In the middle of Sweden, close to the border of Norway, 1000 vintage cars sit abandoned, being slowly reclaimed by the earth. The Båstnäs Car Cemetery is easily one of the creepiest places we've ever visited, but it was so worth it!

Hello there !! Saw that you have visited my “car cemetery “ In Sweden ! The only information that was right was the one about two brothers starting it in the fifties, If you had tried the phone number I would have gladly given you the story about the place! I did like your portrait of the place. Let me know if you’ll like the story....? Kind regards Tomas Ivansson One of the current owners

Hi Eric and Allison Falu red or falun red (/ˈfɑːluː/ FAH-loo; Swedish: falu rödfärg, pronounced [²fɑːlɵ ²røː(d)færj]) is a dye[1] that is used in a deep red paint, well known for its use on wooden cottages and barns. In Finland, falu red is known as punamulta ("red earth") in Finnish and rödmylla ("red dirt") in Swedish, after the pigment, which consists of finely divided hematite, iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3). Since the binder is starch, the paint is permeable to water. In Estonia, falu red is known as Rootsi punane ("Swedish red") and is most common in Western Estonia in the former Coastal Swedish territory. The pigment historically originated from mines at Falun, in the province of Dalarna. It was a side product of calcination of copper ore. Mixed with linseed oil and rye flour, it was found to form an excellent anti-weathering paint. The earliest evidence of the use of falu red dates from the 16th century. During the 17th century, falu red was commonly used on smaller wooden mansions, where it was intended to imitate buildings with brick facing. In Swedish cities and towns, wooden buildings were often painted with falu red, until the early 19th century, when authorities began to oppose use of the paint. Increasingly many wooden buildings in urban areas had by then begun to be either painted in lighter colors such as yellow or white, or to be sided with stucco. The number of buildings made of bricks had also increased.

There may be multiple reasons for why the red color is popular. The pigment was a left-over from cooper production and maybe the paint made out of water, rye flour and flaxseed oil with the pigment was cheap and a simple solution for people with less money and/or large buildings. It's also easy to maintain since eventually it start to crack and crumble and fall off but you can just brush away the pieces and paint it over again. It's also worked pretty well and let the wood dry up again and by weather rather than trap water inside with some plastic coating. I think you can paint over it if you brush it of but if you use some other paint it may be impossible to go back unless you scrap it all down to just wood again so you may not be able to get back if you replace it and as such that may not be something you want to do, also it's tradition and how things should be =P

DEFINITELY try Gus's Fried Chicken (its the best) and Rendezvous. Both are excellent. I used to live in the area. And if you want a slight detour on the way to memphis, take the batesville exit off of I-55 towards oxford. Oxford is only about 20 minutes from batesville and they have really INCREDIBLE restaurants on the Square (big bad breakfast, ajax and Snack Bar are some of my favourites there). Plus there is a back way into memphis from there (dont worry it's not complicated at all and google maps will be fine to navigate it) which is 1000x more scenic than I-55 is. Have fun!

4:32 Most cars had the steering wheel on the left side because a) they felt it was safer to exit on the side that the sidewalk was on and b) many cars from countries such as the US were manufactured with the steering wheel on the left side so it would’ve been unnecessary expenses to switch it. Obviously the safety aspect of it had a downside as well, which is that if you overtake someone in left hand traffic, while driving a car with the steering wheel on the left side, your view is obstructed and you might crash into other cars.

The reason so many houses around Sweden are painted red is because of a copper mine in Falun "Falu Koppargruva", which in the 17th century was the worlds biggest copper mine and produced 2/3rd's of the entire worlds copper, today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A bi-product of all this mining was a pigment that was discovered to create a very vibrant red colour, that also had the perfect properties in preserving wood. So that colour eventually spread to all parts of Sweden and is today ingrained in Swedish culture. It's still produced to this day in Falun and is called "Falu Rödfärg" and is a protected brand.
@H.Lindahl
@H.Lindahl 4 года назад
During the Swedish great power period in the 1600s, the mine occasionally accounted for two-thirds of the European copper demand. The mine was the largest industrial workplace in the country, at times over 1000 people a day worked in the mountain. In 1650, the mine was the absolute top year with a production of more than 3000 tonnes of raw copper.

In norway the reason for the red colour on farms is that it was the cheapest to produce way back when. It was created by mixing ochre with cod liver oil (or other vegetable oils or animal oils). As a result, many buildings in farming lands or fishing areas where incomes were lower than average were mostly paint in red. And we have just stuck with the colour, as a tradision i guese! 😁

So about our red houses. The typical Swedish "Falu red" colour is made from pigment taken from a copper mine that was started up in the late 700:s or early 800:s and then was active until 1992. So about 1200 years of mining goin on there. The colour then spread all over the country because it turned out to be very efficient when conserving wooden structures so it was first and foremost used out of necessity more so then fashion. Today, since 2001, the mine is a world herritage site. About the cars, Sweden drove on the left side of the road until a 1967 referendum where the people actually voted to keep left hand driving but the government changed it anyway. What is weird though is that even back when we had left hand driving we were using cars made for right hand driving so we never actually had cars with the steering wheel on the right side, they have always been on the left side. So I doubt the car cemetary has anything to do with that.

In sweden they have signs warning for speeding cameras right before them. Speeding cameras in sweden are placed in places where its extra dangerous, like steep curves, bad sight, intersections ect. They're not meant to be hidden just to give people tickets. They're meant to be seen to make people slow down in those dangerous areas. Its an effective way to do so. Also the "tolerance" for speeding in sweden is 6kmph, meaning a cop or camera tolerates people to speed 6kmph over the limit so u wont get a ticket going just 4 kmph over the limit. Also speeding tickets are not something the car owner is responsible for. Speeding cameras takes a picture of the drivers face, and they use face recognition software to search through the national driving license databases to check who was driving the car. That person will later get a speeding ticket in the mail. If u cover ur face for a speeding camera they cant charge you a ticket. In that case they will call the car owner and ask who was driving, but the car owner can just claim he/she dont remeber who drove the car that day. Since u're foreigners ur faces are not in the database, so the police would have to call the car rental and ask who was driving the car and I dont think the police bothers to try and find out who was driving a rental car.

The biggest reason most houses are red in Sweden. Is because, in the city of Falun they manufactured copper in large quantity and have done for many hundreds of years. a by-product of that manufacture is a red powder which is mixed with water, among other things. It was a cheap color that everyone could afford to buy even the poor. so nowadays it is a tradition to paint their houses red

I stayed with a Swedish family for a couple of weeks and all the small houses on their street were the same color, the next street over was a different color, and so on. I asked why and they said that for their area, every time it was time to paint, the street would vote on a new color and every house would be repainted the same color. No one could paint their house a different color. Kind of like a condo complex in the US, but it wasn’t!

If the speed camera flashes that means you got caught but if it didn’t you are good to go. Also if you use Google maps you can see where all the speed cameras are :)

You just basically tried to pass off a junk yard as a museum. Really ? Hope all the mud came off. I love Scandinavia but I can see that stuff three miles away from where I live.

Wow this place is so cool! Great stuff! But one complaint though.. not liking the "This episode on..." previews added on your recent videos.. Guys these videos are like 13 mins long. I will sit through them even without the "teaser" in the beginning. Just putting unnecessary repetition. Anyhoo, thanks guys!
