We cycled the Hebridean Way in Scotland, a 185 mile cycling route that traverses 10 islands in the Outer Hebrides. We enjoyed the route despite the notoriously challenging weather, with winds nearing 50 mph and quite a bit of rain. We made a stop at the Callanish standing stones and got to see seals and quite a few deer. We began this video in Glasgow, cycled to Oban, took a ferry to Castlebay, then finished the route in Stornoway.

I did it the other way round in 2012. Ferry from Skye to Tarbert then Stornoway, then south from there to Castlebay where I took the ferry to Oban. Great place. I was there a bit earlier in the year: July.

Beautiful place - enjoying following you both! Admittedly, your pronunciation of names is amusing 👍 I’m always shouting at the screen whenever you say ‘route’ or ‘buoy’ though! 😜😜😜
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
Haha, route is an interesting one. You hear it pronounced both ways in the US so we forget that it can be a contentious subject. Buoy is just a weird word all around.

I really enjoy watching your videos. They always seem to have such a “Chill” quality. Maybe it’s the music. Another thing I like is that Jenny’s rear paniers are always perfectly closed. I bet that Hilleberg tent came in handy during all that wind and rain at minute 10:00! Should have just slept in those beds at minute 12:30. So you’re headed to Oslo? Can’t wait to see which stops in between, Germany by any chance? Take care, RheinKing!
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
Thank you, glad you enjoy them! The beds were very tempting, haha. And we're really behind in video editing, so we've actually already made it to Oslo. We did also go through a small part of northern Germany. Lots more videos coming out soon as we work through the backlog of footage!

That windy wet camping spot! Yeckk. Your tent looks very similar to shape and size to the one we used for our European cycle trip. Great having a bigger tent.

Hello, great trip! Can I ask about your experiences with the horizontal slide out and the rohloff hub? I'm interested in this kind of set-up. Thank's for the wonderful video's! Greetings from Belgium.
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
The horizontal slide outs have some massive disadvantages. First of all, they are a pain to align. Every time we take our rear wheel off we have to make sure the wheel is centered in the dropouts which is a pain because it shifts as we tighten the axle nuts. Second, they tend to slip under high torque if you don't use something to lock them in place, we're using a Surly Tugnut on one side. Third, in order to get the rear wheel off we have to remove our rear fender to slide the wheel far enough back to get it out of the dropouts. It makes fixes a rear flat much more time consuming. The only real advantage to the horizontal dropout is that it allows us to avoid a chain tensioner for the Rohloff. A frame with an eccentric bottom bracket would avoid all those issues and also avoid a chain tensioner. However, we decided on the Surly Ogre frame because 1) they're relatively cheap to get in the USA ($700), 2) they can accommodate 29x2.0 through 29x2.6 tires, which was our main goal with this bike.

I’m thinking of doing the Hebridian way this year, though not camping!) so loved this video. Definitely south to north looks like the way to go (especially after seeing you battle against the wind going south on your next leg!). What are the midges like when you’re actually cycling? I know, from experience, when you’re walking you can outpace them 😅
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
When cycling they're only a problem when you're going very slowly uphill and can't maintain enough speed to outpace them. In the Hebrides they weren't an issue at all because it was so windy!

Scotland is my Second Favourite Place of Mine and the First is Switzerland. What's Yours?
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
It's hard to choose! Switzerland was absolutely incredible. In Scotland we got very unlucky with the weather so I think we need to give it a second chance in the future. Croatia is another place that is high on our list - beautiful cities, coastline, and mountains!

Very nice video. We cycled the Outer Hebrides, Isle of Skye, etc. in 1984. On Harris the rains fell almost horizontally so it looks like conditions haven’t changed much. Lewis was spectacular. Did you need or ask for permission to camp?
@RollingExistence
@RollingExistence Год назад
Yeah the weather was extremely challenging! In most cases we were pretty far from any houses, so there wasn't really anyone to ask. And wild camping is legal in Scotland (unless there are signs stating the contrary) so there's a pretty relaxed attitude toward campers as long as they're being respectful.

This was early June. According to locals, we were especially unlucky and it's not usually quite this bad in June.

We saw them a handful of times in Scotland at ferry/bus terminals, they seemed more prevalent there than anywhere else we'd been in Europe.
