spiccypeaches Filipinos need to go back and embrace their original culture. Stop reverting back and referencing parts of Spanish or American culture and embrace themselves. One of the reasons why I liked Catriona so much was that she invested in textiles clothing, traditions of the original Austronesian and Malay people of the Philippines. Actually showcasing the UNIQUE parts of the Philippines like the rest of Asia does
If I will speak for myself 1800s-1900s Filipino(Filipina) fashion really has this old-classy yet elegant vibe that you won't and cannot be find in Asia. I mean unique *OMG I can't believe I got a thousand likes lol. Well I think many people agreed on me though.
Ehh. Japan, Korea, China, India, and many others would like to disagree. But that's your opinion. If elegant and classy meant western looking, then you're right.
Even if Spain and America didn't invade us our culture will always change. And besides we would be the only ones left out wearing our traditional clothes while the rest of the world is being modernized if we didn't go with the flow of modernism
@@rbsalapantan3887 False. The Cordillera region and some parts of Mindanao weren't invaded and was able to maintain the culture and their historical identity until now along with modernization. Look at the "culture" of most Filipinos now. If they're not doing something that is "uso", they feel left out. They are defining their identity based on something that "flows" while our indigenous people are proud of what they have become from centuries of evolution in their culture. Don't fix what is not broken.
EV0 X Why do you mean lost culture, our generation will always change. And even if haven't colonize by western we will still change. Modernization changes percept of what were living today.
Jun Angelo Jimenez CASILANG I have to agree with EV0 we technically lost our cultural identity or at least our past cultural identity. Not saying modernization is bad cause those clothes from before the 1800 are just a big fat no for me. Modernization has done some crappy things though ngl and some “traditional” practices and lifestyles all over the world that have an actual and sensible purpose are being forgotten. Theres gotta be a balance for this sort of thing cause I wish I was raised doing asian squats (I can’t anymore since I was a baby) but I will not give up modern medicine cause thats just stupid. This is just my take on it at least. Edit: cultures do modernize and evolve overtime on their own but colonization and stuff made everything take a huge turn whether good or bad is up to the person.
Wala pa din masyadong convenience stores, and people are into walking. HAHAGA
Kaslanan ng Spanish to.. ayoko na maging Catholic isang napakamaskasalanang nangyare sa pinas.. dapat we do what god has given us.. pero binulag tayo ng walang yang mga espanyol at amerikano
Why blame Christianity though? I have Christian friends who have tattoos. There are just some narrow-minded, legalistic people who think it is bad. But you must also take note that in the ancient times, only slaves have tattoos. May be that is where the "bad" reputation came from.
I wouldn't say the Americans only, The Japanese and Spanish took many of such cultures away, although Spanish colonisation could be an exception to the taking away of culture because they helped modernise the country but they still changed the country and the Philippines never became a tropical, economically low, and rural country it once was. Thus Americans, Spanish, and Japanese changed the Philippines, the better or worse. It was because the Americans was such a successful country that we followed them and they took the Philippines under their wing and did the best they can to improve our country and modernise it. Also I would not say the Americans took the essence of being filipino away but more like fused the cultures together. We may have the Spanish Siesta, Japanese terms in language, American style of clothing and actions, but we still have Filipino food, traditional clothes (ex. Barong Tagalog), and way of life (ex. Hospitality, respect for the elderly). Yes, the Americans, Spanish, Japanese changed the way we think, act or, do things but those changes fused with the essence of the past is what makes us the filipino the world knows us by. -I am not against your comment or ideals in any way but telling you my opinion, I am a fellow filipino born and living in central Visayas and I hope that none of what I said offended you in any way. :)
CA ÑE DO EVERYTHING yaaa but now america is just using us thats why i hate americans we been friends for them for so long but they did not give us good army material they only give the broken gun and no submarine good for russia offering us submarine and south korea too
@@kyczxoiya2520 Yes I cant go against that, that is why Duterte is stopping many programs such as the American-Philippine Tropical training which Americans need for tropical training, also this country is too dependant and we need to fend for ourselves, also those bad weapons they give us are weapons they dont use anymore so it would be sensible that they give it to us, a country that still finds potential in it. We also need to learn to be more dependant like those of India who's country is also poor but is independent to the point they can build subs and planes for themselves. But I agree, America is still using us.
I've been to many countries to many Filipino gatherings, I often had to wear the barong. Find a Filipino organization, pretty sure they have fundraisers, dances, scholarships and fashion competition and more often than not they will have a bestida or barong competition.
True i wanted to wear the dresses from our countries eras 1800-1920 and have a barong tagalog . One i own and maybe the next going to make my own inspired look on formals like black ties
Kalobeast 55 agreed, but as a person living in the provinces some of us still practice our native traditions and we should teach the newer generation of who they are. It’s sad over shadowed by Korean and Japanese cultures. A lot of the folks in Manila have sold us out, and just don’t care
i feel like we try to be westernized because we grew up thinking anything from america is better or of higher quality when really our precolonial fashion, music, and dance has so much more uniqueness and individuality. while there is nothing wrong with embracing different cultres, it's important to hold on to our roots that make us unique
@@rivallo251 its because their clothing were made of natural fibers such as cotton and linens, most of the clothes we wear today are synsthetics which means we're litterally wearing plastic
Mestiza yung great great grandmother mo, sa palagay ko isang Peninsulares ang pamilya nyu dati 😁... ang ganda nya, I wonder madami sigurong nahumaling sa kanya dati 😁
I love this video! As a Filipina born and raised in the USA, it's nice to see that we have a sense of fashion since the beginning of time. Also, love the dance evolved over time. I noticed from the 70s to 00s, the dances were influenced by American Pop Culture, From 2010s onward, the dances will most likely be influenced by Korean Pop Culture. Yet, you all still keep the Filipino traditions in those dances. My two cents.
EXACTLY MY POINT! At first alam kong fashion ang tema ng pinapanood ko, and then nung huli nagiba sa pakiramdam.
Actually our identity is really diversed. So before spanish colonization came we really don't have our own identity because there is no philippines. Only kingdoms and tribes each region has their own one so without unification by spaniards we don't have our own identity due to differences in dialects, language, tribes and kingdoms. Kingdom of tagalogs, visaya etc. No Filipinos nor Pilipinas 😃
Ashier L hard factsss... either way the ph will be colonized by some country eventually if spain has not came just like how the rest of the south east asia
I’ve been wanting to learn Philippine history but didn’t know where to start because it’s so overwhelming. Thank you so much 😭 Namiss ko tuloy history subject ko nung grade 8
When I finished reading "I love you since 1892", I wanted to wore dresses more often... We used to conservative and patient, but now, youth destroy the real image of what is truly like to be a Pilipino.
it’s not youth, change is inevitable. there was very little control over what influences current pop culture, and tradition was just not incorporated throughout these changes.
its called evolution. we cant stay the same forever. as what the comment above me said, change is inevitable. why not just embrace the generation youre currently in and not dwell on the past. the past is unchangeable anyway. and its not all good either. just be thankful youre in a generation where you can communicate with anyone easily even if theyre far away and have more freedom than any of our ancestors before. whats even the use of attacking other people's choice of clothing lmao.
A true-blooded Filipino is someone who cherishes the ancient heritage but more importantly someone who embodies the great core values and beliefs of being a Filipino. Culture can change in so many ways depending on so many factors but what is essential is that no matter where we are in the world, we are proud to call ourselves Filipino/Pinoy and show to others the wisdom and skills that our ancestors have bestowed upon us.
Phil’s are really beautiful people no matter what they wear, looks like from the oldest pictures a woven fabric loincloth and tattoos where pretty much the actual traditional cultural dress, considering the heat in PP that makes a lot of sense. I wonder what kind of cloth fabric that was, what it was made from, like was it silk or something else? Because probably not cotton or linen, who knows, I’m sure there is a way to find out through historical references though, I can imagine some pretty beautiful Lycra skin tight catsuit with the traditional tattoos printed on it so that wearer can be modest but also wear the traditional style textile pants or skirts. I’d like to see more of what the women wore prior to international contact. I can imagine a truely traditional indigenous prom dresses from around the world, which would blow the minds of the other cultures and be a lot of fun. I think a lot of cultures had like English religions of Christianity come and basically set new rules of modesty and dress, which unfortunately caused a loss of connection to very ancient textile art and craft methods sadly. I know for my own culture which is Gael Scot, we were banned for over a hundred years by the English over rulers from wearing our traditional tartans and kilts etc. I get tired of hearing about how it’s white ppl who ruined the world. Well there were once indigenous folk from countries who were white too and they also experienced the same cultural decimation by the Romans and the English. But there no point blaming now, no one alive today to blame. Better to move forward and think about how to incorporate traditional culture and ancestor respect into modern life, to show they didn’t really win, fashion today is so mixed and wonderfully diverse you can wear anything almost anytime except in the most formal of situations and it’s perfectly acceptable in much of the world. All winter long I wear my family’s traditional wooden clan tartan as a scarf and I hope to obtain traditional wooden fabric to one day sew and make my own family tartan kilt skirts to always wear it every day, but it is expensive and hard to source now as it is bespoke handmade weaving or woven on very very old weaving looms which are not automated and it is labour intensive fabric, I also live in a climate which doesn’t really suit wool all year round. I guess I have to be creative and adapt in order to carry on my culture.
I enjoy watching these kind of videos, it's just like time travel, taking you back in time, seeing these elegant and classy people just make my heart warm.
I disagree.
I think FASHION is not the best titile for this video, it can be call as a Music , Dance and Cultural transformations for 400 years in the Philippines.
It's not that hot in Philippines before, because philippines is free from air pollution, but today's generation is very hot so yeah it's hot when we will wear that
Thank you RU-vid Recommendation, I am speechless from watching this, the video is smooth and beautiful, I love the fashion during the 19th-20th century, just the elegance, culture and identity us Filipinos and I don’t really know what to say but beautiful video!
As a filipina, it seems as if we’re a tropical version of america nowadays because ever since then we’ve just been adapting to different cultures after being colonized and all that its kinda sad.. The only values we have left are the “po” and “opo” and the “pag-mamano” I wont even be surprised if the future generations of filipinos lose that value aswell
It's completely fine to adapt to some changes regarding fashion, music, beliefs, and such. A willing person may able to express himself or herself without degrading Filipino culture or his/her identity as a part of it 🦋
And identity is not only in clothing. Even if we speak English and consume Western ideas, we're still living out every day our identities as Filipinos.
I just wish that my generation would wear barong and baro't saya not just in formal wear but also in casual. I think that it will really go well with modern fashion.
Yes we are influenced by many countries and kuha ko naman po ang sinabi mo.

I keep saying this to people I have discussions with about the Filipino culture...the Filipinos try so hard to look and act like foreigners (Korean look in today's generation) and proudly showcase that to the world. Now that everyone has embraced foreign cultures, the question is, who's going to be the Filipino people?
@@sy-zu4uz I agree. I believe that is due to morenas doing quite well on international pageants. Good, but as you said, a very slow one at that. Sadly, the Korean look is strong amongst the youth. What a sad state the Philippines is in.
How I wish Filipinos still wear their traditional clothing as if it were norm like in Japan. The Traje De Mestiza looks really good! Has a very unique vibe to it because it looks western and not Asian at all! But, I do understand why they don't use it much often - It's very hot😂 not ideal for a hot climate. I can say that because I wore my grand mother's terno and it is REALLY hot😂
I love ur video, i love how we evolved in terms of our clothing and music and dance, its like a tour from the past to present. For my future wedding, i love the 1930's theme.
Im a 2000's liner but i still get nostalgic seeing 1900‐80's clothes and dramas.. i remember my grandparents telling me stories about the trends back then especially the dances
considering how unique filipino history is, i find it crazy how despite western influences and all as a byproduct of colonization, many influences in pop during the 1990s and 2000s look so much like the first generation of kpop. seo tae ji and boys basically brought western hip-hop influences, yet filipinos have been doing it for longer. and yet, we don't get the same magnitude of attention as kpop or east asian media...
That kind of fashion trend has always existed since pre-colonial times in different places in the Philippines.
Pinya clothe and textile ang go to noon pre ww2 , superb airflow since mesh lang sya... now adays pinya textile per yard cost a fortune vs conventional textiles
Everyone, pls remember, that we can't erase our culture, we can't purge all our "unasian" parts of our culture, we shouldn't. It's a part of our culture and we should accept that, it's akin to erasing ourselves, we should never discrimate people based on their ethnicity or color, or accent. we should be proud of our culture and strive to improve our culture, we should gladly accept that we are southeast asian and no other, we are not pacific islanders, not latinos, not spaniards, not even a slave! We are asian! We should strive to improve our country and bring it, to a better tomorrow! Now, then, let's unite!
It's honestly crazy to see how strong the Spanish Colonial impact stayed with Filipino's even during the Japanese colonization/American colonization. I personally love the Spanish colonial fashion up to the 1960s American fashion. After the 60s, I just don't fw fashion. As a half Filipino, whenever I wear my barong, it's important to me to understand what took place that lead me to proudly wear my traditional Filipino outfit.
As a Flippino/American I love all the essence of all the different heritages we inherited from all of all the different colonizations. The Philippines is a mixture of everything beautiful. 😊🙏🏻❤️🇵🇭🇺🇸
Nakahiligan ko ang street fashion 1980s, 90s and early 2000s.
Although I'm just 18 (this 2020), this video gives me nostalgic feelings. It feels like I'm being brought back to the old good times... I'm glad that the time when I was growing up, the Filipino vibes are still there. (Like outside games are being plaued by children before -- Luksong tinik, chinese garter, tumbang preso, patintero, agawan moro, atbp.-- and the streets are packed with joyful sweaty children.) Until drastic changes happen and it feels less Filipino now. Idk why.
I never even knew we had anything traditional. I feel so disappointed that we lost our culture. Like wow I wanna wear those but I don't even know if any filipinos know it
Most Filipinos wear them during Independence day, Filipinong Wika, weddings or graduations. I'm pretty sure Filipinos born in the country knows what they are
Filipiniana has a Spanish influence in it, at sa ngayon iyon ang tinataguriang pambansang damit natin. Since others here spouting about "We lost our identity because of the colonizers", why don't we Filipinos, unite as one and embrace our culture more. Because past is past and you can't change it and, the fact that Filipinos has been influenced not only by Spanish and the US, but also by Chinese, Arabs and Indians. Why not embrace it and eventually make a culture that what we can call our OWN.
Simpleng pamumuhay noon, napakagandang balikan.
we would’ve had our own language symbols and our language would sound completely different,we would have tribal tattoos and more..thanks spain..and all the other countries that decided to invade a whole country..
Mas nagiging diverse and inclusive na kase ang beauty standard ngayon compare noon(during spanish colonization) na white skinned, tall, misteza/mistizo lang ang cinoconsider na maganda. So mas better ngayon.
