Exploring St Helens Sea Fort Isle of Wight Victorian Palmerston Fort with DJI Phantom 3 Standard and Panasonic GH4 2017.
One of the Sea forts built designed to protect the port of Portsmouth.
A revisit from last year, this time back with my DJI Phantom 3 Standard, Sadly this time round the fort was locked.

The fort was built between 1867 and 1880.
Each year in August, there is a mass walk out and around the fort, during this spring tide the causeway appears from the sea upon which the original materials were carried out from the shore at St Helen's Old Church.
Please note that there is no safe access to the top of the fort.
The only way up is on a rusty, slippery ladder and then out around the spiked cage at the top, it is incredibly dangerous and I would strongly advise not to attempt.

Panasonic GH4 with the 12-35 f2.8
DJI Phantom 3 Standard
Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro CC
Graded with lumetri and some custom LUTS
Music Created by me in FL Studio with the following VSTs:
FM8, Nexus 2 and Absynth 5.

Awesome video. Just got back today after spending a week in Thorness Bay. ❤️ the Isle of Wight. Is the abandoned ice cream factory that was disguised as a fuel pumping station in WW2 still on the Island?? Can you recommend any WW2 sites to visit on the Isle of Wight? Looking forward to going back in 2018.

Hi Alex, there are loads of forts and fortifications dotted all over the Island (most not specifically built for ww2, however, many were used). If you can time your visit with when it is open I would highly recommend Bembridge fort. There are also lots of pillboxes and a few air raid shelters. The P.L.U.T.O pumping station is still around (located in Sandown). Thanks for watching 👍

While I'm here, I was always curious about the church tower at St.Helens - I was there in the mid 1970's, and it is such a weird thing to see, sitting as it does, right on the water's edge. I was on the Island again in 2015, but didn't visit St. Helens on that trip, so (a) is it still standing, and (b) do you know why it is as it is. I saw it at dusk, and it looked very sinister indeed.

Hi Brian, yep the tower is still there, reading up on this the Tower was added to an existing church structure in the 13th Century, there's a brief section about it on the national trust website that I found interesting: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/st-helens-duver/features/the-story-of-st-helens-old-church

Thanks 😁 there are quite a few abandoned places in Sandown including the Grand Hotel, The Wightcity complex (Colonel Bogeys Nightclub, Jolly Sailor Pub and Arcade), Rivoli cinema building (which is currently being knocked down and loads more. 👍
