Everything you ever wanted to know about exporting .stl files from Autodesk Fusion 360 but were afraid to ask!
Saving off a single body for 3D Printing is fairly straight forward in Fusion 360 however you can do a lot more, including adjust your file quality, save whole groups of parts as one file and even separate groups into their own distinct stl files for dual color prints.
Fusion 360 can be found here and is free to use for Education or by Startups - www.autodesk.co...
My .stl viewer and editor of choice is Meshmixer, available here - meshmixer.com/

4 + years later and this video is still useful. Trying to figure out how to export all the parts of an assembly in their orientations and it's just choose the top level component and export that. Jeez, so easy and yet I wouldn't have found it. Thank you again - I normally don't find videos this old to be useful anymore, but this one delivered.

God bless you for making this video. I was pulling my hair out because separate bodies were coming out in the stl even when I had them hidden and I could not figure out how to unselect one without deselecting the part I actually wanted to print. Also, you're the reason I tried Fusion360 out and I LOVE IT. BEST PROGRAM EVER. this difficulty exporting bodies to stl that were referencing each other has been my only road block so far and it's incredibly easy to use & powerful. Thank you again Angus

Great vid Angus! Pro tip on Fusion (that you probably already know): always create a component first, then activate it, then create your bodies. This helps scope your feature timeline and control the origin of parts. Granted, it's not required nor make a large difference in this example, but building good habits now save frustration later.

ATTENTION TO EVERYONE FOR WHOM IT STILL SHOWS UP AS SEPARATE BODIES INSIDE CURA: 1) In Fusion, select all the bodies 2) In Modify menu, click Combine 3) Operation dropdown should say "Join" 4) Check "New Component" and "Keep Tools" 5) Right click the new component and do Save as Mesh

A trap for new players is the default .3mf file format for meshes. If you are exporting multiple bodies as a single file, if you accept this file format for the export you will find that in your slicer (at least in Cura) they become separate bodies, which is not helpful for things like print in place joints. However, if you change the file format to .stl they will import into your slicer as a single entity. I wasted several hours today trying to figure this out and eventually turned to this tutorial, which prompted me to think about whether file format would make a difference. So thanks again Angus for your great videos.

Good video. Other than starting off with components (most of the time), my new habit I'm trying to develop is using good naming of at least bodies/sketches. For me it helps with history and processing (exporting, copying, etc.) Thanks for the Tutorial, well done! Look forward to the next one.

cool, as others have stated start with a new component and make sure it's check then all parts associate well.. also.. a minor thing but you can make your Z axis up/down instead of left right in the pref's so the file is oriented for printers.. not a big deal but it helps with some complicated models with multiple bodies/components sometimes.
@jfiorini
@jfiorini 7 лет назад
Great tutorial Angus! Hey, I've been using an easier method for your final "multiple bodies" method. Instead of creating components, you can hide the bodies you DON'T want to export, and instead of right clicking on a body, right click on the top node of the same tree on the left and choose Save As STL. It will save just the visible bodies instead of all of them. I haven't used grouping yet, but I'd assume you can then hide/show certain bodies as groups, which would make this process even easier.

STL is old as the hills!! Angus why not do a video on what the STL format needs to be for it to be a modern format for 3d printing. One thing is to have embedded in the file whether it is metric or english and also keep its scale. Maybe it is tied into the STEP format.

Angus, Fusion 360 Rule Number 1 is first create and activate a component!
@MakersMuse
@MakersMuse 7 лет назад
I'm not sure I follow, components are for assemblies, why create one straight away? I model till the part is done as a body.
@bigfilsing
@bigfilsing 7 лет назад
unlike Inventor and Sometimesworks everything is in a single "design" in Fusion. By making a component ( from the start) or from a body, all the associated actions.sketches etc & files ( templates decals/ canvas) are part of the component and don't end up all thrown together under the "design" Important when you have multiple components in a design. When you activate any part in the design you are dealing with just its history and not the whole design.
@MakersMuse
@MakersMuse 7 лет назад
+bigfilsing ah that's a very good point. I've only really done designs with very interdependent parts so a single tree worked fine, but that will make the bigger assemblies a lot easier to manage.
@bigfilsing
@bigfilsing 7 лет назад
It also effects other processes later if you get into the CNC area of fusion . Without parts defined as components all kinds of things go wrong when trying to generate CNC tool paths. Nice to see you getting to grips with Fusion. Coming from Inventor i hated it to start with but am slowly coming round. Cheers
@MakersMuse

+bigfilsing I'll admit it's a big change from solid works, but worth sticking with especially for the mesh features for me.

THANK YOU ANGUS!!! (Another super helpful video!) - This is the 1st time I have used Fusion 360 & its been a mission achieving what I want! I used your last method (as I had over 140 Bodies!) & It worked. Thank you!! > I tried to scale as accurately as possible on fusion (Expected Length: 256.58mm) but when the STL is imported into CURA I get 265.62mm. Should it maintain the exact dimensions or do I need to adjust these in CURA?? Thanks to anyone who can help confirm!
@MakersMuse
@MakersMuse 2 года назад
It should be exact or wildly off, which would indicate an incorrect inch to mm conversion. Cura will show the bounding box dimensions in XYZ so if it's at any kind of an angle that might account for the variation :)

I'm having trouble with Cura accepting the common origin (at least in Z) -- or it's automatically dropping both elements to build plate. I have a fairly simple model that is essentially a cube bisected by an oblique plane. The lower half has drainage channels in its upper surface and I want to print that half solid and the upper half I want to print infill only with no top or bottom but with outer walls. I've tried every combination of exporting and importing, de-selected the Cura option to automatically drop to build plate, etc. and it keeps dropping them both to the build plate. If they don't align perfectly, they will not print correctly.

Hey Angus, you might have answered this question but I haven't come across that video as of yet, I was wondering which Slicer program would you recommend for a beginner, and which for more in-depth use? I don't have a 3d printer yet as I'd rather learn the techniques beforehand and have some prior experience. I also usually use SolidWorks, is it good enough as a model builder? Love your videos, Thanks!

Hey! Solidworks is perfect, I learnt it in Uni and if it wasn't so expensive I would be using it too. I use Simplify3D but it isn't free. Maybe take a look at the latest version of Slic3r, it offers a tonne of options to look at and g-code preview, but lacks customisable support structures sadly.

But i dont want the internals to be saved into the .stl files otherwise the slicer will want to print those bodies as well even though they are hidden inside the object. This will increase print time drastically and also material use.So is there any way I can save multiple bodies of an object only into one solid or only as a shell?

Angus, Thanks for your video! I'm new to Fusion 360 and was having difficulty trying to figure out how to export a component as an STL file. I have a question for you. It appears that Fusion 360 will allow me to select a component name, right click, and export as an STL file. In other words I don't have to select the "Body" to do this function even for components that I made that have multiple bodies. I can select their component names, instead of their "Body" and export as STL files. I haven't tried to print any of these STL files yet using this method so, I don't know if this works. I assume it will. So, is this an update of Fusion 360 that now allows you to select the component name to export as an STL file? I have another question. Is there a way to export components as a" DXF" file using Fusion 360? Thanks, in advance, for your help! Gary

Help!! Using fusion360 I created a sketch and it has 4 bodies which I put into a compnent. I then sent to slicer. All 4 comes into slicer, but when I go to slice I lose one of the bodies. I tried grouping the 4 bodies inside the component. I've tried selecting the component, I've tried selecting the group of bodies and I tried selecting the 4 bodies. In each case I lose the same body. Can't figure out how to correct so that I get all 4 bodies in the slice.

Makers Muse released an EBook guide in 2016 specifically for this. He says that buying a 3D printer relies on a lot of things (heated bed for ABS, dimensions), and that it's still relevant. I don't know anything, and i'm really just repeating what he said, but from this channel, I would say that's where to go next. Even if the guide doesn't prove useful, it's not much money and I THINK it recently went on sale.
