Today I'm diving into the best places to visit in 2024 based on lists from US News and Reader's Digest. But here's the thing, I've got my own take on these destinations, comparing, critiquing, and offering my personal favorites along the way.
Starting off, Tokyo and Paros, Greece grabbed my attention for their unique vibes and beauty. Tokyo's a must-visit for its rich culture beyond the city, and Paros offers a gorgeous, less crowded alternative to the Greek island experience. While Turks and Caicos and Belize didn't make my cut due to current issues and lackluster appeal, I suggested Puerto Rico and Aruba instead for their accessibility, stunning beaches, and vibrant food scenes.
The Maldives and Turks and Caicos were skipped for safety and political concerns, leading me to highlight the Canary Islands as a fantastic, budget-friendly destination with amazing Spanish cuisine and pleasant weather. I mixed feelings about Spokane, Washington, despite its Expo 50, but London stole my heart for its accessibility and vibrant culture, making it a top pick for 2024.
Maui and Botswana were next, with Maui still recovering from fires and Botswana offering an increasingly accessible and affordable safari experience. However, the Swiss Alps and LA didn't make my list due to overhype and expense, with Norway shining as a serene, less crowded alternative for breathtaking landscapes.
Cambodia and Rome were discussed for their unique charms, but I leaned towards the often-overlooked Cambodia and Vietnam for a more adventurous Southeast Asian experience. Glacier National Park edged out Austin for its natural beauty and urgency due to climate change, while Paris and Bora Bora were discussed but I suggested Thailand for its value and luxury.
Finally, Paris and New Zealand's South Island were top picks, with Paris being highlighted for the Olympics and Notre Dame's reopening. However, my heart is set on Iceland as the ultimate destination, especially for its Northern Lights, which are entering an ideal viewing phase.
