Exploring the Fear of Death or Dissolution

In this video, Rupert is talks about the fear of dissolution, loss of identity, and the concept of self. He discusses the fear of disappearing and the attachment of identity to thoughts, feelings, and physical form and how recognising oneself as pure awareness and focusing on the experience of being aware can alleviate the fear. By resting in this awareness, the old identity gradually fades away, and a deep sense of immortality and eternity emerges, dispelling the fear of death.

If is that so, why people who have NDE ( Near Death Experiences ) keep the knowledge, memories, awareness, they know the people, they float on the room, or building. When a friend of mine died at a hospital, on the time of death, I suddenly felt a perfume, a fragrance around me for some seconds, her fragrance. After some time, I knew that she died precisely at that time. How can someone explain that ?

True. I had to leave last webinar and distract myself with thoughts because I saw through the ego and I saw the fears coming up and I wanted to avoid non duality. I don't think there is a remedy to avoid the "last fear" when the ego dissolves and consciousness is reveled. But I did get a taste last night that there is something familiar you want to go towards despite the fear but it didn't happen this time even when I didn't try to avoid it.

It is such a fantastic subject and in this area Rupert does have no experience. It is not original to quote the tried and proven, 'die daily'. it is by practice of excellent meditation/ yoga that complete experience is gained. But here Rupert is only talking from his meditative experience, not from the reality that occurs at and beyond death. Like many others, I have died, and I do practice excellent meditation. I can assure you that there is a greater revealling that occure, an immersion into a greater sense of self, a continuation and actually retreat to the next originating body, and perhaps another after that if indeed excellent yoga was gained. But, rest assured, it is a grand journey and all this seems a mere trifling and whimsical joyride afterwards. No one religion has a franchise on the joy of life; by definition it is universal. The loving spirit within wants to expand and grow into its Father and all this plus more is available to you. Fear is the safety mechanism and crucible part and parcel with the bodies survival features. Once dropped, it is no more.

@@andrewcoates1 How do you know Rupert has no experience here? Do you really think he could explain all those feelings of oneness, of no time, of true love, if he did not have the experience? Dr. Nagy Arnold Rupert Spurs: “I’ve never experienced the disappearance of myself” Therefore, without wanting to sound disrespectful in any way, shape or form, that means this is just his best guess or opinion. I’m a realist, I want people to keep an open mind on what happens upon death. I like listening to Spira but I wouldn’t call him a ‘teacher’. Philosopher or seeker, yes, but teacher, no not in my opinion. Death as I see it is not something to fear regardless. Of all the outcomes that seem most logical to me, death as Mark Twain wrote seems logical I.e “ I don’t fear death, I was dead for billions of years before I was born and never suffered the slightest inconvenience from it” or as an alternative, the version Spira represents in this talk I.e we won’t know, it’ll be as though we never were (if I’m understanding this talk properly) and therefor we need not worry. Anyway just my take on all of this, again just my opinion on it. Must say though the most fascinating question I always find myself pondering is, what is this all about, life? Where do we all come from? Was it a lucky accident (or unlucky depending on who you ask)? Was it creation? What is it all about? Is there a point? It’s something I ask myself often when, on a cloudless night, I stand in the back garden and stare up into that big void and cast my eyes across the stars. It makes me feel so small and insignificant haha. Hope I make sense.

@@mementomori4355 I have studied religion from cultures around the world, old and new, philosophies about what may be true, science in all forms esp quantum theory, I've looked at nature with discerning eyes and discovered patterns repeating from macro to micro, I've studied the connection between sound, geometry, and mathematical grids. I am not tooting my own horn, i am just giving some background. Im sure I'm leaving so much out. Shamanism, Toltec sorcery, alchemy, you get the point. I have had a burning need to have understanding of who I am and what I am, where i am and what is this whole experience of life, where does it come from and how and why; all the deep questions to life I have needed to understand since I was very young, since probably about 6 or 8 I began to really wonder. However i could not get any satisfactory answers from any adult or priest at the local church. I began with the bible. Its all i knew to do to begin finding answers. Then I didn't take much from the bible except that I was moved by the words of Jesus. The rest was stories and history and bored young me. It was a chance encounter with the abstract concept of sorcery that began to move my mind beyond its borders which were pretty much non-existent anyway as i too am very open minded and consider all possibilities. I began using weed to expand my awareness into unfamiliar places and mushrooms and acid later which to this day have given me so very much for the little cash spent. Priceless experiences, knowledge in the form of visions, the experience of the co-mingling of senses and extra sensory experience. The books of Toltec sorcery started my quest official tho. I had to keep going. I have satisfied every question I have ever pondered except a select few that aren't too important anyway. I still keep an open mind as to details as to how and why but I have found the key that fits every lock for me personally. Not sure why I'm describing this at random with background and all hahaha I'm doing this just as much just to do it as i am to receive any replies. I'll finish this thought

When this sadness of others especially of our youngest son 13 over the disappearance of my body and person I come to see that this will be part of their path and wisdom in a kind of way. I lost my dad when I was 19 and it was thanks to him that all my adult life I have been in yoga seeking and wanting to understand this inner eternal feeling that I always had, an instinct telling me “you don’t die no one does…” Sat Nam my friend.

My take on it is that your perspective right now is ultimately real to you in terms of identity, along with the story you assume and attach yourself to. Eventually everything will fade along with the attachments you made throughout “this life time” but those are simply objects and perspectives in your singular consciousness. None of your perceptions exist without your consciousness and your participation within them. It’s all you. When this is over you will wake up on another level and understand it’s been just you this entire time. Form is the dance and illusion of separation because it’s fun to forget about for a little while. I admire your capacity to love, at the same time that is what we are. Love is all that is

I disagree with the sleep analogy somewhat, although I get the point Rupert is making. The reason we don't fear sleep, as Rupert says, is because it gives us a break from the mind, a few hours of restoration and respite. The reason we fear death is because death is not analogous to sleep in that respect; there is no break. A break implies that we'll wake back up again in our mind. Death is not a break. Death is a permanent loss of who we think we are. Note that for people who haven't achieved spiritual realization, who we think we are is simply our minds, thoughts, emotions, bodies. That's why death is so scary.

Why are you not afraid to go to sleep at night? Because you’re pretty likely going to wake up. It’s a nice little break from consciousness. Death is a break that lasts FOREVER. And while forever is nothing to a consciousness that doesn’t exist, it certainly seems like a long time to my current consciousness. Like, let’s admit that it’s the forever part that is what terrifies us. Or, at least me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gary Bentlage answer is yes. Awareness will be there, sometimes aware of subtle realms and sometimes absorbed into itself. its not a static state. People have an idea of this constant state of awareness of nothing after death, like an ever lasting sleep but that's the creation of the mind. I have some certainty on this based on my experiencial insight. i also had this idea of a constant static state of awareness of nothing, but I've seen how in complete absorption into the void there can suddenly be awareness of subtle realms and then go back to complete void. it was a great revelation, my view now is that anything is possible for the divine, set no limits. Basically, awareness will be present.. awareness in void. and certainly in subtle states. Nothing is greater than awareness. i also say i don't know what will happen after death haha. It's really a great mystery, but i simply don't set limits of what's possible. You're greater than you can ever imagine.

B-) I very much appreciate what Rupert speaks to, though the existence of our own consciousness seems a rather mysterious gift, there seems to be no evidence that it can exist without a platform like our living brain and no real evidence that it existed prior to our biological conception. As a child half way through one summer I got saddened that it was "half way over." When there were only two weeks remaining, it occurred to me that I might have better enjoyed the 2nd half of the summer if I'd not been so busy lamenting its pending doom. CHEERS ! B-)

The peace of sleep is wonderful, but I am left wondering what the function of dreams and especially nightmares is all about. Bad dreams are more powerful, than waking nightmares, and can disturb us in the waking world far more effectively than a lurking murderer.

I have seen the other side. It is more real than this. Unfortunately not many people by accident or otherwise have seen the other side. I can't ask you to believe me because belief is wrong. Knowing is right. Your body and brain have convinced you that you will end. It is this fear that makes you ask other human beings the question. Not a day in my life passes without asking the question. I know exactly the terror that the mind undergoes when confronted by its ending. Although I have seen this present existence to be untrue, in the ordinary everyday human state, my mind fears its end. All I can do to comfort you is to say that we will all be relieved when this is over.

How do you know that all knowledge accumulated inthis life disappears with dying/? Why is it possible that family members , friends who have died can make contact with their lovend ones here if they have no knowledge of what happened here on earth. I know not everyone experiences this.,but there are those that do. I follow your teaching with serieus interest and find your approach very enlightening. Thank you , Margaret

im afraid of death, not because im afraid to lose my thoughts and feelings reincarnation would be acceptable to me, but im afraid my consciousness will just cease to exist.. I hate the idea of annihilation, whether it will bother me when im dead or not, regardless it bothers me now.. it would be like never having existed at all.. He said when you sleep you don't cease to exist, many masters say the true self observes the blank during deep sleep, but i don't see it that way to me its like fading from existence for a time and returning, like how some particles do in physics im not afraid of going to sleep because im sure i'll wake up.. I just don't want to permanently disappear, i wish i had assurance but i don't believe in wishful thinking.. Ramana maharshis enlightenment for example was a tremendous fear of death, then he realized he was not the body and suddenly believed he will live forever, i mean no disrespect he was definitely a great sage and teacher, but he came to this conclusion with no evidence just belief.. i wish i could get past this fear, it traps me in Nihilism

W S it wasnt belief, it was experience for maharshi. You will experience it as well as you go a bit further. Right now you are equating annihilation with the loss of your sense of me, which of course will have to go. But unidentified awareness remains, through sleep through death. Was there ever a time where there wasnt awareness? Its not possible. There arent different times, there is just all time, right now right here. Poof a form explodes “into” existence, then is “gone” some time after. Language gets difficult here you must live it, just keep watching and soon WS will drop away ;)

please clarify this wth ref to your explanation in this talk >>when we go to sleep ,yes, we look forward to go to sleep but we go to sleep with srongest belief that we are going to wake up tomorrow morning. Is this not totally diferent from the questioner's in this talk who says he gets a feeling that he is going disppaer . how to reconcile to this with refernce to one who goes to sleep trusting he is going to get back to the same life after 7 or 8 hrs and see and experince everything ...just a gap .....can rupert kindly explain this.............. thanks

I associate myself with my unique view-point. I am I and not you because of that! Fear of Death is the fear of loosing that specific view-point. To overcome that fear, one shall suggest that the view-point will not be lost, but perhaps become a part of the universal library. sort off

It is rather simple, as Rupert says. You could say that all the sound and fury about death actually boils down to a simple case of mistaken identity and, that is all. It is not about believing this because it is a matter of investigating identity directly. Is it true that, other than by way of some imaginative fusion, (as if in a dream) we cannot be what we can know? If so, then simply being what we really are does not even require us to know anything at all, at the source.

With sleep we know or at least we are fairly certain (however misplaced that certainty may be) that this collection called me will reappear when I wake up. With death it is certain that no reappearance will happen. So death and sleep are not the same. So just bcoz I don’t fear sleep doesn’t mean I don’t fear death.

8:20: = the remedy for this fear is very simple : just look at yourself.Ask yourself "what do I refer to when I say 'I' ?".Go there,take the thought I...I am aware of my body,of this room,of these words,I am aware of this,of that;just stop with the 'I am aware'.Every experience contains it:"I am miserable","I'm happy",I am sick,

I was thinking about this and realized that I am a completely different person with different thoughts, dreams, wishes, perceptions and problems than the person I was as a child. But I am still the same "me". So far, this is as near as I can get my head around the so-called death of the person while awareness continues.

I feel i have the opposite problem, I long for the absence of the me through sleep or death or meditation but cannot get it. I am a chronic insomniac, it seems the me wants to fight as hard as it can to prevent letting this illusion go. And we live in a world that is rotting, we cannot survive, if one is poor how do you drop this survival mechanism? It is basically suicide.

I have had massive fear of death. Or rather.. annihilation. I had a friend commit suicide when I was a teenager and it instilled this fear in me that when I die, "I" won't exist anymore and perhaps confusion from being raised a different religion. It's strange for me to think when my body dies, I won't have a personality. Does that mean I won't be reunited with my loved ones because they also won't be them anymore?
@yanakord1078
@yanakord1078 3 года назад
Just the opposite. There will be neither bodies nor minds. But there will always be you and your beloved ones. Don't confound Your Self with the idea you think about yourself (or your personality, identity) which "covers" Your true Nature. All happens from within you, not outside of you. And the most amazing thing - you don't just stop fearing to die. You cease fearing anything at all. It's not in our true Nature to be afraid. Fear comes from the wrong identification with bodymind. And that's what we are not.
