USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. She is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. She was launched in 1797, one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. The name "Constitution" was among ten names submitted to President George Washington by Secretary of War Timothy Pickering in March of 1795 for the frigates that were to be constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so Constitution and her sister ships were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. She was built at Edmund Hartt's shipyard in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. Her first duties were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France and to defeat the Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War.
Constitution is most noted for her actions during the War of 1812 against the United Kingdom, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant. The battle with Guerriere earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides" and public adoration that has repeatedly saved her from scrapping. She continued to serve as flagship in the Mediterranean and African squadrons, and she circled the world in the 1840s. During the American Civil War, she served as a training ship for the United States Naval Academy. She carried American artwork and industrial displays to the Paris Exposition of 1878.
Constitution was retired from active service in 1881 and served as a receiving ship until being designated a museum ship in 1907. In 1934, she completed a three-year, 90-port tour of the nation. She sailed under her own power for her 200th birthday in 1997, and again in August 2012 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory over Guerriere.
Constitution's stated mission today is to promote understanding of the Navy's role in war and peace through educational outreach, historical demonstration, and active participation in public events as part of the Naval History & Heritage Command. As a fully commissioned Navy ship, her crew of 60 officers and sailors participate in ceremonies, educational programs, and special events while keeping her open to visitors year round and providing free tours. The officers and crew are all active-duty Navy personnel, and the assignment is considered to be special duty. She is usually berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard at one end of Boston's Freedom Trail.

I had the privilege of visiting it in dry dock so people got to engrave their name on the brass plate put on the ship. I’m happy I can say my poorly written signature is on the USS constitution

This is a bucket list of mine, to go see the USS Constitution and HMS Victory first hand. I absolutely love the Age of Sail and only ship of this kind I have been on is the USS Constellation in Baltimore Maryland.

The HMS Warriors is a cool ship too. I highly recommend you visit the naval museum in Greenwich. It has amazing stuff on display including Admiral Nelson's officer uniform. It even has a hole in it when he was hit in the shoulder with a musket ball!

Hey, this is my neck of the woods! Living in the Boston area, I love to bring guests here. You're right, she's so much bigger than you think she's going to be. But even so, can you imagine how cramped those quarters must have been below decks with that many sailors and marines aboard? Every year on July 4, she sails out into the harbor for a turnaround cruise (though usually not under her own power iirc). There's a lottery to get a spot onboard for it, but I've never won. Since you were there, and made it up to the Bunker Hill Monument, I hope you got a chance to stop in at the Warren Tavern. Yeah, it's a little touristy, but it's still a neat little slice of history tucked away there.

No matter how many times I have been in that ship it was always a pleaser. If you past bunkerhill and down the other side you will see a set of blue public housing. There is a sign in front of them on the other side of the street on the sight of the Boston neck.

I live less than two hours from here. I’ve visited her twice-with family and on a high school Boston trip and it’s great thinking of how a ship so old could still be afloat

Fun fact, if the Constitution was a British ship, she would be classified as a 44 gun Fifth Rate Ship of the Line!
@carronade2456
@carronade2456 3 года назад
Also, there was one time where the Constitution was challenged by a British frigate to a race and she won!
@danielwemyss9354
@danielwemyss9354 3 года назад
Being a fifth rate would actually classify it as a frigate, only 4th to 1st rate ships were considered a ship of the line.

When was this filmed? Next time you are in the area let me know. There's an awesome yearly ww2 reenactment a little ways west of the city every year, and if you are interested in the Pilgrims and native Americans, Plymouth plantation is an awesome place to visit.

That was my last trip before Covid, in early 2020. My 2nd trip to Boston. I visited Plymouth and the Adams homes on my first trip, in 2017. On this trip I visited here, Bunker Hill, Lexington and Concord.
