The North Shore Branch is an abandoned branch of the Staten Island Railway in New York City, which operated along Staten Island's North Shore from Saint George to Port Ivory.
In this video, we will explore the section of this abandoned line from St.George to Tower Hill.

The NSB could be reactivated and St. George can be converted to a through-station by replacing all the excessive number of platforms with a single wide island platform being laid sideways. Then, HBLR’s Blue line can be extended from 8th St to Tower Hill to provide a convenient transit link.

I explored the ROW a few weeks ago. I visited Mariners' Harbor, Elm Park and Lake avenue but I couldn't visit port Richmond or tower Hill or walk the entire ROW because there's SO MANY PLANTS on the tracks. The ROW between Elm Park and Tower Hill is completely overgrown and impossible to walk

The North Shore Line was not abandoned in 1957. It remained open as a freight only line until Procter & Gamble closed their Port Ivory Complex in March of 1991. (Procter & Gamble was the Staten Island Railroad's biggest freight customer) 1957 was probably the time when the North Shore Subdivision between St George and east of Arlington Yard was "single tracked". (The Arlington bound tracks were pulled up from about where the South Ave overpass is in Mariners Harbor to the foot of Jersey St and Richmond Terrace. And with the removal of the signal system on both the North Shore and East Shore Lines, the North Shore between St George and the Arthur Kill Rail Bridge became "Dark Territory". ) In addition to P&G, there was also Terminal Lumber in Mariners Harbor, near the abandoned Lake Ave Station. There was also a paper manufacturer in Elm Park, I think called Cross Sinclair if I'm not mistaken. Then on the Perth Amboy Subdivision, (the "South Shore Line" between St George - Tottenville) there was Nassau Smelting & Refining and they continued to receive rail service until at least, the end of the 1980s. In addition to Nassau Smelting, there was also the Staten Island Advance, (the local news paper) in Grassmere near Fingerboard Rd. Then you had Farrell Lumber Corp in Great Kills. These industries were typically switched in the evening, after the evening rush hour ended. By the mid 1980s, after New York Susquehanna & Western took over the Staten Island Railroad's freight operations from the Chessie System. The Right Of Way east of Elm Park was getting so heavily overgrown with weeds, train crews basically had to cut them up just to get freight through. Finally by September of 1989, all freight service east of Elm Park was permanently suspended. This cut off rail service to Nassau Smelting and whatever other industries were still receiving rail service. (Freight service to the south end of Staten Island didn't last to long under Delaware Otsego's management, the parent owner of NYS&W) With the closure of the Port Ivory Complex, the Staten Island Railroad from St George, all the way to Cranford Junction, in Cranford NJ was abandoned. The last freight train pulled off Staten Island was on March 9th 1991. Then the switches at Cranford Jct were locked with a railroad padlock and the electrical controls for the Arthur Kill Rail Bridge were disabled. From that point on, the St George - Tottenville portion of the Staten Island Railroad has been operating as an isolated railroad, severed from the National Freight Rail Network. Kinda feels like the derelict track at minute 6 etc is still there to hold the island together or at least delay the erosion - intriguing stuff, thanks for doing the legwork on this one \m/

WOW, I wish they never abandoned that line. Now the MTA wants to make it a BRT. They should make it train line, I think it would be much better.

Agree. It should be reactivated as part of Staten Island Railway line

I’m so confused why they removed the North Shore branch
@edwardp3502

Low ridership and competition from city buses, which undercut the SIRT fare by a few cents in the early 1950s. The B&O Railroad owned the line and couldn’t afford to run it. A shame since the line was completely rebuilt just 20 years earlier.

Is it illegal to walk along the tracks of the former North Shore Branch? If not how do you get there? Where are some places where you can get good pictures of the decaying stations?
@Urban_Man
@Urban_Man Месяц назад
exit from St.George, and you can walk next to the former ROW.

What does ROW stand for? When you say St George? Is that a street? Or a subway station? I looked up George Street and it doesn’t seem to be near a track. I could be wrong though. Do you think that Sharpe Avenue is the best place to see a decaying part of a station along the North Shore Branch from the street level, without trespassing onto the tracks?

@@Urban_Mangot it, thanks. Was the ballpark station part of the North Shore Branch? It opened in 2001 and closed in 2010. All the other stations closed in 1953. What’s the best way to get to Staten Island from Long Island or Manhattan? It’s not illegal to walk along the abandoned tracks by the Mobil gas station where Livingston station is? Do you know a way to get to the tracks that are elevated? Or is that too risky? I don’t want to get caught by NYPD

it was not part of the original, but is on the same rail line. You can take the ferry from Manhattan.
