NEW Number ( 775 ) 900- 0507 - We get special permission to go side the infamous Sutro tunnel that was dug by Adolf Sutro in 1869 outside of Dayton, Nevada - A distance of 3.88 miles . The tunnel was designed to drain water from the Gold Mines of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City - The Sutro tunnel today is still draining water from those mines .

Regarding barns being red: Long ago farmers would seal their wood barns with Linseed oil, they would mix in Iron Oxide to prevent mold and rot, this why all those old old barns are still red as they rot into the earth.

The steel block directly out in front of the tunnel was used by surveyor when digging the tunnel. Aka a surveyors marker. Used to keep digging straight from start to finish when the tunnel was being built.

Areet Jeff ❤️💛💚👍 great video man. Very interesting video. Fun fact for ya in this country people used to keep farm animals on the ground floor and the family would live upstairs. The animals would be safe from thieves and family would be warm from the body temperature of the animals. I used to live in a house from the 1600's which started out that way.

I was part of the drilling and blasting crew working at the Comstock mine when they started to open pit it . We would drill into old tunnels and after we would blast the loader would dig out old mine cars. I think they got 3 or 4 cars the 2 years we had the contract before they decided to go underground.

Wow....great wood. I guessed a planer since it was a wood shop

It is my understanding that, by the time the tunnel reached the mines, the workings were well below the tunnel so that it was of less value for drainage. The "bank crowd" that controlled many of the mines frowned on the tunnel as it competed with their Virginia and Truckee Railroad and the mills they owned on the Comstock and along the Carson River. The planer is actually a moulder or matcher as it did the edges as well as the top. Probably, the side cutters could do profiles such as tongue and groove or shiplap. Very informative video. How hot was the water coming from the tunnel?
