In April of 1963 I came to Kalkan from Istanbul, riding a scooter and after crossing the Toros Mountains, following dirt trails. Stayed one night in Kalkan at a so called Hotel that had only 2 or 3 rooms. Next morning I could not find a gas station for the scooter which was running out of gas. Someone took me to a house where the owner had a barrel of gasoline in his back yard. He used a ladle to fill the tank of my scooter. However, he also provided the information about how to get to a nearby ancient cemetery located on both sides of a small stream where two story high marble tombs were lined up for more than a mile. Interestingly only a scooter could take someone to that cemetery, after taking a long trail which took me almost an hour. Following the stream I ended up at a beautiful beach which displayed a magnificent marble amphitheater facing the sea. I have no idea how the whole place looks like today, since I way been away for almost 60 years ?

Sounds like a very interesting trip you had. I wonder if the beach you came across was the one in Kaș, which is about 18 km along the coast from Kalkan? There is an ampitheatre there which faces the sea, but I don’t know if there is a mile of marble tombs there - I only had time to pass by Kaş and didn’t have time to go into the town. I’m sure the place would be quite different from how you remember it - we went on a new highway past Kaş, and there were lots of houses and towns along the way. It sounds like a wonderul memory anyway.
