On September 2nd a media frenzy greeted the publication of IICSA's report on the handling of child sexual abuse by a number of religions including Jehovah's Witnesses. I look back on my interview with Joanna Gosling of BBC News.

It’s their last resort, even though they should have started saying it at least back in 2016. It’s a little late… I hope that if any jws will start doing some digging on the org history because of these news, they’ll be able to do 2+2 and understand that they are being manipulated in such a criminal way…

He never left though really. He lives with them in his mind and heart, every minute of every day, never letting go, continually obsessing. That's not leaving. The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. He has spent years out of his precious life on a group of people with the right to believe what they like, just as he does. They don't do videos about him and yet he obsessively criticises them, lies about his own identity, and adapts videos and explanations to push his own unhelpful agenda... whatever that really is. There are people being paid to sit there putting out rubbish about certain groups including the JWs. We can assume this guy is either one of them or dangerously stalker-ish over a group he's meant to feel so free from. We all need to get on with life. If we join a group be loyal to it. If we leave then actually leave and don't keep harping on about how you "survived". John Cedars/Lloyd Evans/ needs to find a better way to use his time or else return to the group he can't let go of.

@@Kristilu88 I evaluate all levels of information - even observing the beliefs put forward by people on TV, RU-vid and Facebook etc. It's interesting to see how people think, and I do try to be respectful of the differences. I obviously can't agree with every different belief out there and have exercised the right to believe what I personally have observed to have the most convincing evidence of truthfulness. Just as others freely express their observations I express mine. Is that alright with you?

The most laughable thing in that regard is that the 8 meatheads in charge don't seem to have gone through any of that training at all. Some of the worst speakers I've ever heard. Only second to some of those that I've heard at KH meetings in the past that would just put you to sleep in a heartbeat.

I was so very disappointed when I watched the BBC report on Icsa's investigation on sexual child abuse in religion. I felt they did a shabby job and I felt that they were cosying up to religion. It upset me for the victims. Georgina

My niece, Kathy was sexually abused, my brother was encouraged not to call the police. She was 7 he was elders son 15. My brother was counseled by elders that it would bring reproach, do not report it to police. Kathy was deeply trouble, at 7 she had no knowledge of sex. It was extremeness. Kathy was emotionally damaged, it effected her bad, she began taking pain pills. I talked to her a few week before she over dosed, and died on fentonal, she married a JW, he abused her, she later had a boyfriend that abused her. Her self esteem was destroyed. What did 7 year old do to deserve to be sexually abused?????? Don't tell she was told, don't talk about it. If you do your hurting Jehovah. SHE IS DEAD, her sister who was also abused is in bad shape. Kathy told me she went to elders and asked to help about this effect. They told her "HELP YOUR SELF."

It was great you had the opportunity to speak out reaching viewers on BBC news. A lot of people are still in total ignorance of CSA within the JW organisation. What they do see is a couple of JW's who appear like decent people go knocking on doors preaching, but have no idea of the extent CSA within the JW organisation. We have mandatory reporting in the US in the majority of states and watchtower still refuses to follow the law. Our politicians are stupidly negligent in pushing the issue. I wonder sometimes if watchtower hasn't been handing cash under the table. I wouldn't put it past them if they have.

@@markbrann8529 I'm always reminded of 'dont let the perfect be the enemy of the good' at least you have a start with laws in place. Mayne they could be enforced more robustly. Perhaps JWs are providing political donations who can say, I doubt that they would as much influence because of their political neutrality. I dont know much about American politics but I was under the impression that fundamentalists Christian have influence because they vote. It would need to be a short term politician because if it came out he/she went easy on child abusers they can kiss goodbye to their careers

@@markbrann8529 I doubt jw have enough power to influence us politics to cover csa. I also hope it isn’t like that! Imo the issue is too little for the politicians, since the jw are around the 0.8% (or even less) of the us population. Politicians often use big themes that are well-spreaded around their country. This fight isn’t a one that will give them many more votes. Only an honest politician would fight for this. Just an opinion, anyways.

Hi Lloyd, I’m not and never have been a JW. I discovered your channel after falling down a Scientology wormhole. However, the abuses in the JW religion have really hit home given that there are 2 Kingdom Hall’s in the vicinity of where I live. I’m absolutely shocked at the abuses and practices that go on in the name of the JW religion and absolutely agree with you that this is a cult. Keep up the amazing work. Our daughter was sexually assaulted the person doing it admitted it to the elders but we were not allowed to hear what he said to the elders because it was confidential and the elders urged us not to contact the authorities complete bullshit

I felt you handled a difficult situation there - with the interviewing not anticipating the tone of your response - really well. If seems like the interviewer experienced some cognitive dissonance from your answer and that caused her instinctively to defended the inquiry from your allegation which I feel she had no real cause to do.

It's very important for the BBC not to get too one-sided. Ideally they would have had a representative of the inquiry there, as they probably could have given less of a "lecture" as Lloyd put it.

@metarmask for sure this is part of the motivation, and presumably why she starts off by explaining that she is responding because she has no one from the inquiry there. I was stuck by the choice of words. She asserts something about the motivation, re religion, for the inquiry as inarguable fact and she attributes to another journalist. Could be that she does the very thing in that moment that Lloyd is describing the inquiry as doing. Perhaps the full scope of the reality is too difficult to integrate even for people who have seen the evidence.

I think they are getting aware that yammering on and on is just blowing their own toes off with a shotgun one by one. All that's left is a nub at this point, so if they were to take on the BBC, time to blow off the whole leg. They just might after a month or so though. And to think, if they didn't do bad things, or harbor bad people, this never would have happened.

You came across as even keeled and objective, despite the disappointing elements of the report. Interviewer seemed objective, didn't interrupt, and gave you time. It was brave to go on with little notice and preparation. It was a big milestone in getting real change and WT will be held responsible for it's mishandlings, even if the timeframe is frustrating. I'm glad you didn't have more time to read the report if you'd of been more upset. We all need to do our part to come across as even tempered, and you did that. Well done!

I'm a victim of disfellowshipping I was born into the religion in 1975 had a father as a rapist and then a step father who was an Elder and I had to take abuse from him from the age of 10 and then follow in his footsteps I was disfellowshipped at 16 because my stepfather made sure of it please please get back to me hearing and seeing all of this knowing that I am not on my own has made me change my view on life it may have saved my life in fact 16 years of knocking doors taken out of school at 10 years old and was supposed to become a missionary lol please get back to me seeing this has changed my life

It made me proud to see you on the BBC. To me it is as if I was watching one of my favorite celebrities on CNN over here in the US. You did a great job especially in light of the fact you had so little time to prep for any of it. I see this interview as a real testimony to your experience as a researcher as well as the dedication you have for uncovering the truth. So savor some pride yourself because the BBC would not interview just any ex-JW with an axe to grind. You have definitely made your mark on the world as a result of all of your labor through activism. Its taken along time, before mobile phones and the internet, the late Doug Harris of Reachout was reporting this. I knew Doug well we spoke often, the BBC even phoned me to see if I could help them that was 30 years ago but the WT knew how to dampen things down and keep it under wraps, Good to se it coming back into the news again.

I was in JW till 17. They covered up my uncles sexual abuse when I was only 8 years old. They then disfellowshipped me for having pre marital relations and disowned me and kept my sexually abusive uncle in the family to this day. I haven’t seen them in 13 years. They deserve to be exposed! I feel sorry for other kids going through this always wished there was something I could do to help.

The sad thing is I would feel bad ruining his life even though he damaged mine so much. But if it helped stop him from hurting anyone else it would be worth it. Where do u suggest I make a video? More should be done, the 2 witness rule doesn’t really fit (eg., the girl in the field example in the bible) mentioned in the Australian royal commission. Elders are not qualified, people should go to the superior authorities ( this is what the bible says)

Unfortunately, the people who need to see this won't as they've been told to literally turn off their TV if their own religion gets mentioned in the news. Now it's up to the bible studies, the co-workers, and family members to express their concern. Despite WT encouraging bible studies to avoid negative reports, I think most of them haven't been indoctrinated enough to kill their curiosity. Great job on the interviews, Lloyd. You were professional and dignified and even if IICSA was disappointing the word is getting out. I had thought just a few months ago that while the CSA problem existed, it was overblown by apostates and the media. That changed recently. One of the motivating factors in my starting to speak out (albeit anonymously) was finding out that CSA had happened in my small hall multiple times, and most likely every hall I had been in. It is a bigger problem than most people think. The small changes the org has made are not enough, and kids are still not safe, and victims have not gotten justice.

This is insanely great progress in activism! I'm not even from Britain and I know so many JWs(and people in general) who love to watch and listen to the BBC, including my own parents. I know after splane's talk they'll probably just write it off as lies, but I'm confident that it'll help wake up a decent amount of JWs, and spread awareness to nonJWs. This is amazing

This is not just big news for an English person. I use BBC as my main source of news because I trust them far more than any American news source. Awesome job Lloyd! You're doing amazing work helping bring this to light.
