The cape is objectively a much, much better powerup than the super leaf. Everything the leaf does, the cape does objectively better. The value of the leaf is that the ears and tail are _cute_ ! Full Tanooki Suit and its ability to turn you into a statue makes it a lateral move from the cape. "Worse flight, worse melee attack, but ability to become invincible and kill many enemies such as Thwomps by falling on top of them using your superior hardness"
He finally got it right, you mean. It's not a Tanuuki Tail. Only one SMB3 mistranslation called it that, the Japanese booklet calls it just The Tail and Raccoon Mario.
Yes, finally got it right is exactly what I meant and the entire point of the post. Can't tell you how many times I've said, "You mean raccoon tail" to Dave on the screen, and but he never seemed to hear me. Until now.
Dave, your take that the cape is much better than the tanooki tail is not controversial; the cape is the most OP power-up in this franchise. I say that as a totally unbiased Super Mario World speedrunner. 🤣
The only reason the cape was so powerful was because the level design in SMW didn't seem to want to account for the massive cheese that the cape allows for. If you look at cave levels or underwater, the cape becomes completely useless.
Easier to use, gives better height/longer distance if you master its advanced tech (P meter refreshing on the Super Leaf when you bounce on an enemy is a Mario Maker mechanic, not part of the original powerup), attack has a more generous hitbox, attack kills more things, and attack can be used in midair? Yes, the cape is objectively a better powerup by every objective measure. It should hardly even be a hot take. You might have an opinion that it leads to more fun or interesting challenges or, like me, just think the tail and ears are cute and prefer it even while knowing it's weaker.
@@ParodyKnaveBob Yeah, I had a brain fart there. The rest of that comment still holds up, but I realized about an hour after posting it that the leaf does let you attack midair (it's still a great powerup, just nowhere near as good for mobility or combat as the cape feather; likewise I'd never call a Ford Model T a bad car just because basically every car on the road nowadays is better).
I think what we have to consider is the OG Tunuki was pushing the limits of the NES and many of the things they either couldn't do or fit into the game was revisited in SMW aka SMB4 which took advantage of new hardware. That's probably why the cape was made the way it was.
mario 3 was my childhood game too! my dad was a very strict person, always said games are just a waste of time! and I remember mario 3 was so fun, that even my dad would wake up in middle of the night just to play the game, and so that nobody could see him play because he saw it as guilty pleasure! fun memories!
Count me in the SMB3 fan club. The super leaf was a great step forward in power-ups. I do prefer the Hammer Suit, but still love the raccoon suit AND the tanooki.
i pretty much exclusively have bad dreams, but within the past year i dreamed about Dave twice. both times we were in a beautiful open landscape with pretty colors, and both times he was driving a school bus. we drove over a bridge that was on the water, just driving on seemingly endless calm rippling sparkling water. they were really nice dreams. idk what they mean haha, i rarely dream about youtubers. but tbf Dave is one of my favorites. i guess my brain just thinks he is a good trustworthy guy, schoolbus drivers have to be. thanks for the rare good dreams! and all the laughs! much love to Dave and family
Dave is right the raccoon suit isn’t the best powerup fro sm3 the best one is the hammer bro suit where it can kill pretty munch anything, even the undead.
Mario 3 was my immediate answer for "best game ever made" for several years during my childhood. Wasn't until OoT that it was finally convincingly dethroned (I think I had OoT before I had SM64 and ultimately I maintained OoT as my new GOAT even after SM64 came to town, despite loving SM64). IMO, the Raccoon suit was so novel at the time that its flaws were gladly overlooked. In 2023, it doesn't have quite the same appeal that it once did. And interestingly, I think the same is true of SMB3 as a whole. I'm at a point in my life where I dislike many characteristics of the game, and I have no desire to ever play it again. 90s "me" would be outraged.

Despite being roughly the same power I always preferred tge cape to tge raccoon tail. The frog suite was pretty bad too, but you hardly used it at least. SMB 3 seemed to push the tail on most levels.
It's ok to be absolutely and unequivocally incorrect about the Raccoon suit. Best power-up ever because it turned Mario into an airborne plumber. Any other power-ups have that distinction? Hmm? 😆
Your current position on Raccoon Tail Mario is partly influenced by the fact that you currently live in a world where we've seen other flight power-ups, starting with the feather and balloon in SMW and continuing to advance in the 3D era. It would be hard today to evaluate the SMB3 power-ups from the perspective of when that game was new.
5:50 I think you had to take the shell, bring it up there and throw it where that track is. So you can bounce and beat the level. (I think that track is just a signal)
Yes, that is just a single line version of the standard throw indicator, similar to " ⼕ ". I'm surprised Dave has not seen them before. its indicating a shell surf. If you think of it like an arrow, the nub is the base and the nub-less end is the point to show direction.
In my opinion I think SMW is better because it has more content and more replay ability because all the secrets and it has new abilities like the Spin Jump the Cape and Yoshi BUT SMB3 is a VERY close second so I completely respect your opinion (sorry if this message was long)

I can accept the SMB3 raccoon suit not being the best. It's easy to argue that SMB3 introduced flight, and SMW perfected it. But I do think that the raccoon suit may be better suited for puzzles where the cape is more suited for general flight. My only question is, do you hate the raccoon suit? If you don't hate it, I have nothing against you saying it's not your favorite.

I like Mario games but in Mario wonder I don't like the elephant power up. I find it worse than leaf Mario or raccoon Mario. And my all time favorite Mario game is the new Mario Bros for DS. That's my all time favorite Mario game.

My brother, please explain to me why you're disparaging the SMB3 tanooki suit? Clearly you never experienced the Leaf after having ONLY HAD THE MUSHROOM AND FIRE FLOWER FOR YEARS BEFORE. It was a revelation, and if you're just slagging it off because it makes SMM harder, well, you're just an embittered streamer guy at that point. And that's how you sound! There is no reason to pit the tail/cape against each other. They're not competing, except for in your head. Like claiming an old movie sucks bc it is black&white

I agree that the super leaf is overrated, cape feather is definitely superior. The physics using the super leaf feel slow and you can't spam the tail like you can with the cape feather.
It's not a bad thing to have opinions on power ups. If you are thinking objectively the feather is likely better than the tail. The tail was an older power up and they did come out with some really nice power ups since then. The tail for it's time was the OG. You had fun with it back in the day and you know it. It let you skip sections and find secrets. It was good for it's time. It's just the way of the world for newer things to come out that might do things better. I'd have to argue on it being overrated but it would be fair to say some better ones did come along. You just can't hate on it because it did pave the way for those new power ups. It put flight in the game for there to be a feather. Much disrespect wow. You could have stopped at saying you liked others better and the tail wasn't your favorite. You just had to take it too far. Since SMB3 was my very first video game I feel it is my utmost and solemn duty to be offended.

I agree that the Tanuki suit is overrated. Honestly, all the flight power ups are kind of dumb because they make level design worse in games where you can bring power ups to other levels.
I think the cape is overrated and over powered it has too much versatitlity which can be good but not my thing I prefer simplicity but I understand why he likes it. It makes things easier cause you can just float through a level.
