Pena Palace- Portugal’s fairy tale castle sitting on the Sintra hills, is a national monument and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Portugal. It is even said that Pena Palace inspired Walt Disney when he created his castles in the stories. No wonder that it is one of the seven wonders of Portugal. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site!
Built around the 1830s, Pena Palace served as the summer residence of Portugal’s monarchs in the 18th and 19th centuries. When Ferdinand II became the king of Portugal he decided to build a palace on the ruins of a medieval monastery destroyed in a tragic Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The palace was to become a summer residence for him and his wife, Queen Maria II.
Fanciful to an extreme, the architectural fabric of Pena finds much of its inspiration in the Moorish, Gothic and Manueline motifs of Portuguese art (red buildings), as well as in the Wagnerian spirit of the Schinkel Castles of Central Europe (yellow buildings). Part of the palace is covered with traditional Portugese decorative tiles - azulejos.
Arabic influences can still be found in the Portuguese language. For centuries, the region was ruled by Arabic-speaking Muslims known as Moors.
