Pennzoil and Quaker State make motor oils that are the same viscosity, the same specification, and they are made in the same plant. Could they actually be the same oil?
We analyzed a bottle of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Synthetic and Quaker State 5W-30 Synthetic to find out. Watch as Certified Lubrication Specialist, Lake Speed Jr, reveals the findings. The results are quite interesting...

-My thoughts on oil and related topics : -My favorite oil is the cheapest often Costco supertech or Amazon. - I like Penzoil ultra platinum, but only when it’s on sale - Wix filters always. -I’ve found that using a fumoto drainvalve and changing the oil early works wonders if you’re looking to own a car long term like 200k miles -4k-5k in mileage is the sweet spot for changing oil within 6 months
@Good-luck-Jonathan

Warren distribution stuff is low and group 3 and you’ll get more metals than Pennzoil platinum ultra, which is one of the best off shelf oils. 200,000 miles no problem with the Warren oil and wicks filter. If you want to go to 400,000 miles better use platinum ultra and Fram ultra or Amsoil filters. In some engines certain Amsoil oils perform better than platinum ultra, but you need to do analysis trending if that is the case with your application.

It's very obvious to many of us that you're speaking the truth based on science. So I think we would all love to see an episode, or more, on the history of motor oil I first became interested in motor oils when I bought my first brand new motorcycle in 1986. I wondered why there were car motor oils and motorcycle motor oils and wondered if I could run the cheaper of the two in my bike. I was also told at the time to not run synthetic oil in my bike because it would make the seals shrink causing oil leaks. Low and behold, against that original piece of advice, I did and actually started to see some oil seeping out of some seals which immediately made me switch back to conventional oil. That told me at the time there were significant differences in certain types of oils, but I'm also now aware that the additives are just as important, if not more, than what the base oil is made from. I'm so glad I found this channel and hope to get all of my questions answered over time as I watch future and past episodes. Thank you!

IN the mid 1970's Smokey wrote about and tested a synthetic oil called All proof 5w-50. The article was in Popular Science magazine. He built a mild 302 Chevy and gained 20 hp and lowered oil temp by about 15 degrees. Went back to mineral oil and lost the 20 hp. He pulled the heads between tests and checked the valves etc. I called Smokey and ordered enough oil for 2 302 Ford boat engines. My gains were similar to his. I was thrilled with the results and thrilled to speak with Smokey. When i called back to reorder for another oil change he informed me that the chemist died and his son changed the formula and he didn't like it. The oil came out of Superior, Wisconsin. Recently i read that the product became part of Royal Purple.I currently use Mobil 1 15w-50 in BBC marine engines and some hiper Chevy small block boat engines that don't always have oil coolers like the BBC. The Mobil 1 15w-50 was first marketed about 1986. Always looking for the " perfect" motor oil😂 Your information adds another level of understanding, Thanks

I changed the oil in my wife's car for years. It was only when I did the first change using Royal Purple with Synerlec (not the API certified oil) she came back and asked what did I do to the car. She said it drove better, quieter and engine felt stronger. She thought I did some kind of tune to the engine. I told her all I did was an oil change. That experience sold me on RP and I used that in my own car and the engine did feel stronger.

@garyszewc3339 It's the "random" part that loses credibility. One needs to read what they write then determine "does it pass the 'smell test"" and does it add up? Performance beats credentials every time. Having credentials, passing the "smell test" and "speaking the truth" are the marks of a true professional.

It’s good to hear you emphatically state IT’S NOT THE BRAND THAT MATTERS it’s WHAT’S IN THE BRAND. Too many car guys love to bluster on about what they always relied on “back in the day” because they had X number of cars run 250,000 miles without a hiccup using “good ol’ reliable ____”. I grew up loyal to conventional Quaker State in my first 30 years of cars (80s, 90s, 00’s). Then when everything changed and little GDI engines with turbos became the new normal I relearned how to find the right oil for each vehicle I bought based on its individual engine. I quickly learned brand is not what matters most anymore. When you pulled out that FTIR, you blew my mind. Hats off. That's one expensive test to run. Also thanks to your videos, I'm switching to SP for my GDI engine. To shed some light on GTL. I was with Shell during the period it launched. So in the middle east, hydrocarbons wells are richer in gas to liquid ratios compared to wells at say America or off the south china seas. For years refinery in the middle east have flared off the excess gas as by product (they were too abundant to consume locally and too 'sour' to sell to Europe). With GTL, shell figured out a way to convert the by product to base oil generating revenue. The newly created raw material was then pushed globally to America and Asia. (Wells in both of these regions has cleaner gas (less sulphur) mostly sold as LNG to nations with stringent environment emissions limits on their energy (IE Europe /Japan) From memory circa 9yrs ago, shell's semi syn was made of BaseOil 4 whereas the Ultra Fully Syn range was from BaseOil 6 blend. Tonight, I still wonder if the GTL molecular structure is less stable compared to other higher base oil groups? Chemical wise a C10-C11 hydrocarbon bond strength would be similar once created regardless of the C3-C4 that made it. But personally from using GTL Vs Non-GTL oil, I noticed that GTL blend oxidises faster.

Question/Request: Can you explain why the top of the line Pennzoil "Ultimate Platinum" does not appear to meet Dexos1 standards, while the "Platinum" does.... at a considerably lesser price point? Pennzoil's back of the bottle comparisons simple show the difference as the "Ultimate" is for higher performance/protection than the regular "Platinum". Seems odd to me that a better performing, better protection & higher priced "Flag-ship" oil would knock itself out of GM specs..... Is it too good for GM? LOL. My 07 Toyota Camry is a known oil eater, Toyota used low tension rings on the pistons from 2006 to 2009. I purchased this car in March 2023 with 61,100 verified miles on the vehicle (real good CarFax report). When I change oil it takes about 4.8 quarts to get to the fill line on the dip stick and around 2200 miles I have to pour the rest of the oil left in the 5qt jug to get it back to the fill line. I did 3 oil changes on it so far (little over 10,000 I put on it over the last year), all three change sequences were identical. I use 5w-20, the oil pass through over the rings is minimal.
@JasPlun
@JasPlun 6 месяцев назад
It is sad the previous owner did not take part in the program Toyota had they could have had the ring issue fixed for free at Toyota. Thing is as time goes by it will get worse with a high risk of clogging up your Cat converters. It would be wise to have the rings changed. Wekll worth the money that engine with the new rings is a bullet proof engine that will easily last 300k miles if maintained. Do not wait too long because if you do the damage will get worse so get it in for repair before you have to rebuild that engine.@@oveidasinclair982

I also drive past what used to be the Pennzoil research center on my way to work every day. When those companies were bought out by Shell, a HUGE amount of talent left the area when they shut everything down. I'm sure they make great oil, but I am having a hard time buying any of it since they left. Probably just being overly stubborn and bull headed, but I knew a lot of good people that lost good paying jobs and pretty much everything they owned in the aftermath. The synthetic Formula one\Motomaster gets the job done for a daily driver but I wouldn't put it in something that is classified as "severe service" (towing, taxi, spirited driving etc...) nor turbo/performance cars. They have the bare minimum additive package to get past certification and tend to cake on intake valve on GDI engine much more than other cheap brands. I'm gusssing the Formula One oil evaporates more with high engine temperature? Don't take my word for it, just fork 45 quids from your pocket and get an oil sample analysed against a better quality oil, you'll see what mean.
