In this month's video, Dr. Franck Marchis, Director of Citizen Science at SETI Institute for Unistellar, and Dr. Lauren Sgro, Project Outreach Manager for LaserSETI at the SETI Institute, will provide an in-depth update on the groundbreaking LaserSETI project. They will explore the remarkable potential of this global network of instruments, specifically designed to detect laser pulses from extraterrestrial civilizations. Beyond the search for alien signals, they will also discuss how LaserSETI's capabilities extend to the study of meteors, satellite reentries, and the mysterious phenomenon of vanishing stars.

Its kinda cool that it is working backwards. Most seti attempts ride on the back of conventional astronomy, here is a seti attempt that conventional astronomy will ride on. Wish there was a way I could help besides donation.

What many people forget is that laser is significantly more powerful in terms of communication throughput than radio. Magnitudes better. So, it’s far more likely an advanced civilization would use it over radio.

You can achieve higher bandwidth using lasers - but at a higher energy (and therefore "power", in the physics sense) cost. Whether that is cost *effective* (economic sense) may be a more open question. Say you have a "advanced" civilisation - advanced enough to send out a colonising mission to a neighbouring stellar system using STL. The "colony ship" (gamete banks, brood equipment, mining robots) will include (because storage is cheap) all the digitiseable culture of the source civilisation. So, once the mining robots have done their thing, and built habitats suitable to operate the brood equipment and the gamete banks, what needs to be transmitted is any updates ; not the entire digital culture. That's a much smaller download, and the power (Watts ; bits/s) of a laser communications system may not be necessary. Assuming the source civilisation's members are long-enough lived that the gamete donors are not dead yet, they may have something to say to their half-offspring. But after a few generations, that's going to die away. So ... what is the use case for high-bandwidth communications? How are you going to sell this construction project to Small Furry Beancounters from Alpha Centauri? (I am assuming a science universe, not an SF universe.)

I perked up at the mention of a Dyson sphere. I had been thinking of that as an example of why a star might dim...
