With so much footage, Dakar should provide way more coverage. It would increase the audience by a big margin.

I understand that you guys have to record and edit these pieces really quickly to stay relevant but I would kill for a 20-30+ minute video! As a newer fan it's hard to get excited over just 10 minutes of footage.

You, me and a few hundred thousand people too. I suggest you include checking out other team feeds as well like Red Bull Racing and solo teams like the Coronel twins. Last year I even took on a TV monthly subscription hoping there would be more content on their formal broadcast to the networks but it was just a compilation of all the clips here (stage highlights, landscapes, driver portraits, best moments). Disappointing. Now I just make do from various team sources. Maybe that's their strategy all along...

Coverage gets better each year. As much as I'd also love a 20 minute in depth broadcast I don't think that's possible with the given timeframe. But these videos keep improving each year. Red Bull have good slightly longer video's as well.

My guess is that it has to do with TV distribution rights. The organizers of the Dakar probably make millions licensing the broadcast rights to various media outlets and part of that agreement is that they are limited to what they can show on their own channels. It's a real shame because if they could really increase the fanbase if they posted more in depth content.

@@AnthonyJoh That would make sense if the TV networks actually broadcasted dedicated content but they don't, it's just a mash up of the same clips on YT. What you say is sound but I'm doubtful if it applies here. Unless someone can confirm they get great TV Dakar highlights.

So, this is the first/second year you follow Dakar? When they did it Argentina they covered minimum 5 minutes per category in English, French and Spanish. They did Dakar stories, history of Dakar and landscapes. But you say they are improving with a 9 + 2 minutes videos per stage, so good for them

Commentary has been English for quite sometime now, they have changed the commentator. The previous commentator was one of the best @dakarrally please bring back the old commentator

06:55 Look at the metal twisted end of Peterhansel's axle link damage! Shocking. You'd think it would more robust than that for the Dakar.

If that axle link would be robust it would bend frame on impact. It might be designed to brake on impact and easy to change. Than change whole frame.

@@dirtygypsyent Fair point and completely agree. Still extensive damage that needed the support truck plus lots of time, he's 23hrs down and out of contention. A real shame since he was second early in the stage and indicating the Audi was competitive. I love his calculating, long-game approach to Al-Atiyah's (and maybe C. Sainz) flat-out style. These three have great battles.

@@amjan Yes, from what I read, it seemed during a jump a big rock got jammed between the wheel and chassis that, during landing, it damaged some stuff when the car's suspension could not travel to absorb the impact.

That's one of our favorite stretches of desert in the whole country! The rock formations there are absolutely beautiful, and so fun to explore!

It makes no sense with all the current technology that such a race provides so little footage, similar to what happens with WRC, where it's all about interviewing drivers instead of showing the actual competition.

Loved that 911 Rally going around at the end! I would tune in to 24h coverage of live helicopter footage, no doubts. Not even edited, like a live selection of whichever heli has the most interesting coverage.

One of the many broadcast things that needed improving. I agree a compilation is better but at least 3 to 5 mins per category with clear mention of all the top 5 finishers

@Luca Goodoer Totally fair comment, however might the fan base be much larger than you think. I just suggest this possibility given the money and sponsorship that goes into the event. Nevertheless it would no doubt be of benefit if they branded the franchise and consolidate with other like rally’s to form a seasonal series of events. Yes a leap, but fun to ponder all the same.

Why do you cut the footage up into confusing short edits every year? It is a terrible way to present the race. Go back to the 1/2 hour daily updates / standing reports and leave it at that.

Бросается в глаза то, что с самого старта организаторы готовят серьёзные испытания. В прошлом году так то же было. И все команды настроены мега-серьёзно. На вкатывание совсем нет времени, и гонка начинается под девизом - "Погнали с самого старта на самом максимуме". Вот такие ощущения. Ну и... КАМАЗ-Мастер вперед к победе!!!

А я смотрел сначала ролик команды Камаз мастер. Там ребята решили полчасика вздремнуть, а потом подумать как взбодриться. А тут оказывается вон какие труднусти у людей! Как они ему грузовик то порвали, когда из переворота вытаскивали!

I have a question. Is there a technical reason the riders on dirt bikes do wheelies? I know you don't go faster doing one on pavement, but what about on sand? My take is that sand will slow you down, but if you do a wheelie, you eliminate resistance on the front wheel, which is more likely to sink down into the sand. Please let me know

Apenas um comentário (totalmente transversal): Fiquei observando a paisagem deserta com todas aquelas rochas saindo da areia e fiquei pensando que se um "visitante de outro planeta" pousa-se ali (como nós fizemos na Lua) tiraria uma conclusão absolutamente errada sobre o Planeta Terra; certamente os "visitantes" diriam entre si não haver vida em cenário tão árido, arenoso e rochoso. @@fffuuuu2 Apparently 15 minutes penalty. I was hearing from Macik (big shock racing) most of them had problem with some point and they expect 15 minutes penalty. But I am wondering why only Loprais is involved and not Kamazes. Will have to wait for some explanation...
