cruel by putting someone through all the trauma they endured, but she does that to have one get over the incident completely and not regret it. The mirroring reference may hint at that yes, but the most accurate about her character is her darker aspect. The light aspect, is more of a stereotype if that makes sense. All the insults and condescending remarks she makes to her light aspect and others are accurate somewhat on how she interacts with others. If that answered your question.

Kind of seems that way a bit, after all Loki's horse child didn't seem to cause any trouble, in addition you have to wonder if those prophecies were self fulfilling, after all in one story all Fenrir wanted was the respect of the gods, but they never respected him they only feared him, and when he is freed he destroys everything as revenge for being bound.
@wanderingbufoon
@wanderingbufoon 6 лет назад
well the father was not also a credible person... I mean he did kill an immortal god, he did cause Baldr to be stuck in Hel, which he killed in the first place. So.... Whether Loki was mischievous from the start or whether it is again a self fulfilling prophecy is another thing. I do believe it is the latter. He was brought up as a prized child although in most of the stories, Odin held him in high regard.
@Katzztar
@Katzztar 6 лет назад
Actually its in the Icelandic version of myths that have Loki be responsible for Baldur's death. In the Danish version of Baldur's death does not have Loki be responsible for that event.
@Sidragrosm
@Sidragrosm 6 лет назад
Yet another reason he (Odin) is also known as Odin Oath-breaker. All Loki and his children truly wanted was respect (something they were NEVER given, in any form!) - and they got shit upon for it. There's only so much of THAT one can take, after all..(~cue Ragnarock~) Nice going Odin! Real nice!
@TheGrinningViking
@TheGrinningViking 6 лет назад
Ragnarok was certain because Odin knew the runes and had the ability/willingness to break oaths, something Loki did not; and old one eye held the security of his people in higher regard than his own oath of brotherhood to his jotunn "brother." This led to Odin attempting to kill or imprison two of Loki's children and (potentially) the third as well - given that the text saying he willingly gave Hel her position was in the christian fanfic portion of Snorri's Edda, rather than one of the preserved poems. (It does not make sense that Odin would give Hel any kind of power with a prophecy saying she would lead an army against him in his pocket. Perhaps before this, however.) After this happened Loki found a way to send Odin's most prized child to be with Hel, without breaking his own oath. This was likely unavoidable given his nature, and how badly he had been slighted. Once the beginning was a certainty Ragnarok became certain as well. Fate was kind of different for the Old Norse than for us. It was things that would happen based on what had already been done - with each moment determining things that would happen later instead of what would happen now. Like weaving a tapestry: once started only so much can be changed.

This is why in Buddhism the Devas, or Gods, are said to still be subject to karmic cause and effect. If Fenrir and Jormundgandr weren’t ill-treated, would this happen? If Fenrir didn’t bear grudges, would all of this happen? This is why, personally, whilst I acknowledge the power and wisdom of the Norse deities be it Aesir, Vanir or Rökkr, they, much like the Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Mayan, Chinese, Hindu and even the Abrahamic angels and appropriate divinities are still stuck in this cycle of cause and effect. Only when one transcends ego and seeks out life in the Middle way between worldly pleasures and harsh asceticism, will one truly attain enlightenment.

Odin and Loki were blood brothers but then odin betrayed loki so many times. when odin and tyr caught loki sneaking back to the castle from angrboda's place .odin ordered for the pilgrimage to angrboda's home. They took loki's 3 young children with angrboda to asgard. Jormungand the serpent,Fenrir the wolf and Hel. jormungad was sent to the oceans of midgard,Hel was tasked to rule nilhelm. they raised fenrir out of fear of the prophecy that fenrir will kill odin on the upcoming ragnarok. they deviced a plan to bind him when he grew up . since It was said that fenrir was well spoken he tried to fit in and loki was proud of him. When loki found out about the binding of his son he got angry.After some time there was a prophecy that baldr was going to die so frigg, odin and the other Gods tried to change baldr's fate.Loki was furious because of the other gods' hypocrisy that he helped hodr murder bladr the beloved son of odin. he was angry because the other Gods did not try to change the fate of his children and was eager to be rid of them. That probably was the start of his vengeance. Loki gave riches like the mjolnir to the norse pantheon through his good natured mischief but he was always blamed by the other Gods. poor loki ☹️

Sometimes attempting to prevent a bad future ends up causing it. If Odin didn't send Hel to the underworld, yeet Jörmungand into the ocean, and trick and bind Fenrir, do you think Ragnarök wouldn't have happened? Or at the very least, not had have their involvement?

I wonder if the prophecy of Ragnorak was a self-fullfilling prophecy. Had the gods treated Loki's children with one ounce of respect I don't think the hatred towards the Asgardian gods would have been there to even start Ragnorak. I think Loki was just seeking revenge in the end after seeing what the gods had done to him and his children really, for such a long time.

Well that isn't confirmed or denied in the Eddas whether it's a cycle, Ragnarokkr may have been a one time event but they hint in Voluspa that Magni and Modi (Thor's sons) survived and are ruling the new world, perhaps repeating the cycle. But yes its more of a rebirth.

Utgar Loki was an illusionist, he disguised wild fire as an average guy, earlier in the story Thor and friends stop by a cottage and have dinner, they slaughter one of Thor's cart pulling goats and eat it, saving the bones so it could be brought back to life, one of the kids breaks one of the bones for the marrow or something, so the family's two sons go with them, the one claimed to be a good runner, he was outrun by though itself disguised as an average guy. Thor drank part of the ocean, lost a wrestling match with old age disguised as an old woman, and failed to lift a cat that kept lengthening, which turned out to be Jormangandr. earlier in the story utgar disguised himself as another giant and put the illusion on mountains, when Thor tried to hit i=him with his hammer, he left large square valleys in the wake of his strikes, drank so hard from the horn that it lowered the world's water levels, actually put up a fight against old age, and endangered the world by getting snake cat over his head.

So I'm in a bit of a debative mood and wanting to just talk about something I've always wondered about since first learning of the Norse Mythos as a kid. Please don't mind me just going off here like Red from OSP (Overly Sarcastic Productions) - whom I do think would be an AMAZING collaboration with The Exploring Series. :D The thing which always bothered me was a lot of the information we are given in the stories of how the Gods treated Loki's children could have prevented the overall events of Ragnarok, or at least offered a different ending. Don't get me wrong, Loki was an *ASS* for killing Balder and not mourning or regretting his actions, that's part of his character, but a lot of Odin's actions in particular around these seem quite petty and desperately thoughtless to me. It's in complete contrast with the character we see in many other stories, especially of how he sacrificed his *eye* for unimaginable amounts of wisdom, and has two Ravens and wolves that literally report to him on *everything happening in the world.* He's the Allfather, and is pretty clever- in some stories he's just as much of, if not even more of a trickster than Loki (he was prayed to by BANDITS and outlaws in favor of the God of mischief!). I could see it holding up to a lot of Nordic customs where Odin could fairly call Loki out for Balder's death, and if there were tales expressing the Trickster's offspring being a handful before everything that ocurred to them, or if they had a hand in Balder's demise, okay. But while they were Fierce, the Nords also believed in a sense of fairness that I feel just doesn't add up with the mythos. Odin cannot see his own actions are what spur his blood-brother's children to choose to fight against him in the end despite how much power and genius he supposedly has, and I feel like there is something about that that's just....off. * Hel is stated as indifferent to most, but gets locked in the underworld. Granted, we don't know why Odin gave her the power to control the Underworld, but did he really have to "throw her out of Asgard" when she never actually did anything to warrant being deemed trouble? If anything, I'd at least call it a promotion and offer a Goddess of such a place an open seat any time she wanted a glass of Mead or tea and some fresh air and try to be on her good side, especially when she even offers to bring back a murdered son if a condition is met without quarrel. * Fenrir was literally raised "amongst the gods" to try and tame him like Sleipnir, and up until that point has no history in the myths of wishing the Allfather ill will, then gets betrayed by the people he showed respect and trust to, and *has a sword driven through his pallet so if he swallowed he would get a sword to the brain after being chained and isolated.* This is an odd and frankly hostile choice of "justice" even for the Aesir in this point of the myths, and I'm *amazed* this has never been used as source material for pet abuse or child abuse awareness infomercials. The gods did what they could to stave off Ragnarock and Odin’s death for he is needed then. But Fenrir committed no crime before or at the time of his binding. Fear of what he COULD do is what caused his binding and subsiquent torture, and the one God who could have literally *"Seen"* a way around it is the one who did that. ---On that note, why would Odin keep Sleipnir if he was so paranoid of Loki's kids?! It just seems to me that the Gods created their own enemies, and a whole ton of bad could have been avoided if they (Odin especially) just stopped and thought for a minute. The prophecy created the situation which created the prophecy when the Oracle told would *could* happen, but not what was definite with the exception of the fact that not all of the pantheon would live to see a new world, because times change.

The child turned into a wolf was almost certainly Odin's son, Vali, changed by the power he granted to the ulfhednar (sometimes called berserkers, though this is historically inaccurate, with ulfhednar meaning "Wolf Cloak" and berserker "Bear Cloak.") There are two reasons for this: First, he had the same name as the Son of Odin as documented multiple places in both Edda, and the same mission of vengeance for Baldr's death. Second, and more interestingly, if the old story was not simply transcribed incorrectly by Snorri this would mean at least one of Odin and Loki's children were blood brothers. In the saga (dealing with historical figures) blood brothers were referred to by the Old Norse as if they were actual brothers sharing all the same parents. (Point of fact: Loki is described as "Son of Bestla" in several old norse texts; while Bestla is certainly Odin's mother in the tale, and Laufrey is Loki's. It was simply a kenning related to them being blood brothers.) This being the case Vali was almost certainly Odin's son and Nari/Narvi's blood brother, the one literally born to avenge baldr, and his being called a child of Loki was simply a kenning relating to their being blood brothers.

He used very good references. If he had said anything that wasn't true, i would've been saying something. Im Asatru/Norse pagan. These are the stories I tell my children. I'm very well versed in Norse mythology. If i may make a video reqest, if you could make a video on the religion itself instead of just the stories. There's so much more to it than the stories and it's satisfying to hear someone talk about who the gods truly were instead of the modernised Marvel versions of them. Like i never hear about the golden apples of Idunn or about the customs and traditions of the followers of the gods. The way the Vikings actually lived instead of just the bloodshed. It's actually truly fascinating to hear. I'd make the video myself, but, i don't have the voice for it and I don't know how to do the videos with just a phone, and a phone has poor quality to do videos with. A good reference for it is "A Modern Guide to Heathenry" by Galina Krasskova. And another is "History of the Jonsvikings" by Lee M. Hollander.

Hel is still sort of invoked today in Norwegian (maybe other Scandivanian languages too, idk). "To death" in Norwegian is normally "til døde", but in some cases like "he bled to death", many will instead say "i hjel", which basically means "to Hel". "Hel" also means "whole" in Norwegian, but I don't think that actually has anything to do with the goddess.

@leonr8255
@leonr8255 6 лет назад
But he only had two children with his wife, and neither of them killed any gods (one was them was actually murdered by a god). The three kids of doom you're probably referring to were birthed by this giantess Loki would "visit" behind his wife's back. The wolf only killed one god though, and so did the serpent. Loki's wife is actually a pretty minor goddess, just like Loki himself. The Norse gods are just surprisingly vulnerable as Hel. One of them was literally killed by a spear (thrown by a fellow god, but still). Thor was also killed via poison (from an abnormally large serpent, but still).

Gk Yetti Having read on Norse Mythology myself a bit while most stories don't really have a set time I should Think Thor's fishing trip would take only weeks or months after The serpent was cast into the sea before it grew to its full size thus allowing the serpent to raise its head, this also makes that story far more meaningful as It's stated that Thor can Kill a full size serpent after a long battle then he possibly could the younger version and cause drastic alterations to Ragnarök maybe freeing him up to help Odin or Fight the Frost Giants, I mean it was probably the fates who snapped the line or posed the giant to cut the lines so that Ragnarök would remain unchanged but it's an interesting thought.
@TheExploringSeries
@TheExploringSeries 6 лет назад
In the prose edda, during the account of Utgard-Loki tricking Thor, he states, "It was the Midgard Serpent, which encircles all lands, and from head to tail its length is just enough to round the earth." After that, it says that "from then on he was determined to find a way to confront the Midgard Serpent, and later on that happened." It then leads in to Thor's fishing trip. While I absolutely agree that timeframes within Norse Mythology are incredibly murky, Snorri at least wanted to make it clear that the Serpent was fully grown when Thor pulled it up, which is why I cited it as a potential contradiction, not that it makes much of a difference.
