Bhopal
It is said that, Bhopal, the capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh was founded by the Parmara King Raja Bhoja in the 11th century. The original name of Bhopal was Bhojpal. Pal means a dam. After the Parmara dynasty, this region was ruled by the Gond kings. The present city was established by Dost Mohammad Khan who was the soldier in the army of the Mughals. He received the territory of Bhopal from the Gond queen Kamlapati in lieu of payment for mercenary services and usurped her kingdom after her death. In the 1720s, he built the Fatehgarh fort in the village, which developed into the city of Bhopal over the next few decades.
Bhopal became a princely state after signing a treaty with British East India Compan in 1818. For almost 100 years, Bhopal has been ruled by four Begums from 1819-1926. The first women ruler was Qudsia Begum who ruled from 1819-1837. Followed by Sikander Begum, Shah Jahan Begum, and lastly Kaikhusrau Begum who ruled till 1926.
