Fun little fact which taught me a bit about this method of scaling tricks, in The Lord of the Rings when Barad-dûr collapses (the tower that the Eye of Sauron is on top of) it was actually a real model in miniature. They used this method of slowing the footage down to create the illusion of it being a massive tower falling, along with some computer enhancements to create the explosion. Just thought that was neat and wanted to share it

I remember working this out when I was younger. In a sense, time passes at a different rate depending on size. It's not a coincidence that mice have a very fast heart rate, while elephants have a slow one. Also, smaller animals have higher pitched voices. And they can carry more of their body weight which is why ants and the rhinoceros beetle are so "strong" while a beached whale is helpless. So a high frame rate (and slow motion playback) is needed to make things look bigger. But things like water and fire behave very differently on different scales so they often give themselves away. Water droplets and waves, for example, tend to have a particular size.

And for those curious for where the term "overcrank" and "undercrank" came from, it refers to how film cameras used to be operated by hand using a crank, with the speed of the crank determining the frame rate. If you wanted to film at a higher than normal frame rate, you had to crank faster than normal. And if you wanted to film at a lower frame rate, you had to crank slower. Of course, eventually, film cameras would become motorized, allowing the "crank rate" to be controlled electronically, with less effort and more precision. And nowadays, we have digital cameras that have no mechanical elements, but the terminology sticks around.
