Let's talk about White Wilderness, one of Disney's award-winning nature documentaries from the series "True Life Adventures". There's a specific story in the doc about lemmings. It is entirely fake. In this video, we explain the truth.
I’m a big fan of brave wilderness and everything they do. I respect coyote Peterson and understand that sometimes faking things is the way to go, For example if the cameras weren’t rolling for the original catch, then they have to redo it and fake it. At the end of the day it is a franchise, but ive never seen nor heard any rumors of him harming the animals in anyway. I have been watching his channel long before he got big, and he and Mark always seemed to have love and respect for what they do and how they handle wildlife.
“Swimming away from shore” What he meant to say was away from the awful people who tossed them into the water and down hills! I wouldn’t swim back to shore either!
Here in Brazil there's a guy who had a whole TV show and now is facing accusations of animal cruelty and faking a animal death to a news article. They said he paid some fishermen to kill a river dolphin, but he denied
Im incredibly disappointed about the Brave Wilderness one🙁. I never thought Coyote would cop out like that. I just saw the ending. He does it regularly apparently!!!??? I’m actually sad. I would love to hear more about it though
The animals are captured for real. The captures are simply re-enacted to get a better shot. That said, basically everything in the series IS exaggeration.
Man it's insane to me how just having a celebrity status can make people refuse to accept anything bad about you. Why does everyone just leap to defend this guy? Just because you like his videos? He has a track record of this kind of stuff
@@HuckleberryHimexactly, celebrity worship/idolization is so depressing. People will throw away their personal ideals and thoughts for someone with a status of elevation in their mind
I would very much like to see more about brave wilderness, the way he presented himself always seemed so similar to those clearly faked survival shows where a lot of the stuff is staged
are you referencing the sting videos? You actually see the animal sting him in those videos. I'm sure there is a level of production involved, when searching for a particular animal, my guess is their resident biologist goes out and finds the animal in advance of the filming team and his search for the animal is either fake, or it's just cleverly edited to make it look a lot faster than it is in reality. I don't even think his sting reactions are fake, when you read what schmidt rated a level 4 sting, like the bullet ant, i'd scream too.
Coyote peterson is completely different. He does actually do all the things he does. Hes a part of the pain index team. I cant remember the name of the scale. But hes for real. Dorky but real. They do find the animals in the wild but will hold them for shots. Then after they are done shooting release the animals.
@@ExarchGaming Actually his sting reactions are fake‼️ Ok, maybe not _fake_ so much as overreacted lol.. but the *The Kings of Pain* got stung/bitten by a lot of the same critters as Coyote P. on their actual TV show and they referenced Coyote's videos for what pain levels they were expecting but most of the time they had *far* less dramatic reactions because they wanted to show people what to *actually* expect.. and since it was a network cable show, they didn't need to sensationalize the pain for clicks 💯🤷🏽♂️
Disney also got a bunch of puppies killed during one of the Buddies movies (the snow one). They filmed puppies that were too young in the middle of a parvo epidemic.
In the scene where they're being pushed into the water from behind, you can see one small lemming to the right of the screen try to turn around and go back the way it came.
What the heck!?! This makes me so mad. Wish they could be prosecuted for animal cruelty but I'm sure the statute of limitations ran long ago. But what I want to know is how did you find this out? That should be Part II.
@@asailijhijrsadly activists taking the name of peta often go overboard with their "activism" imo... and that's coming from me, someone who has been vegan for almost a decade now
Disney also killed many puppies for the film "snow buds" Sources: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UETalbNYQP0.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Buddies#Production
Wow just goes to show how shady Disney has always been, this video deserves more views, and would definitely be interested to see a Brave Wilderness video
The lemmings part actually made me cry. Even if I did watch it without knowing they don't commit "unalive" I still be crying. Sometimes people just don't care about nature and just abuse animals
Its not just disney, BBC and natgeo is also doing fake documentaries aswell ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G4NwLvlQu24.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j06RwPEOWgQ.html
In Brazil we got a case of a "nature guy" called Richard Rasmussen who used to have various tv shows in difrent channels back in the 2000s. He got accused of keeping an wild rare animal in a cage inside of a hotel, just for him to shoot a scene where he """spots""" the animal in his natural habitat
similar situation to dodo birds, in the ice age movies it shows them chasing food off a cliff, but the truth has been revealed that humans actually hunted them to extinction.
My mom has recited mass suicide info regarding lemmings for decades. She didn't know it was the result of a fake Disney documentary, let alone one called "White Wilderness." I attempted to show her pages from Snopes, Britannica, The Guardian, and other publications disproving the heinous lie. She continues to turn a blind eye and believe the old falsifications.
Yeah I've heard this story before. It's upsetting that the people making this documentary thought this was okay. That they thought nature on its own wasn't entertaining enough and thought "Hey, you know what would really sell tickets? _MASS UNALIVING!!"_ Not only that but it would lead to this mass misunderstanding of these creatures for decades to come.
I swear there's a "making of..." of the lemmings scene and it shows the film crew pushing them over the top. But some of the "cliffs" they used in the scene were film sets.
The poor turtle. That can't be healthy to get immersed and brought up again so quickly. Even for turtles. I hope he didn't had to redo the shot a dozen times.
2:50 - 2:56 Being from Alberta I can confirm that there is no “arctic shore” or any oceans in Alberta, so this was probably filmed in Manitoba where they had the northern coastline
There was a video about African wild dogs eating an antelope alive. In the video you can see the antelope being shot with a dart and it flinches. They cut to a few minutes later where it's drowsy and the dogs are eating it so messed up so terrible!! 😭
I mean, there are many other unedited videos of African wild dogs eating their prey alive. Do you know why they do that? It's not to be cruel. It's because lions, hyenas, leopards, can easily steal their prey. They have to eat fast otherwise not eat at all. That isn't a lie, even if the video with the darting the prey was.
I remember this exact lemming clip being played in high school. Honestly the only reason I knew lemmings were a thing. Was never able to find it and had no idea what it was from.
It's amazing how nature is so fascinating that they actually have to stage and fake scenes. As a Canadian their is no statue of limitations as far as I know so the Disney crew involved should have been charged.
Fascinating what happens in nature that some humans decide to throw some lemmings off the cliff and then claim that the lemmings committed mass suicide.
Beef, beef, beef, beef! There was a big ol' scandal with a bunch of herping channels faking rescues. Some channels would rescue their pet ball python half a dozen times, and tell you to subscribe to "follow their journey/recovery". People figured it out by matching scale patterns.
Love your videos!!! Honestly I can be having a bad day and soon as I see your videos I can forget for a moment the stresses of life. Your videos are informative and funny AF😂. Thank you, really.
I think I know which one you're talking about, the walruses that had barely any space and were forced to climb up high rocks to accommodate the population. I don't believe that was faked. The deaths came from an ongoing issue
Hello, my absolute favorite is Corbin Maxey right now. He doesn't have fake docus and all. I just want to know your thoughts about his reptiles and all his animals at his farm. :) Great video btw. Thanks for saving lemmings' reputations.
There's also a whole host of "primitive building" channels that basically stage the constructions too. SunnyV2 made a great video about it and it's so disappointing to see something like wilderness living set up for profit.
What Disney did was despicable, but I am pretty sure the idea of lemmings throwing themselves off cliffs is much older than Disney. I think there is a reference to it in Alice in Wonderland (the book not the staged versions).
When I was younger, I loved Brave Wilderness videos. I never imagined that they would fake stuff. Maybe over exaggerate, but not straight up fake stuff. I definitely would like to learn more about this!
This reminds me of that scene in penguins movie where the camera crew purposely knocked the babified trio off a Cliff golf style with the guy saying “give them a little shove”
@@akromimubarok6626 the only one I know of is they invited President Biden and Fauci onto their show. Their comment section was pretty damn incensed cause shock of all shocks, that's nit what a nature show is supposed to be about. Well, that and faking videos. I wonder what else there is...I want the tea spilled all over the house, please!
Oh crazy! My older sister told me about this when I was little. I believed her then, but as I got older, I dismissed it as too cruel to be true. And now I'm all kinds of 😰
I always found myself a little skeptical about blue marlins using their sword snouts to slice wild sardines up to eat them can you tell me if that's true or not
They don't 'slice' so much as 'bash' or 'whip'. Also it seems like they're trying to stun them, accidentally breaking the tiny bodies up doesn't seem to be the intention.
I actually watched this very cool documentary about insects and they actually show in the documentary how they stage the different shots. Wish more documentaries did that as well... (if you want to know they just make a open terrarium thing and place beetles and flys in there).
@@filthyneutral5801 yeah. I think they only stage catching some thinks for kids occasionally. Because people want to see them catch stuff. You can't film yourself catching something if you already caught it off camera, so they gotta make up for it.
what faith in humanity? we are literally killing ourselves and our planet with vehicles, and factories. if anything we are exactly like what disney claimed the lemmings did, mass suicide. all for money. :(
This was the 50's. Our standards were much lower then. I like to think we've come a long way since then. Maybe not far enough, but still a lot. Try not to lose your faith just yet.
This is just as messed up as the old classic milo and Otis. So many cats died in that movie and the English version tries to minor the blow of cruelty by adding peaceful music while in the original language you can here the cat crying out. And in that one they also pushed a cat off a high cliff into the water cause why not.
Brave Wilderness is an educational and entertainment channel, and I don't think there's anything wrong with setting up a scene for good intentions, but that's something they have to be really careful about as they could escalate and become too deceptive
What's educational about dunking a turtle you are holding at speed head first into water and plant material? What are you exhibiting there? Numerous examples of these "bits". I thought we were past exploitation films for "education".
Brave wilderness bothers me a lot. I mean... it's fine to act everything out, but he legit pretends to scream and feel pain towards any insect sting. Everything he has been stung by, doesn't hurt nearly as bad as he makes it sound.
This reminded me of Milo and Otis. It's an older movie featuring a pug and a kitten away from home navigating the world, with voice-over narrating their thoughts and "dialogue." Except they pretty much just put domestic animals in risky situations and filmed, adding cutesy music and VO in post. They send the kitten floating in a basket down a stream, put the pug on a beach with a black bear... I could go on. It wasn't presented as fact like these fake documentaries, but it's chilling watching it as an adult because the abuse and exploitation of the animals is so apparent.
second comment: didn't know Brave Wilderness faked his vids. That one especially hurts cause I liked him when i was younger and even met him at a live event. Fuck that business.
He fakes some catches because its difficult to always film and catch and get the right shot the first time, but from what Ive seen he doesnt disrespect the animals or harm them in any way, and has never done so.
@@AerisRising thanks for the response. I still dont like dishonesty, especially when its about something so serious/educational. I love one man channels on RU-vid like Lifeinjars, Budget Museum, and Natural World Facts, because they're much more trust worthy than something the equivalent to a television show (Check them out I highly recommend)
@@emensonkennede1431 steve Irwin did it wild frank does it, its not really a problem if you dont harm the animals and treat them carefully, when i lived in Florida i would usually grab iguanas to show them to my friends and release them later.
Would like to hear more about the brave wilderness beef... still though that turtle clip doesn't really surprise or bother me since they probably did catch it (probably with a net) but just didn't get the footage so they recreated it which is understandable, hey at least they didn't tie the turtle underwater and simple did a bad sleight of hand.
Animal cruelty was pretty common back then. It's just so sad because the whole idea to throw animals off a cliff and let them drown was probably some sick guys fantasy. And all the other people around him just agreed with it. There is also a movie called "the advantures of Milo and Otis" with a kitten and a pug. The shit they did to these poor animals is horrific and I think there were multiple "animal actors" that died and drowned while filming.
The fact that this misinformation spread like a literal wild fire, is absolutely terrible..... I couldn’t even imagine that this kind of manipulation was allowed. Also, yes I would like to see you cover brave wilderness
Do you have the link to the article where you read they were pushed? I heard of this story decades ago but they said the lemmings where chased off the cliff.
Reminds me of the "documentary" where walruses are falling from cliffs because of climate change, but they don't show the polar bears on the other side.
One of wild things about watching this and hearing this was filmed in Alberta is that Alberta is a land locked province so even if lemmings WERE naturally found here, there is no arctic ocean. Landlocked. There is no ocean in Alberta. This whole thing is so bizarre.
In fact, the episode that talks about this adventurer capturing a turtle out of the water, I couldn't believe he did it for real, and it's clear, how can you shoot, carry a camera, and at the same time make a step in order to pounce on an animal that is so fast moving in the water, you won't be able to pick it up.
The biggest by far is David Attenborough, some years back they used CGI in a proclaimed real documentary. David Attenborough was the moist famous natural historian, but used CGI, when this was never used before. The public got real close up video which made it so fascinating. No on else had gone to that level of detail and made a quality educational programme. Just for no reason and with not giving advance disclaimers CGI was used on some shots. It was scandal that was exposed and David Attenborough covered the the truth saying CGI was used to "enhance" when the public were under the impression each scene was filmed.
in the case of White Wilderness, I would like to know how much Uncle Walt knew regarding the production of White Wilderness and what was going on when these horrific sequences were filmed.
