A similar issue just happened a few months ago with 91 serial numbered cards on Topps Project 70. The DJ SKee card to Kirby Pucket had a companion card. (Companion cards are usually distributed at random to anyone who purchases an artist card via mail.) For some reason DJ Skee wanted to hand out cards in person at a stadium and he did. He handed out 91 serial numbered companion cards. Topps reprinted the same 91 serial numbered chase cards and mailed them out. When Topps caught the mistake they sent everyone who received a chase card by mail an offer for $100 store credit if they returned the card. The chase card is worth much more on the secondary market. I doubt very many people opted to return the chase cards. Now there an unknown number of duplicate serial numbered chase cards out in the wild.

I’m confused. So did Panini make 2 of the same cards? If so, couldn’t this be a lawsuit against Panini? Also, is Dak Prescott at fault for not actually signing the cards and having a machine sign? If this is the case, then we shouldn’t waste our money on such expensive cards.

Awesome to hear this story. although the auto pin may not be a real signature, I still think it holds value or even goes up in value over the next couple of years. Just the whole backstory of the card + the rarity of it. Imagine this happend when Jordan was a rookie or someone of that stature. The card would be worth hundreds of thousands today. I also think that if they do figure out that it’s not the real signature, that they still slab it and mark it as the infamous dak controversy card. Would be really cool to see that in the market

This is why I will never waste my money on cards ever again, The 80's was bad enough with over production. I wasted my hard earned money and the stuff is garbage. Throw PSA in there and what they charge to grade a card and its a joke and card collecting was never to be like it is today. It's all about the cash for these card companies. HUGE scam

This is not the first time this has happened. Topps also had similar issues with refractors,xfractors,superfractors etc in baseball from 2006-2010 a lot traveled out the back door some with serial # others without. The card companies are at the mercy of card manufacturers that are subcontracted to manufacturer cards. Cards have for years seen this issue with uncut sheets,proofs etc when $$$ are involved and people see an opportunity to exploit cards that were meant to be destroyed they feel “ahhh no harm these were going to the garbage anyways let me make a few $$$ on these no one will know.” This again is not the first time or the last time it will happen I own at least 500 + refractors that should have never seen the light of day but they sit in my hoard of refractors I collect. So unless you can watch from begging to end of manufacturing and that’s just not possible we’re all left with buyer beware when your paying big money 💰 for a card you thought was truly limited.

I had a Triston McKenzie 2019 Bowman "Ready for the Show" in red. Looking on Ebay found the exact serial numbered card. Was it Asia? Scam? Who would scam a $50 card? Alot of people will have some empty pockets when they go to sell these fakes.

The whole time, I was thinking what Geoff was thinking... If I had one of those, I'd be trying to buy the other guy out and own the pair.

I really thought he was gonna make them an offer to buy both. They're easily worth more because the controversy behind them and honestly the fake auto card could technically be a 1/1 making it extremely valuable when paired with the real auto

Card Henry has without the sticker on the back was backdoored from Panini like the purple scope's /99 and base silver before they were signed by Dak for panini which is way you see some base silvers and purple scopes on ebay unsigned. Some of those backdoored cards have been signed by Dak at either a private signing or in person, basically the same thing. I've been a collector since 2010 and was joining break in 2016 left and right and being a cowboys fan. I was chasing Dak & Zeke and followed the prizm things since day one back then. One person had all of the unsigned cards from Panini that were backdoored and all 5 of the gold Vinyl autos /5....fishy!!!!!

I owned the sgc one for a bit. It’s definitely not autopen. The person I purchased it from had dak sign it in person.

What if these duplications of serial numbered cards are uncovered in more instances ? A one off instance creates an incredible story. More instances will throw huge doubts about quality control and damage the hobby irreparably.

I think that the story makes the cards, and they really only have "more" value if they are sold and and kept together.

This was a huge story in the hobby his rookie year, only for the Luka auto controversy to hit a couple years later. It’s going to continue to happen if reps don’t sit with the athletes when they sign

Let's just say ( made up name ) kenny , is a worker at panini, and lets say kenny gets a hold of tiger print, and zebra print cards of $$$ players! no serial numbers, but cards that are supposed SSP! And wants to make a quick buck, on the side! No one will know, these cards are supposed to be super short print!! I gurantee that this kind of mischief goes on, all the time!! You never know, who knows!! 🤷‍♂️

I purchased 2 Dak Prescott rookie autos one being Championship Ticket 1/2 and Immaculate RPA 2/2 both sealed by panini but I cant find anything online regarding these cards numbered to 2.

Dak without the Panini Authentic sticker is prob not worth buying or holding if not paired with the other Panini Authenticated one. If Manufacturer says it's not authentic and it was signed by some machine, how can Beckett authenticating it be anything less than fraud? Panini says Dak didn't personally sign it than he didn't sign it.

Panini is just a horrible company, no quality control. We see many different stories of “mistakes” that panini has made, and their half-assed excuses every time. The auto pen should have never happened in the first place. I am thrilled that Panini lost the nfl and nba licenses

$250,000.00 for Both . It makes sense that the manufacturer have dub’s of auto”s and # card do to Q/T so it can be replaced But someone had there hand in the cookie jar . Not the frist time for this !

Could it be that someone got there hands on one of the unsigned versions of the gold card and ended up getting dak to sign it in person. That would make the most sense to me.

I didn’t know if it was a joke when I saw the guys face blurred or not at first. But so gross they used auto pen. Such a scam. Dak and whoever should get charged with fraud.

That’s sad that dak Prescott did that all you have to sign is 10 cards that’s not a lot and that doesn’t take that much time out of your time to just sign 10 cards it’s not that much

I dont understand why he didn't make an offer on both cards. Separately there will always be concern if you are buying the real one or not. But as a pair it is legendary.

This is a good example of why I don't spend money on cardboard.

Any time I get a rookie auto or number card that people don't really know of, I Google the. And to try and buy as many as I can for a a dollar or 2 and see doubles of my cards... literally all the time.

This is nothing new. Reminds me of the 95-96 topps finest hockey jagr story where the guy bought every one that was made, then more kept popping up and he sued them. And a lot of these bigger cards come straight from the factory not from packs. Those kaboom sets, autograph sets, etc etc aren’t pulled from packs and assembled they come direct from factory. When 96 topps finest baseball came out, the gold refractors were so hard to pull and two weeks after the product came out I saw a guy had and entire set of psa 10s of the gold refractors and he told me we get all the high end sets right from the factory! The game is always rigged

Why wouldn't panini verify that they got for example the autopen #5 before sending out the new #5?

I've heard stories of players having family members sign the cards for them because the sticker sheets get so overwhelming to fill... are you really getting the player auto???

I have to ask, Did you offer to buy the pair for your collection?

And Panini sells their junk hobby boxes for ridiculous prices. Their quality control is horrible. Investing in football cards are a high enough risk by itself already as it is.
