Psykers in 40k are like mages on other fantasy but instead of having a mana bar they have an overheat bar. They are not the source of power but the pathway to channel the power of the warp. Use too much magic and the other fantasy mages can't cast more spell, but a 40k psyker will blow up if he tries to channel more power from the warp than he can handle.
this is pretty much how it works in Inquisitor: Martyr and Inquisitor: Prophecy, except instead of exploding, using too many psychic powers causes increasingly more powerful daemons to spawn in increasingly overwhelming amounts
@@zyklqrswx This sounds like a fun mechanic. Instead of running out of "mana", you technically have an infinite amount of it. But you'll take more risk the more you abuse it. Instead of having a hard barrier on how much magic you can channel, it's a soft limit , a trade off system that makes it dangerous or an acceptable risk depending on the situation and the skill of the user.
Though you can never know when exactly a psyker overloads from channeling their powers. Even with the best protections and precautions the Warp can represent a bomb that may blow up the second you activate it.
the more likely way up to be fair, magic essentially being reality warping it would take nearly infinite power to do any of it so it makes more sense that infinite is infinite and the limitation is needing a squishy mortal conduit to channel through. also leaves the spicy possible failure of actually putting infinite energy into reality on any given spot which would immediately explode into a new multiverse whilst obliterating the one it was inside of. so you know weakness can aid survival sometimes XD
it only occurred to me while watching this video that maybe the fenrisian method isn't too different from how eldar runes work, which would explain why the emperor was cool with it since it's safer

Because the Space Wolves (and other chapters) didn't explore and experiment within the warp to even a fraction of the degree the T.Sons did, Big E didn't bother arguing with Russ on the matter. @@locustofchiron Yeah, it was a purely political move that backfired immensely, also worth noting is that Lorgar and FUCKING EREBUS pushed this to ensure Magnus would be alienated and more vulnerable to corruption (which worked perfectly). The Thousand Son's were actually summoning Daemon's and the like, which is why the Emperor freaked out, but rather than explaining to them that Chaos was bad but Psykers were necessary, He went the extreme opposite and basically said "all Psykers are bad don't do anything, don't ask questions" which obviously didn't end well. It was extremely hypocritical with the Emperor being an uberpsyker and His favoured Legion's all using psychic powers anyway. Russ believed his Son's weren't doing anything like that, but Rune Priests are just Psykers with shamanistic connotations, which you would think the Emperor would hate given He censured Lorgar for being a wannabe choirboy!
Descriptions of sacrificing psykers in massive amounts of pain to the Golden Throne always give the impression that the Emperor is actually just another chaos god.
@@husarz5907 How many times has he ever spoken to anyone in the past 10,000 years since he became a rotting corpse on a Throne? How did the Imperium, which is supposed to be everything he DIDN'T want humanity to become, get so bad if the Emperor could reliably communicate with the Imperium?
i would just like to let you know that the fact that you're adding subtitles to these does NOT go unappreciated. I personally read better than i listen and it makes it a lot easier to enjoy your content. I know subtitling probably sucks, especially for longer content, so i appreciate it
The real world explanation for Psykers being in 40k, is because a lot science fiction of the 1940s-1960s dealt with "psionics". Psionics dealt with mind powers, such as telekinesis, psychic teleportation and shooting lightning from your fingers. Games Workshop creators (and George Lucas) more than likely got it from reading that era of science fiction as kids.
@raymondn4718 Good point, and I've checked those out too. I just think our boy is so much more succinct without sacrificing detail. So many 40k channels seem to repeat themselves or over explain ad nauseum.

My favorite psycher moment is during the novel “Devastation of Baal”. There is a moment a thunderhawk is flying through a massive ton of tyrannid airborne monsters. The blood angels’ librarian Mephiston activates his anime tier level powers and summons huge wings to take flight and body the entire swarm solo. I don’t know what category that falls into but def shows how ridiculous psychers can be.
dont forget that he stopped time, contemplated reviving a guy from the dead, then chose not to. the disciplines are just suggestions, ways of channeling the warp in a more controlled manner. if you know what you're doing you can go around them, but people who know what they're doing know the risks of doing so.
I started off listening to your scps, purely for the fact that you don't just read out what the article contains, you display it all in your way, and your voice is perfectly suited to your content. 40ks always been favourite setting of mine since the early 90s, with the books and lore being more fascinating than the rules and games. Found your 40k playlist and now it's been watched so much I fall asleep to it, usually around the tyrannid video. Thanks for all your hard work and creative content!

I'm equally excited when I see new 40k content from you as I am when you post new SCP videos pedantic sidenote, please forgive me but I believe going forward it'd be useful for you to know: a lot of imperial names for things end with suffixes like "-ite" and similar endings. it's generally understood that the "e" here is its own syllable and is usually pronounced as such - the obvious example being the Adeptus Astartes - usually pronounced "ah-STAR-tees" or "ah-STAR-tays". same goes for institutions like the Adeptus Arbites - "ar-BY-tees"/"ar-BEE-tees"/"AR-bi-tays" and of course the Navis Nobilite - "no-BI-li-tay". it's a pretty standard convention that is followed for one thing by most of the 40k audiobook narrators, so it can be useful to keep in mind in case you ever come across an imperial term you're not sure about again I love your work, thank you so much for everything you do and for keeping going after all this time. can't wait for the next one
In older Lore it was stated that the Necrons had somehow planted the genes that make some humans into Blanks (Souls with a Negative warp present) into ancient man, and were harvesting them, turning them into Pariah. I don't think this has even been directly contradicted, but Pariahs have stopped showing up.
New to 40k. After reading the talon of Horus and the black legion books as well as watching this video, I can say with certainty that Iskandar khayon is definitely a top teir psyker with all the power to use all forms of psyker specializations except divination. Buddy took on 5 grey knights after being ambushed by them and won with only a broken arm and a bloody nose. One of his favourite lines he say when he’s threatening people is “I will unmake you”
One thing to remember is that 40K was originally the Space version of the Warhammer Fantasy game, so psykers were the equivalent to Fantasy Wizards, and the 40K Psychic Phase and WFB Magic Phase were quite similar in the earlier editions - complete with Psykers/Wizards having "Levels" determining how many "spells" they knew. However, I disagree that Psykers are a lot more grim and dark than Fantasy magic - in WFB, mages tap into the Realm of Chaos (i.e. The Warp) for their power, and it can sometimes go quite wrong...WFB was definately a case of Dark Fantasy if you read into the lore a bit, and got past the colourful human warriors. 40k is too, to some extent - it seems closer to a Dark Future Fantasy than Science Fiction for me.
I'm pretty sure non-chaos mages in fantasy tap into the winds of magics, have their own wind of magic exclusive to them or use dhar soo unlike psykers they're less likely to get harassed by daemons meanwhile psykers directly tap into the raw warp itself
@@XD-sc4ix Yes, but the Winds of Magic are refractions of the energies that come from the broken portals in the Realm of Chaos. It also kinda helps that the Votex exists, helping dilute things. There's a reason the general symbol for magic is the 8-pointed star. But all that doesn't stop wizards from occasionally blowing up half of Altdorf.
@@notusneo More like refracted - kinda how you split a beam of light into a rainbow with a prism. That forms the basic eight winds of magic. Whilst human mages can only safely use one wind, Elves and others can utilise all the winds in various ways, resulting in High and Dark magic, and their variations, such as Necromancy. When I said diluted, its because the raw energy being spewed out by the Gates is being mostly siphoned off into the Great Vortex, thus preventing a mass spread of Chaos Energy across the world. Of course, not all of it gets siphoned away. if you want to learn more, have a look around the various lore sites - the ones I mainly use the WFB Lexicanum and the Warhammer Wiki. They're pretty good summaries of the various stuff that's been published over the years. And of course this only applies to the Old World setting - I haven't even tried to get into the Age of Sigmar stuff.
I am surprised you didn't mention Masters of Possession. These guys are able to banish the souls of enemy psykers and replace it with daemons, and they create Possessed and Daemon Engines
I doubt Big-E needs the sacrifices! Yes, they give him strenght alright, but if he ever needed them, he's way past that now (he's basically a warp-god by now, just his decaying body and the astronomicon keep him bound)...hell, as I said: I doubt he ever needed the, the Imperium just uses this as a convenient way to get rid of psykers they can't use (or that they don't want to use, because I doubt everybody they dispose of is actually an unstable maniac!)
A huge reason why the Emperor is able to continuously empower, bless and protect the Sanctioned Psykers of the Imperium is because of the endless supply of Psykers he drains of their empowered souls daily. That power continuously stacks. 10,000 years of fueling the Emperor has made him evermore feared by the Chaos Gods, who were afraid of him long before His ascension and gradual gaining in power. If he does attain a body capable of holding his powers, he will also be the only Entity within the Warp who can walk Realspace without assistance, as he was born of the Materium.
Interesting that the criteria of what constitutes a sanctioned physker has been expanded beyond navigators and astropaths even though by technicality the edict of Nicea was never repealed at least officially.
These five types of psykers overlap a lot with the psionic powers in D&D. Clairvoyance, Telepathy, Psychokinetics and Biomancy/Egoism are basically identical, the first couple not even being renamed, although D&D rolls Pyromancy into Kinetics while also allowing cold, electricity, and sonic force to be created equally easily by anyone who can make fire. Curiously absent from 40K, despite fitting in with the Warp arguably better than they do with the Astral Sea or whatever are the other two D&D varieties, Psychoportation to teleport across physical or dimensional distances, which was probably left out as a plot point to avoid trivializing starships and communication blackouts that contribute to the setting's grimdarkness, and Metacreativity, which manipulates astral matter to create objects or creatures (the equivalent of what a wizard would do by summoning these from another dimension). The latter is probably just omitted because it's "teh ghey" or something, but IMO it wouldn't be hard to headcanon it in, without messing up the setting...if anything, it might make more sense if the bright colorful Spess Mareen armor were summoner into being rather than created with actual paint.

You know what id love to see all the different Psykers dropped or teleported onto a planet made fight all the different factions all psykers going at it while I sit in low Orbit watching the fight on my large screen tv or some kind of 3d hologram of the fight now that would be so cool to watch
Can't be understated the phobos librarian and eliminators combo punches above it's points in tenth and the models are some of the best looking in the range.
Just a note, the whole "Ork weapon's are fueled by the WAAAGH" is very much community headcanon for the most part. Ork technology is actually functional, and is programmed into Mekboyz at a genetic level. At greater levels of WAAAGH, like what was seen at Ullanor and with the later War of the Beast, this is incredibly advanced technology, more advanced than anything but Necron or Aeldari technology in a way, and results in absolutely ridiculous constructs and weapons fuelled by the WAAGH energy itself. The WAAAGH Gestalt Field just sort of "lubricates" this technology and prevents things like critical overload in their reactors or allows a gun to keep firing without jamming despite despite being less than well maintained. The Orkz still have to have a functional technological basis for their equipment, they can't just pick up a stick then turn it into a gun through sheer belief (despite what is essentially community fan fiction regarding shooting Orkz with unloaded guns they believe to still have ammunition), but they can build guns basically anywhere out of pretty much metal and a few other components. The Jokaero are a reference for how the Orkz construct technology, as they were also likely designed by the Old One's with innate technological aptitude. Much of Ork technology does work if other races use it, it's just really nowhere near as consistent or useful as if an Ork was using it. An Astartes could use an Ork weapon, it just might backfire and explode instead of work properly! The Adeptus Mechanicus doesn't actually understand how some of their technology works at higher levels, it's more advanced than Imperial technology in many ways, and even though it looks ramshackle, Mekboyz are innately capable of making repairs to just about anything without even thinking about it. Some crazy stuff can happen with enough WAAAGH, but Orkz at lower levels of technology could not exactly rely on it because their WAAAGH is so much smaller (hence the lower level of technology) even if this was the case.
Remember kids, any Psyker, no matter how slight their gift, is a potential floodgate for the Warp to punch through into our reality with the risk of said event being unstoppable and uncontainable.
Keyword, potential. Not necessarily. And definetly not an excuse to sacrifice young children and elderly who managed to escape detection this far to an artificially sustained corpse on a throne.
One book mentioned a grey knight being susceptible to corruption due to having his wards taken away. He still didn't fall but knew that it was now possible.
which book? I was under the impression the grey knights were so stable was due to the selection process (daemonhost and all that), so that everyone who could fall was killed off early on...
@@FulloutPostal don't recall the name but it was one where two grey knights are captured and taken to the eye of terror to fight in the arenas of the blood god. With their armour and warding gone one says that falling to chaos is now physically possible. Neither do of course.
@@yaelz6043 the exact phrasing would be interesting, because both my impression and that statement aren't excluding each other, as in without the armour and warding, chaos can assault them, but they are still psychicly so strong they can withstand it...
@@yaelz6043 minor detail, but I'll amend my last response with "they can withstand it for a time" ;) my main point being that GK are "naturally" resistant to chaos, because the weak ones are weeded out waaaaay before they ever become fullfledged knights (I don't recall at what point exactly they must become a daemonhost, but iirc it's pretty early on, before they have all the implants or conditioning)
*Correction:* Astropaths arent sacrificed for the Astronomicon. They will, like navigators, utilize it, but in their case for more clearer (and relatively safer means) message sending/receiving. It is the Emperor who runs the Astronomicon, utilizes the thousands sacrifice to him (the "useless" psykers) for keeping it up

I do like the presentation that "The Exploring Series" does so I'm almost finding excuses to listen to these (but I enjoy 40K as well so that helps ;) ).
You know, i get that the imperium has countless trillions of people in it, and even 1/1,000,000 on psykers would still meet that quota of 1000 a day theoretically, but what happens if 3 ships just get Warp-f**ked or delayed by a couple months? Is there just a reserve stock of Psykers somewhere incase the shipment doesn't get in? 1000 (now 4000) is still quite a lot of a highly specific individuals every single day.
I would definitely be someone who hates Psykers in the 40k universe. Yet I’d still have some ridiculous story loophole that let’s me manifest some ability to resist or attack Psykers (that normally can’t be harmed by non-Psykers), but I still wouldn’t be a Psyker myself. I know that sounds very Mary Sue, but hey, there’s already several characters like that in 40k, so let me have my hate boner for puny spellcasters.

I draw my powers from my soul what is in a dimension what also represent a reflection of the universe and i can do all you can do but better and much more, and im not scared to use them even if i risk my soul to get clap for eternity and i can destroy a planet, whe are not the same.
