In January 2024, Heather and I visited Byrsa Hill in Tunisia: ancient citadel of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and the Romans.
A short train or bus journey up the coast from Tunis is the ancient town of Carthage. Above the town, overlooking the Gulf of Tunis, is the impressive citadel of the Phoenicians, then the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Vandals.
Carthage was the capital of the Carthaginian empire, which battled the Roman Empire over many years. Read about the history of the Punic Wars if you want to learn more about ancient Carthage, the famous Carthaginian, General Hannibal, and its eventual defeat by the Roman Empire.
In 146 BC, Carthage and Byrsa Hill were conquered by the Roman general Scipio Africanus and his army.
Byrsa Hill is the site of the former Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Louis. The church building is no longer used as a place of worship and it is now a cultural venue, known as the Acropolium.
The site is the location of the National Museum of Carthage, which is open for tourists during the spring and summer months.
