Starting an orchestral composition in your DAW is challenging at best. Here's a way to divide in to the process of creating a highly realistic recording using Avid's Sibelius notation software, Apple's Logic Pro X, and Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra library.

This is exactly how we handled our project compositions in my Orchestration Class last semester. Great refresher and good points! Thank you. Your piece was awesome. Nice realism.

@@federicoverdicchio Im studying the Sound Arts and Music Composition at COC (College of the Canyons) in Valencia, CA under Prof. Greg Hosharian. This technique also helped me get my first recording deal with PARMA Recordings. Check them out!

Thank you. Could you also post how you a couple of examples of how you edited the tracks for BBCO to play them. Did you record manually the dynamics and keyswitches? How much time did it take?

Really useful video. I’m just wondering exactly how you add in the articulation and dynamics in Logic? I use different tracks depending on what articulation I use and so I’m just wondering if there is a more simplistic way to do this?

What does receive patch and articulation information mean? Does it mean re-enter every articulation you applied in Sibelius?

Is there any way to do this the other way around? I compose with Logic and BBCSO but whenever it imports as XML or MIDI it messes everything up, format and pitch included

great video! it really answers a question i had i mind. I am going to try. i do not have Sybelius. i have Musescore. i wonder if the part of erasing conmands attached to sybelius is aplyable exactly the same way to musescore...? thsnk you so much!!!

I'm having a problem when I import the midi it doesnt recognize the dynamics in bbcso so the sliders dont move at all is this normal.

Hi, there's something missing in your information. When you say it's ready to receive patch and articulation information and then you go back to Sibelius, where does this patch and articulation information come from? Can you help, I'd love to do this. Thanks, Rob.

I should have been more specific. Once the Sibelius-specific information has been cleared out, you manually add patch and articulation changes yourself in LogicPro. It takes a certain amount of editing - and patience - but it's worth it.

Dorico is better if you want notation software to use BBCSO because it's all in one DAW.
@georgetheta
@georgetheta 3 года назад
Can you explain this please? You mean that Dorico works smoothly with Cubase (cause they are both by Steinberg) or with any other DAW? "Its all in one DAW" means that when you choose "score" template in Cubase it opens Dorico directly? Your DAW can read Dorico's midi controller messages? Thanks!

Great tutorial. I pretty much use the same approach. Initially, I tried to play back in Sibelius using my BBC SO library. After spending 2 days tweaking every parameter that could influence playback (buffer size, etc.) I gave up. I can't get Sibelius to play back the BBC SO instruments without stuttering, clicks, etc. Even when using only 1 or 2 instruments at a time. Seems that Sibelius and BBC SO just don't go along. I asked Spitfire but they just say that their libraries are not designed for notation programs. There is a workaround which I used to get BBC SO instruments into Sibelius but they just don't play back smoothly. withPlayback with Note Performer works fine, using 12 instruments simultaneously. I wonder if anybody could comment on similar problems and if anyone has achieved smooth playback with Sibelius and BBC SO.

"... their libraries are not designed for notation programs" Such a disappointing answer...

I think your workaround is the way to go Sibelius, noteoerforfner, Playback, BBC so

@@JuanMariaSolare Well, that was 3 years ago. I have since switched to Dorico. Excellent playback via NotePerformer and Playback Engine driving BBCSO sample library. Sounds very natural and follows the articulations in the score well with very few adjustments needed. I wonder if anyone is still using Sibelius now that we have Dorico 5 combined with NP playback?!
