They'll probably have uses in space long before they're economical - for rockets such as the electron with its electric turbo-pumps? it'll mean greater payloads - after initial adoption? it'll probably be 3 years before they're cheap enough for mobile phones, powertools etc - probably another 2 years until they're cheap enough for an EV - so.. 2027? ish?

When will they come to market? That depends on the political climate and how much money the oil companies will pony up to suppress the technology. My guess is they'll pay a lot. Why oil companies don't jump on board by installing charging stations in ALL their gas stations is beyond me. Eventually they will go the way of Kodak.

Yup. This is a point many people don't get about adoption of new technologies. Take the hyperloop. Is it feasible to build a giant vacuum tube? Sure. But as someone who designs ultrahigh vacuum chambers, I can tell you that the electricity costs to maintain vacuum integrity (even if it's a relatively poor vacuum - say a tenth of 1 atm) is crazy expensive so it will never make economic sense.

Ever since i heard about the solid state batteries it really peaked my interest and seeing how car manufacturers are all trying to pivot to electric makes it that much more interesting. One massive issue i have with electric vehicles is the range anxiety which with a solid state battery with specs like that makes it seem less of an issue with only 10 or 15 minute charge times with even more range. One other massive issue is living in Ottawa Canada sometimes seeing possibly lower than -40°C makes it out of the range of the batteries

I'll believe these batteries when I see them. Coming up with something that works in the Laboratory is simple compared to making them cost effectively in enormous volumes. Even if they solve all of the technical issues, unless you can source vast volumes of raw materials, you're not in the game. By the time they even know for sure what materials they need, those are likely to have been allocated to other companies. I don't doubt that some of these batteries will be amazing and outperform anything we currently have. However, they are likely to remain expensive and largely irrelevant in the short to medium term since scaling production is so difficult with limited mineral resources.

Virtually no new car buyers keep their vehicle to end-of-life. They drive it a few years, then trade it in on the newest, shiniest thing. Rinse and repeat. There’s no reason to think that would change. Sure, that used BEV may persist in the used market longer than current ICE vehicles (but probably not), but new car buyers are going to remain new car buyers. Your reference to the promises of electric vehicles in theb1970s made me laugh. My town was constantly seeing on billboards and in print "new e car factory moving in!" but nothing came. It was always followed with "after the fold" sell off or bankruptcy. The people tried so hard, again and again.

Always find it interesting that the electric vehicle concept is 100yrs old (give or take) and that early (welcomingly simple) versions were operating in major cities during the peak/golden era of the electric trolley system! The major problem of course (among others) was the limited battery technology, which would not allow one to stray far from the overhead trolly wires and/or limited battery charging stations.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 3 года назад
@@__WJK__ even outside of trolleybuses, electric cars with lead acid batteries were the norm for about ten years prior to the model T’s introduction. People liked them because they were silent and they didn’t need cranked. They are often marketed as being suitable for a woman to drive on her own because many women hated cranking an engine even though men were by and large cool with it. (Though thankfully Karl Benz’ wife had no such compunctions! She was responsible for a lot of important innovations on his initial design when she took it for a ride.)

The thing with technology that breaks others is that there are so many bridges to cross, and most of the bridge builders are the oil industry or incumbent battery manufacturers. Why do you think Elon asked LG and Panasonic and others to build the 4860 battery for them, because if they had left them out there would have been huge claims and accusations of wrong doing from lobbyists. As time goes by Tesla will manufacture all their batteries and those for other ev manufacturers.

2035 is a good estimate. One issue is also that SS has to outperform current lithium batteries that are getting better all the time. The other issue is cost. Who cares if it's more energy dense if it costs 2 to 3 times as much.
@captainzoll3303
@captainzoll3303 3 года назад
@ᴡɪɴᴛᴇʀᴍᴜᴛᴇ _ as far as planned obsolescence, I think they may simply shrink the buffers for over/undercharging the batteries, to give them more usable charge in the short-term, but sacrificing long-term durability. this way they could also make the battery pack physically smaller for the same range, making it lighter and minimising material costs. let's just hope they don't make the control boards fry themselves, but more importantly, they don't exploit the lack of right-to-repair laws.
