In this episode we explore the village of Cheddar. As as child I (Chris) lived in Cheddar and still have family ties to Somerset and the area so I wanted to share the sights of Cheddar Gorge with you.
There is a reason that Cheddar Gorge is one of the top attractions in Somerset and if you do head to the South West of England then don't skip a visit to Cheddar Gorge.
We booked our Cheddar Gorge passes online and saved 15% by doing so - so make sure you're organised and don't buy your tickets when you arrive at the Gorge.
Cheddar Gorge has not changed that much over the years and generally still looks the same as it did in the 70's - now I'm showing my age ! We started our tour of the the gorge's attractions by visiting Cox's Cave. They have really modernised this and the cave has been transformed into a light and sound show. As you explore the caves you get an insight into live of early man. A great show which we loved - generally good for kids of all ages.
Next was Goughs Cave - this cave has been left as a cave - no light shows here - and the cave is amazing - you'll definitely get some serious photos here !.
Of course Cheddar is famous for a number of things - it's Caves, Scrumpy and of course Cheddar Cheese. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is the only company that still makes Cheddar in the village of Cheddar. You can still see their cheese maturing in Goughs Cave. They have a shop on the Gorge and you can buy a huge variety of Cheddar Cheeses, including the one that is aged in the cave. At the back of the shop is a small museum where you can learn about the making of the cheese and see it being made and packed - well worth a visit.
If you're feeling fit then make sure you visit Jacobs Ladder - The 174 step climb takes you up to the top of the Gorge and Jacobs Ladder is a tower that gives you superb views over Cheddar. When we visited it was closed for refurbishment but I have been up it many times and it does deliver on the views.
If you walk further up the hill from Jacobs Ladder you will be met with views just as good and if not better so do take the walk.
We finished our day at the Gorge with a drive up in Trudy - Make sure you do drive up (or down) as the cliffs are great and if you're feeling adventurous there are many walks.
