A close up look at the now ghost towns and former railroad town of Wellington, WA including the old Cascade railway tunnel. Watch as we explore up close the Great Northern Railway avalanche train disaster debris site. The Wellington avalanche occurred in March of 1910 and was the deadliest avalanche in the history of the United States, marked by the total death count of 96.
Wellington was quietly renamed "Tye" during October because of the unpleasant associations of the old name. In the same month, the Great Northern Railway began construction of concrete snow sheds to shelter the nearby tracks. The depot was closed when the second Cascade Tunnel was completed in 1929; the town was then abandoned and it eventually burned.
Many visitors to this site have experienced unusual phenomena leading some to investigate and ask is this site haunted. We will leave that up to the induvial.
Many ghost towns and historic mines in Washington State have already disappeared from history and many more are being lost each year to the ravages of time, wildfire, vandalism, and intentional closure. In addition to our many years of photographic documentation of these important historic sites we are now attempting to video document as many sites as we can so there is a lasting record of these places for future generations.
