I love how the first patch is called “It’s An Oberheim”, hell yeah it is 😂 I just got mine a few days ago too. I love the form factor. This thing is gonna be traveling with me.
Best teo video yet, thank you. This thing absolutely slays at 1500, I predict it will sell very well. And thank you for not spending 5-10 min pointing out specs we’ve already seen. Love the format here

Nobody wants an 8 voice monosynth, that’s ridiculous. The market for sequential isn’t dying for wavetable functionality either. Nor does any of this cross into muse territory. Other than that, you nailed it
@@russcontact ignore him, he is a complete idiot. He thinks the Pro 3 is the best synth ever made, I own one and had one on release, he bought his 2nd hand after he was telling everyone they're crap and the Matrixbrute was better, then a year later he bought one and changed his mind. He is clueless about synthesis, he makes bleeps and bloops, runs down every other channel because he is jealous of talented individuals.
@@brianlespoir6287 get the TEO 5, have that control the OB6 and you're going to have a hell of a layered pad, granted it will only be 5 notes but the movement you will get using 2 OBs, well lets just say it's a ton cheaper than shelling out for a OBX8, but with different capabilities.
UBXa is an abomination when it comes to that keybed, and yes it's not always about voice count when you have a SEM filter and all that modulation to play with. Let's not forget that horrible red display on a flagship synth. Fwiw they've dropped by almost 20% here, they can't get rid of them.
I have an UB-Xa, and after the last update (V2.0) there have been a lot of improvements. Being a clone of the OB-Xa, it is a much simpler synth with just an LPF which you can switch between 2 and 4 pole. It does sound very lush though, and having 16 voices gives you a lot of freedom to play what you want without having to think about voice stealing too much. The polyphonic aftertouch is the icing on the cake. The keyboard does feel light, but it's entirely playable for me (though I usually play it through my master controller, which is the hydrasynth 49). If the keyboard is a big concern, then you can always get the module, which saves space as well.
@@danielguerrero5122 no it's a poor synth with poor quality keybed that Behringer calls a flagship synth, they got the T mixed up with the P. It should be called "flagshit" synth. For the same money you can actually get a proper synth, with good oscillators and good FX along side with a SEM filter. Quantity doesn't beat quality.
Glad you got your hands on one! I’ve commented before bringing up the Take 5 (one of my all time favorites) and I believe the reverb on the TEO-5 is the same. FWIW, having that dedicated reverb channel and being able to modulate the pre delay is fantastic. Love the layout of this series from Sequential, so fast to make patches and the sounds are THERE!
@@MilesAwayOfficial My reason for watching the video was nonetheless TEO-5 and I watched it to the end even if Raffles hadn't shown up. Of course I wouldn't mind if one of the cutest kitten ever joins any video. 🥰
totally agree with you, this to me feels closer to the ob-x8 than the ob-6, i was hoping was closer to the 6 but alas, still a great synth and super value
@@vincentmorelli1013 I don't like the OB-6 apparently. I did a 15 round blind test with the X8, UB, and OB6 and I picked the OB-6 as my least favorite of the 3 sounds 15 times. It's not like I knew it was the OB6. Something about the way it sounds just irks me. The X8 is as good as it's going to get for those classic X/Xa/8 sounds which is why I ended up getting it.
I’m very happy that it doesn’t sound like the ob-6, it’s not that I don’t like the ob-6 but I was missing that “Oberheim” Sound that this one has. Both are great synths
As a take 5 owner I can tell that this type of synth is very fun, now I really hope we will see a Transistor-ladder based with this mod matrix from Sequential as well! :)
Being able to modulate reverb and 3rd wave cross modulation is dope man you did an epic demo of the stuff I wanted to know . The gas ⛽️ is real but I’ll most likely be getting the TEO-5
I was waiting on your impressions on it before I made the jump! I sold my T5 not long ago to look into getting a P6 but honestly felt like I was shooting myself in the foot. Walked into my local GC, saw they had a couple in stock and managed to get one with 20% off retail due to some wonderful CS help. This thing sounds absolutely gorgeous. I had a Matrix 6 before and this imo sound so much better and livelier than it!
@@MilesAwayOfficial absolutely loving it especially way more than the T5! I have it paired with a Virus TI2 and a Juno 106 so I feel like most of my poly needs are taken care of :)
Wow! Just wow. Why am I just as impressed by this synth as the Muse? $1500 seems like a bargain after watching this. I think I just found my new synth. Great first impression video!
Great Demo. I had a very short play of it recently at SynthFest. I was gonna buy an OB6 desktop but this is quite a bit cheaper - I wish there was a desktop version. I also wanna buy the OB-X8 at some point - the keyboard version up close is really a heirloom instrument like the prophet 5/10, just stunning. I have so many hardware synths already though and I already put a deposit for a Moog Matriarch - I like hardware synths and cannot lie 😉. Super looking forward to your Oberheim TE05/OB-X8/OB6 deep dive so I can decide what one to get first.
It's a really good time to be into synths, literally all of those are great choices, just depends on personal preference. Hope my comparison ends up helping ya!
What are the main source modulation options like? Is it just two LFO's or can you route any ENV as source? Can you de-couple them from being normalled (to filter, amp, etc)? That would be pretty incredible if so. The sound is definitely monster Oberheim.
So good, have had mine for about a month now and love it and my take 5 love lofi effect so much it can be noisy but is so sick. Migraine two is not enough keys at least they give you the option to lower the bottom half an octave or two wish all synths had this option. also love that it stores where you keep your octaves on patches which all synths should do wish my trigon did. like many others I have been wishing for a 61key 8 or 16 voice bitimbral version with 1000 patch dual effects & reverb
Awesome video! I’ve had mine for a couple weeks now and absolutely love it. At 15:31 you mentioned you wished you had more keys, have you messed around with the low split feature yet? That really helps bridge the gap. You can set the divide point to wherever you want as well. Pretty sick🔥
That would be chasing their own tails. The point of this was to make a smaller, more affordable OB-X8. They could select 1 of the 3 vintage synths built into the X8, but they would just annoy 2/3 of their customer base that wanted the other two. There’s no win in doing that.
I mention in the video but this makes me realize how much a Polyphonic Pro-3 would be the greatest synth ever. 8-16 voices with this mod matrix, give it all the Pro 3 filters and oscs.
I have some stuff to do but will deff check this out, looking forwards to it actually, and I know you will make some stellar banks too. I love your 3rd Wave ones!!!
@@MilesAwayOfficial I'd say the place to start is looking at images of their internals and then the signal routing. I'm sure you know, but others may not: the OB-6 has an independent circuit board voice card for each of the six voices, whereas the TEO-5 is "all on a chip". As far as signal routing, like the Take5, the TEO-5 has digital VCAs (and the analog distortion is also digital in the TEO-5 - still sounds good on the TEO-5, as it doesn't narrow the signal range as much). It's just more of modern hybrid, whereas the OB-6 is more of a "classic" analog synth design. The TEO-5 sounds amazing. If they had a desktop version I'd be tempted to get it vs. the GS e7 to compliment my OB-6 desktop. The TEO-5 is far more suitable for deeper sound design than the OB-6. But it doesn't seem to sound as "alive" or as beautiful as the OB-6 unless you apply effects. Having recently applied a Meraki and Mercury X to the OB-6, I don't miss internal effects except for the ability to include them in modulation. Also, I'd get that mega synth you mentioned! I'd also sell most everything to get it.
OB-6 sounds different and WAY better. This doesn't do much for me. It sounds more VA like. OB-6 is one of the best sounding synths of all time, including vintage. Trigon-6 is great too. TEO-5? Sounds small and the Digital VCAs definitely hamper the sound.
Isn’t it redundant to buy the Teo 5 when having the OB6 and OBX8? What made you get it and what were you missing from the others you found in the Teo 5? Thank you!
@@MilesAwayOfficial I know and understand that. I own the above mentioned synths myself and I’m also looking at the Teo 5, so wondering if there’s something it offers that unique the others don’t, if really needed when you have the other ones. I also have the Take 5 and the Prophets. Thank you!
Lovely looking and sounding synth. Behringer cannot really get the looks of their synths right and the quality is generally not on par with Sequential. Was gonna say the initial patch was very Prophet 5 and glad you said it... 5 voices is usually fine for this kind of board. I only upgraded my Prophet 5 to a 10 because I like analogue piano sounds or other sounds with long sustain. For typical synth work it is fine.
@@indigosnow_thank you! It is really amazing sounding but make sure you are ok with the motor noise in the room before you get it. I don’t mind it but I could see it annoying people if you need perfect quiet to focus 😂on
Man, this is a great sounding synth. Part of me wonders whether I'd be fine with selling my OB-X8 and having this and something else for the same money. I imagine the 5 voices would feel like too much of a limitation. Definitely would have been a genuine option if this had also been available when I was considering my OB-X8
I was in the same situation, that is why I went MUSE / TEO-5. But will wait for the other OB comparison videos. I can still get the desk version of the OBX8 instead of the TEO-5.
Yea I thought the same thing. But nah, 8 voices of OB is just too good. If they made a 16 voice polyphonic Pro 3 style synth with this filter and workflow, then maybe I would be tempted to sell the X8…
@@MilesAwayOfficial that is good to know. Thanks, I think the TEO-5 is or was an opportunity to test the waters. But as you mentioned if they would have made this into a proper 61 key, 8-16 voices poly with split/layer, bi-neural, poly AT. The OBX8 would have been in trouble. I love the OB sound, and the reason why I am on the fence of getting an OBX8 is, yes due to the sound, but also nostalgia. I used to own an OBXa, Yamaha CS60, Jupiter 6 (with the Europa mod), and a sequential Pro 1. Sold them all about 15yrs ago. Do I regret it, maybe but mostly due to the resale value and the collector aspect. But the reality is that the bench time and money to fix them + the months you have to wait was more of a hassle than enjoyment. Too expensive, big and heavy. The reality of all is that I only used the OB for pads, sweeps and some strings. That is my nostalgia. On the other hand seen what the TEO-5 can do despite not having 8 voices, and the shortcomings of the predecessor including the OBX8 makes me reconsider if I want to go back to the limitations of these synths or do I want to go and beyond and explore more rather than a nostalgia flinch. That is quite a dilemma. And No the obx8 does not sound the same as my old OBXa. Nice recreation of having all 3 in one box and the closest we’ll ever get to the real vintage ones. These are wonderful times for synths, there is so much out there to choose from. Can’t wait for your comparison videos. Thanks

@@dankeplace LOL! 😂 right after I finished filming this , I noticed that. Well, that’s how you knows it’s legit first impression at least. Stoked you enjoy and excited to show ya!!
It sounds nice, but I kind of don't get the excitement. I say this as someone who spent twice as much on a Murmux Adept earlier this year. I'm trying hard to understand how this isn't Just Another Subtractive Synth. It really seems as though most people would be better off with a MiniFreak. Help me understand?
Fair! Mainly the Oberheim filter is what is coveted. just like a moog Ladder filter, the OB SEM filter has a very distinct sound that is pretty hard to achieve with other means. Very 80s synthwave nostalgia.
It's an Oberheim-based synth, not Prophet-based like the Take5. Tom E. Oberheim (TEO) are his initials. It's better than the Take5 sonically and with the through-zero FM.
@@cfs Ok thanks. I don't know what through 0 fm is. The OP six is a deep fm synth but im not very nerdy so I bought the native software version. I have the take 5 and they do look quite similar. Im waiting on a solar 42f next. Behringer has made a version of the Oberhiem, but having a summit I have no more space for larger kit. It does sounds nice...
I know, the obx8 is even more boring looking with an even smaller screen. Maybe theyre just focused on something other than looks… cant quite put my finger on it though
@@dankeplacemost of the guys who comment things like this either haven’t made a single track and if they have, it’s incredibly mid and will never make a dent in the industry. A pure synth dork.
barely touched the mod matrix, no real tzfm. not even filter fm. the power in these synths is that they have the incredible raw analog vco and vcf tone WITH the added ability to sculpt them and add moevment to them with crazy modern digital modulation. you can modulate mod slots, you can stack slots for deeper values than you'd ever get with the front panel knobs, you can recursivly modulate modulators, you can create your own fm operators. i assuem youve never touched a take-5 for some god forsaken reason? you dont have to read the manual, but man. glance at a spec sheet or something. maybe a quick start guide
Why the hell are you being so negative? This was a solid first impression video of him unboxing and figuring things out, not a deep dive. Plenty of other videos on that already.
@@fjfrancois this guy tells people what they waste their money on, this guy is the worst person giving out any advice as all he does is troll. Everyone was laughing at him because he never even knew what he had bought lol. I might get a TEO 5 to pair with my 3rd Wave, I am just looking at options. I will eventually get one but just seeing how things pan out. How do you like yours, everything you expected?
plz crank out an ob6 comparison, that's what everybody wants and nobody has done it. Plenty of videos showing off the TEO-5's sounds. Given you're such an ob6 fan, we're all eager to hear that comparison and your thoughts. Thx
Have a Take5 which is very similar and the mod matrix is a huge plus. Btw you can do a low split on the keyboard pretty quickly if you need it. Looking forward to your follow up. Cheers!
Congratulations! Sequential/Oberheim really hit it out of the park with the Take 5/TEO-5. My Take 5 is my favorite analog polysynth by far (I expected it to be the OB-6 but the Take 5 beats it). The mod matrix is amazing as are the effects (I also love my Take 5’s reverb), and as you saw the effects parameters can be modulated. One feature you didn’t discover yet is Low Split, which makes the smaller keyboard less of an issue. It’s a great feature I wish more synths/keyboards had. Next you need a Take 5. Also check out the Erica Synths Nightverb.
I'm not overly fond of my T5, it doesn't do what my Rev 2 does with pan spread so kinda use it for solos or w/e. I'm not saying it doesn't sound good, just that it doesn't have as much movement spatially as some of my other gear. It's a keeper and I will have the trio soon with the TEO 5, have the T5 and Pro 3 already.
The teo-5 is my personal choice for the breakthrough synth of the year and we had a lot come out this year. I prefer this unit to the ob-6 for several reasons. 1. Waaaay better oscs that are more harmonically rich than the ob-6 due to multi selectable fixed osc vs the variable design found in modern machines. 2. The envelopes are modeled a bit better on this unit due to the ob-8 modeling. I still prefer the x/xas exponential curve but the ob-8 has nice envelopes and I’m glad they chose it. 3. The mod matrix on this unit really encourages the Oberheim ob lineages sonic aesthetic to be pushed in ways that have never been touched. I’m glad you got your hands on this unit and I’m sure you will put to great use. The take 5 and teo are the best beginner synths for someone that seriously wants to get into synthesis.
@@Nunchuckstraberry that’s high praise! You have definitely spent more time with it than me so far but I do agree it’s really surprising how much better it sounds than it should for the price. Whether it can dethrone its big brothers… time will tell!
You might want to look inside the synth too..😉 The OB6 build quality is better and has separate discrete Voice cards for each voice so very easy to replace and higher quality.. The TEO 5 is like a very cool small OBX8 sounding Oberheim with interesting modulation.. The OB6 is very sweet and unique in its sound it´s a different modern version of Oberheim and Sequential combined thats we love it. I´m not saying the TEO 5 is bad its fantastic! Its just that the OB6 will remain a modern classic that was a once in a lifetime collaboration between Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim.. Very Special! and because of that collab and influence we get the birth of the little TEO 5! everyone wins!
@@nagchumpalot I’m not sure I agree entirely. I’ve owned an ob6 desktop for years now, and I think based on solely YT demos the teo 5 might actually top the ob6. Firstly, it has through zero frequency modulation or tzfm I guess peeps are saying. This opens up a lot more timbre options vs the ob6. 2nd, if by discreet voice cards it becomes a better build? Cards are replaceable when or if in stock no? Same with full boards etc. As you mentioned, modulation is off the charts on this thing…. All this to say I also have an obx8 - I am going to sell my ob6 for a Teo-5, I think it’s that good!
@@MrCowfood I played the TEO 5 for 30 mins at SuperBooth.. Its good but im not ever selling my OB6 😃. OBX8 is awesome to my mate has it but for me the 6 voice OB6 is perfect I have other synths if I want to go modulation crazy. Either way you can't go wrong with any of these!
15:30 about more keys for, say, playing a low drone and some higher notes, quoting from the MusicRadar review: "there is the genuinely great Low Split keyboard option that lets you extend the keyboard downwards by a couple of octaves - not physically, obviously, you lose your existing octaves and they just play lower, but it’s great for players who want that wider range."
As an owner of the ob8x, prophet6 & trigon6, I wanted the ob6 to complete my collection, and now I’m not sure if I rather the teo5… first world problems
OB-6 > Teo-5. It's obvious. The sound is smaller and more digital-ish on TEO-5 (the Reverb can confuse the issue but raw vs raw the OB-6 has a lot more depth of sound)
I've got no more room, and after your video I'm considering selling my Moog One for this little guy. The sound from just your short jamming proved the sound is top tier
@@MilesAwayOfficial The Moog One is wonderful if you have lots of time to tweak just to get your sound right - it really is a sound designer's dream... but when you just want to make music and be in the ballpark of "good sound", it won't give you much compared to the instant gratification of the Juno, Prophet 5, and now the TEO-5. Those three sound like they're ALL sweet spot and so you can't go wrong - oozing of sound! Whereas the Moog One reminds me of the Rev 2 - tweak for a while to get something hopefully decent
The best part about this particular on boxing, Miles, is how you sound like you can intuit the modulation matrix in a fashion that makes it more comprehensive to people like me for who modular synthesis has always been something of a mystery.
Cute cat. So is the OB-6 still your favourite synth? I own an OB-6, and don't really have room for many synths. I don't want to part with the OB-6 because it is just so easy to use (with no menus etc).
It's too early to tell but gut feeling I still like OB-6 more than this. This is more like a light-OB-X8, its hard to describe but it doesn't really give me the OB-6 vibe, nothing does
@@MilesAwayOfficial What is it about the TEO’s Reverb that you think makes it wayyy better than the OB’s? (clarity, control, etc?). You said it is way better than the P6 and OB6 reverbs … not way better than the Trigon’s? I think it’s a generally acknowledged rule that Sequential effects have just steadily improved, over time … ? Cheers! #CatsOnSynthesizerBoxesInApartments
This is it a very impressive sounding synth with some very nice sweet-spots. Thanks a lot for this Video it shows how easy the TEO-5 is to use, and how versatile it is right out of the box. As a log time Oberheim SEM fanboy and owner of a Oberheim SEM Patchpanel. The new Oberheim TEO-5 is definitely a synth I do consider.
I'd be interested in how close you can get to the TEO-5's Oberheimy sounds with the 3rd wave. I'm asking because I'm eyeing the 3rd wave and have seen you being impressed by how well the 3rd wave's VA allows you to create classic analog sounds (including. Oberheimy sounds?). Thanks!
OB comparison tonight! But as for the 3rd Wave, check out my Vol 2 patch demo, lots of the patches there are OB themed. It's great, but it definitely leans more Prophet than OB
So glad you got your hand on one !! Was waiting for your reviews ;) Can t understand after all request on the take 5 , why they still don t give paramaters values feedback on the screen , crazy !!! Only notes values for pitch ect ,.. but as you experienced with the delay fx , it can be a pain
@@MilesAwayOfficial Yeah this has been asked for the take 5 also ....did ya find the tuning stable by the way ? Would love you to test the take 5 and the Beringer desktop ubxa
At 15:40 you say you can't play higher, and you wish it were more than 3 octaves...but you can, the key split can extend the range by up to 2 octaves IIRC.
@@MilesAwayOfficialunderstood...hard to capture it all at first. Great review...you have shown that this is a unique offering, and is worth well more than the $1500 it costs...a unique Oberheim in its own right.
Seems like an interesting one. You now have all 3 modern Oberheims! What do you mean when you say the OB6 has a hybrid sound? Which bits are plastic on the TEO? Can you put some wood on those cheeks?
They could have given it the same button layout as its bigger brothers. Button placement looks weird especially the cut off. It all just looks asymmetrical. Bigger brothers have a nice orderly layout.
@@MilesAwayOfficial I would say I like them about as much as each other tone wise, trigon can saturate the hell out of the filter and the teo has the sem sound and you can kind of resonant the filter. Teo wins in versatility though. Less oscillators but you have a polyphonic lfo and you loose an oscillator anyway if you play on using it for poly mod below audio rates on the t6. Also cross mod is insanely useful on the teo for fm sounds.
7:08 money shot with the modulated reverb! I have a Minilogue XD now, and the modulation capabilities of this Teo-5 and the Take-5 are really wanting me to upgrade =p
That would be a pretty sick upgrade but remember you would miss the digital multi engine ! I really like the Minilogue XD, but mod wise this is definitely an upgrade
@@MilesAwayOfficial While the idea of the digital osc is great, I've honestly not really used it for anything other than noise, so I really don't think I'd lose much. Now I do think I find the inherent sound of the Sequential more pleasing over the Oberheim, but both are top tier sounds, at a more accessible price, hah!
Looking forward to big comparison! Every time I listen to x8 sound I feel inner emotion and this doesn’t happen when I listen to teo 5. Very subjective
