*For some reason the video is really blurry and low quality, I’ve noticed this with a lot of my videos which were shot on GoPros and I have no idea of how to fix this. I’ve researched on the internet and that hasn’t helped at all, tested the camera in bright and dark places and everything I do doesn’t help. Even 4k footage looks identical to this, any advice is welcome in the comments.
This very old culvert runs underneath Chichester city centre, it's about 230m long and carries the River Lavant. The river is a winterbourne, so it only flows in the winter or when there has been excessive rain. So sometimes it's dry and other times it's a torrent which could knock you off your feet and kill you. The River Lavant was diverted to act as a moat around Chichester in the Roman times, but when the city expanded it was put in a culvert and forgotten. There's no exact date of construction for these culverts, but it's believed to be sometime in the 1800s. The River Lavant has a lot of culverts on it, especially downstream. But of all the culverts on this river, this one's the most interesting. There's a much longer culvert upstream from this one, but it's harder to access and much smaller, possibly a crawl. So that one will be reserved for another time.
This one was a killer for me, very low down for most of it's length and it just gets smaller and smaller. There's also an unfathomably large amount of spiders in this one, so I'm bent double to avoid them. Access, although very easy, is quite tricky due to the culvert being right in the city centre and right next to a busy carpark and pathway. Got a lot of funny looks entering this one, a few asked but luckily I didn't get in any trouble.
This is actually quite unique footage of this culvert, mainly because it's the first one to show it with water flowing inside. Most other videos and photos show it being completely dried up, only requiring shoes to walk inside. But when I visited it was a wader job and you could feel the force of the water.
