Exploring the old Yankee Stadium in 1996

This was the only time I brought my video camera to the old Yankee Stadium. I didn't snag many baseballs, but had fun wandering around, catching up with familiar faces, and seeing Darryl Strawberry have an epic day at the plate.
When editing this video (20 years after the fact), I added some commentary to help guide you through my tour of this magical building.
Thanks for watching!

I miss 90s sports. Those were the days. Athletes were making money but the whole experience wasn't 100% corporate yet. Real people and real fans were in the stands and things were reasonably priced. It'll never be like that again.

Mc Shibby It’s the old places that really do echo the ghosts of the old guard.Mantle,Maris,Dimaggio,Ruth Gehrig,Ford,Jackson,Martin,Larsen, Wells,Jeter,Rivera and Posada.I’ve been a lifelong Red Sox fan but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Yankees because of all the history that they have.27 rings don’t come easy and to have the run of dominance they had from the 20’s to the early 2000’s is incredible.If your a sports fan it’s hard NOT to appreciate the Yankees.

Man yall need to stop crying. I loved the old stadium too, and scoffed at the idea of building a new one at first....but once the Red SUX came back from down 0-3 AND won the deciding game 7 AT said stadium, it was over. They destroyed whatever mystic and aura it had left. And if you don't believe me, then what happened to the yanks after 2004? 2005-2007 ALL 1st round exits, and 2008? Missed the playoffs for the first time since 93. It was time to move on. The ghosts of the old stadium would understand, hence why they won the WS the 1st season in the new ballpark. Now the problem they made was tearing down the old one in 2010. They haven't been to a WS since. The ghosts are clearly mad and l dont know how the yanks can please them 😢

This made me want to cry. My dad would take me all the time back in the 90s. He passed away in 2018. Anyway, there was nothing like the old stadium. Walking through the gates at dusk to be welcomed by Eddie Layton’s organ music, to Bob Sheppard, to knowing the Yankees were probably going to win. Also with chasing HR balls in the upper deck, what viewers might not realize is how steep the angle was and how dangerous that actually was. Once I saw two grown men both fighting over the ball, and then they both fell and started rolling down a few rows like an avalanche.

@conpop6924 4 года назад
My uncle once in the 80s was at a game in the upper deck with some friends. Some fat guy broke a seat and when he left my uncle wanted it. So he went to pull it out and as he did he went tumbling down like 5 rows of the upper deck. After that he was determined to get that seat and he did! He put under the shirt of his friend on his back and he wrapped his arm around him to act like a gay couple and hold the seat in his friends shirt. And they walked out of the stadium with the seat!

There will never be another ballpark like The Stadium. But, it's time had passed. On my first visit as a 9 year-old in '66, we noticed how old it looked. It was eventually refurbished, but you can only put so much makeup on before realizing that, It's time to move on. But the memories. Jeez!

I went to so many games at the "old" Yankee Stadium, including the Maier game, and miss it a lot. 1996 was such a magical year, especially having grown up watching the 1980s teams. I've been to the new stadium twice and I have to say that as sad as it was to see the old place torn down, the pain and shock of the move was eased partly by just how much the new one looks like the old one, at least from the seats. The amenities and the space are really nice but they don't make up for the fact that when you look at right field in the new stadium, you're no longer looking at the spot where Babe Ruth stood; when you look at center field, you're no longer seeing the spot where Mantle and DiMaggio played.

I've only been to three MLB games (live in England) but my first was a Yankees vs Mets game here in 2006. My Uncle got us tickets from a tout a few days before and he paid alot for them considering it was for the upper deck but I'll never forget that day, was a sell out, people everywhere saw like 3 fights one was a chick fight, saw a few home runs but got alot of nostalgia for the place watching this video. My second game was at Shea so I feel very lucky to have witnessed both stadiums.

My only visit to the stadium was in August,1964. The original Yankee Stadium. I was 12 years old. The Yankees played the Red Sox and won 9 to 3. Mick hit one out to right center. Roger didn't play that day. Hector Lopez played in right that day and hit a home run in the right field seats. We were seated in foul territory near the right-field foul pole. In those days Yankee games on TV were in black and white and we only could watch a game on Saturday. Most of the time we listened on a transistor radio. So walking into the stadium in full color blew me away. That green copper facade and I had never seen grass so green before. The stadium was gigantic. The bathrooms and ramps to the seats were disgusting and dirty. We couldn't afford hot dogs or other refreshments so we just watched the game. The next day we went to the World's Fair. We stayed at The Dixie Hotel in Times Square and went to dinner nearby. It was the first time I had ever been out to a restaurant for dinner. I had spaghetti. We didn't see any other sites because we couldn't afford them. For our family, a picnic in the local park was our summer vacation so that trip to New York was really something special. I never got to visit the rebuild of the old stadium and now with the cost of tickets, I'm back where we were when I was a kid. I could never afford to go to the new stadium. Thanks for posting this tour. Those upper deck seats looked scary but the view of the game is really terrific. I hope to get to visit Heritage Field before I pass away and just walk out to where we sat that day and just take in the field and remember.

The stadium design was made to keep the seats closer to the field, unlike the current stadium. If you wanted the fans in the upper deck to still have a reasonably full view of the field, you needed to make the upper decks steeper. I spend my entire childhood there. I was born in 73, so going to games when I was young was pretty easy, because they didn't win many games. We had a crappy team in the '80s, but that was okay by us, because it was easier and cheaper to get in the game everyday. Video is cool, brought back a lot of memories. You should have had less commentary though. Not that you suck or anything, but I think people would rather get lost in the moment it was being taped, rather than your updated take on it. But I am not boycotting the stadium like others lol...I am as big a yankee fan as any and realize as time goes on, you can only do so much to an old stadium. At some point you need to build a new one. The new stadium has some amazing amenities in it and if the Yanks didnt build a new one, fans would be complaining about that. People that complain about the new stadium still wish you could go see a show in a booth on 42nd street. Times change..Yankees realized it was time and I could love the old stadium while appreciate the new one for what it is.

Unless the building was literally crumbling due to some disaster, then it would've still been fine like with Fenway and and could've had amenities added. New one was really built to milk more money from casual rich fans. But whatever; I'd rather see a few more world series more than anything.

Great video! So many memories of the old Stadium including attending many of the greatest playoff games in the 90s (incl. Game 6 in 96') and 00's (incl. WS Game 4 in 01' and ALCS Game 7 in '03). Amazing energy! I will go against many of the commenters below and agree with you Zack that I understand why management opted for a new stadium. People tend to forget how dingy, crowded...the old stadium was. I remember attending a game as a 14 year old and completely losing my Dad in the crowd, it was an unsettling feeling - especially with no cell phones! Also, the food/dinner options were so so limited, basically hot dogs (often with no condiments) or bust. The newer one is laid out far better (i.e. sight lines to the game from the concourse without even having to walk to your seat) with so many nice food options and I've come to really enjoy attending games in it. I get the nostalgia of course and do wish they didn't have to tear the old one down but that's not how things work. Anyway thanks for bringing me back to simpler times!

Ah, the good old days of VHS tape recording. Where you had a TRACKING control, and if you didn't USE IT, you got annoying white lines at either the top or bottom of the video. >_

It seems like the new stadium doesn’t have the rowdy fans. It looks too corporate?
@Kevin-it4fh

Lol, it's not really the looks. More of the price and the relative lack of success.

Trust me the new stadium still does have rowdy fans, they’re just all at the bleachers

Thanks for sharing... makes me so nostalgic. You're 100% right about how much better the concourses are in the new stadium. I wish you had footage of the old tunnel going into the stadium from the parking lot with the guy playing the piccolo!

I remember that guy, used to play Take Me Out to the Ballgame and stuff. Here's a picture of me in that same walkway (with my anti-Clemens jersey)--unfortunately my shot doesn't include the guy, but he's probably right in front of me, obscured. 1.bp.blogspot.com/_tbBYNu0qnow/SX0-JHbZh2I/AAAAAAAAIvk/k14rs2r7DVw/s1600-h/jerewalkway.jpg

And now I see that in the blog post I had that picture in, I mentioned the guy! Though I called him the "flute player." letsgosox.blogspot.com/2009/01/brut-signjeres-yankee-stadium-tribute.html

My college roommate and I drove from the Chicago suburbs in 08 to see the last year of the Stadium for a May series against Cleveland. We saw Mussina and Pettitte for the Yanks and Cliff Lee for the Indians. We sat in the outfield for the first two and our first reaction was how tight and dark it was under the bleachers even for an old stadium. Fenway has a lot of room under the outfield and Wrigley was bigger (even pre renovation) too. Cheers from a fellow baseball dork, almost the best time of year again. Have a great season.

Wow this is incredible! So many great memories at this park. There was nothing like walking out of the gray, dingy tunnels to see the field in front of you. It was like entering Oz. I went to so many games back then and that never got old. And all the ghosts.....

I love the new stadium.. I’ll be the first to argue with somebody that bashes it.. the look, the feel, the setup is great in my opinion.. I’ve seen many games at the old place and boy do I miss it.. but I understand why the change was made. The biggest thing I miss was walking through the tunnel and the field opening up right before your eyes..especially with a packed house in October. The upper deck... you lean to far and it’s aaaallll over! I miss it, but I love the new place.. great memories here

Did you hear the stadium tonight?? place was ROCKING! and its May! Its never going to be like the old place but boy was it loud.. If the old place was a 10/10 in noise.. this is a solid 8/10...Atmosphere seems back on track and its intimidating again

A soulless shopping mall with a baseball field in the middle. We’re all entitled to our opinions but for me , ALL the charm is gone. Upper deck, gone, Right field porch, gone. The pure joy of walking out of those portals, seeing the magic, gone. And you’d think they could have put up an accurate replica of the facade instead of a half assed replica.....Those who signed off on moving to the new park should be jailed. Maybe an overstatement, but that’s my take. All due respect to those that enjoy the new park but, you’re missing the point. Going to the original Stadium was an event in itself. And it’s gone .

I don't know why but I miss the steepness of the upper deck bleachers. It gave you the feeling that you were sitting directly on top of the game.
