you are right it is not a vulcanian eruption, either a piroclastic flow. It's a mild explosion with I belive pyroclastic material such as ash, lapilli and maibe blocks or bombs. I would not be surprise if this volcano produces andesitic to rhyolitic magma with intermediates level of SIO2 and strombolian eruptions
Absolutely fascinating, I look into the swirling and twirling hot dust cloud and let pareidolia work, this looks supernatural. I wish the video was much longer. Is it the same kind of explosive eruption that killed Pompei's inhabitants in their sleep?

This is an absolutely amazing volcano from a distance in southern Japan. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, constantly sending plumes of ash into the atmosphere, after constant eruptions. It's pretty erie to hear the shockwaves after the explosions. The pyroclastic flows that come down the flank of this volcano are devastating, and hopefully they do not hit the nearby town at anytime. It can be totally destructive. The villagers nearby, have lived among this incredible beast over the centuries, and have been through many explosions it has created. We would wonder if a big one is known to occur at anytime, and how long it would take for a proper evacuation to take place.
