Her school failed her. The fact that it was reported a child had a gun 3 different times and they did NOTHING. So very sad, you can clearly see this has traumatized her. Teachers already dont get the treatment or pay they deserve
The Gun lobby, our elected officials and our society also failed her. If we have tons of guns in our country, they will get into the wrong hands more often. Countries that have less guns don't have the issues we're having NEARLY as often as we're having them. The schools would need a huge staff to keep track of the psychological profiles and family lives of every single kid in their school. They should certainly try, but it's a huge task and people WILL get missed.
@@slackjaw2643 That kids going to be in therapy for life too because I'm not even sure how you get around this. From the part of the interview where she says she remembers his face I have to imagine he did it with full intent and malice on his expression. What lead such a young kid to have so much anger is something that's hard to grasp and how anyone is going to help a kid get past it...even harder to understand. But the parents definitely were at fault.
Prior to the shooting, the boy had many challenges in school. To the point where one of his parents went to school and sat in the classroom every day. On the day of the shooting, a parent did not attend. If a child is in that much turmoil, why would he be allowed to continue in public school, possibly endangering not only teachers and other adults, but all those innocent children? It makes no sense to me
Wow, that’s an awful thought, but there may be truth in it, considering the parents watched and no doubt scrutinized the teacher. If this was a black family, there was no doubt Instant racial discrimination going through their minds, then the shooting would make more sense
If that is true, then the person or persons who did that need to be held accountable. It is sad to me where this country (and the world) is headed. My son is 25 and I can't help but worry about his future.
This is the in depth question I am waiting for and I’m almost half way through the video … just as it’s mandatory to mention your therapy to ensure consistency of medical treatment to support the lawsuit I would HOPE that someone would be just as compelled and dig deeper to find out what is happening to this child to get them to this point. I don’t know cause I’ve never been in this situation but I don’t think I could let it go until I found out what was happening to this child. Unfortunately it will probably be ignored the same way the threats were. Gratitude for your comment 💛
@MalicaMusic I keep asking that question what happen to this child to get him to that point. Most 1st graders love their teachers. What’s going on at his home and what did this teacher do to this child? Because this young child didn’t attack the other teachers he waited in the room and the teacher across the hall came in and the little boy did not get aggressive with her he actually turned the gun over to the teacher across the hall. I live in Newport News VA. I’m just curious why did the school allow the young boy in school without his parent or guardian?
I worked in a school with some very rough kids. I taught first grade as well. A minority of these children had severe behavior issues. One child in particular scared me because he had sociopathic tendencies. When I would ask administration for help I was always made out to be an uncaring teacher who couldn't manage her students. When I first heard this story I knew the child must have had a lot of red flags and admins did nothing. Hopefully this story brings attention to the fact that some children are such severe behavior cases that it is not safe or reasonable to allow them in a regular school setting.
This kid did have behavioral problems and had to have a parent with him at school. The day he shot his teacher was the first day a parent didn't attend school with him.
I hear you on that! "Oh, he draws stuff like that all the time" when I showed a picture of him shooting his "girlfriend". I obviously had a stern talk with him but the teacher just blew it off. I have a teaching degree and I choose to work in a corporate setting for many reasons but that this is so common and nobody doing anything to stop it, I would not go back to teaching. You do not get paid enough as it is let alone to risk your life. And that of course you may have up to 30 kids in your classroom and you have to somehow protect them with no means to do so other than try and tackle the shooter. If I couldn't get them all into the bathrooms and silent but preferable out of the window and far away. I couldn't deal with the guilt if one of my students died like that. Even though I logically know I have no real way to protect them but I have to do something and that it would no be my fault. But I'd feel like it was my fault a bit for not being able to protect them. It would crush me.
So wonderful to hear this amazing woman tell the story in her own words. My admiration for her is boundless, saving the class while losing breath and blood, just an astounding level of heroism and I'd give anything to tell her so. I hope she recieves any compensation her team can get.
I always praise my child's teacher every time I see her. I usually do work with my child at home and don't always have the patience. Teachers (the real ones) are incredible. Bless them all.
What nobody in the media is allowed to say is the 6 year old attempted to murder his teacher. The 6 year old deliberately brought a loaded weapon to school, deliberately pointed the weapon at his teacher, and deliberately pulled the trigger. As a society, we may need to accept that some minors may best serve society by remaining in prison for life.
Absolutely appalling that this kid was ascertained to have planned to murder this teacher. Parents charged??? Hmmmm? Kid put in a mental ward? Hmmmm? Not hearing these parents were held accountable
I agree with you. This is behavior well beyond the norms of civil society. A first grader still has a conscience and knows right and wrong. This child is the devil.
You never know how precious life is until you come close to never being able to touch or talk to your loved ones ever again. I am so happy they have that chance. ❤❤
You could see how hard this was for the interviewer in trying to be as sensitive as possible. I hope this teacher heals mentally. What kind of school is this??? Wow!!
I actually really appreciate how gentle the interviewer was. You can tell she actually wants to help this lady tell her story, some people just want to be the first to get what they see as juicy details.
Like so many schools sadly. Schools and the government need to take some serious measures to make this impossible. I have a teaching degree but for this and many other reasons, I choose to work in a corporate setting.
i know someone that has a daughter that’s a senior in high school. she got into her car after school and there was a spent 223 casing on the floor board. this isn’t the type of thing that just shows up on a floor board of a car. her mother reported it and the cops thought she was ridiculous. they don’t take anything seriously.
This incident is not normal, for a 6 year old child to bring a gun and shoot a teacher. It needs to be investigated. Something was going on, not right in that child life. Most adults do not know how to shoot a gun. Why would a child, especially that young, know how to do that? Lots of red flags! Are the parents responsible for this situation?😮
@@Nubian865 I agree. It's like they don't want to cover that. Just the recovery. I'm like what kind of weapon was it? What was the child's demeanor? What brought this on? Etc etc. What did other school personnel do and think? What happened to the child?
@Vida Curtis the child was a trouble maker that's why a parent was supposed to be in class with him the whole time..that day the parents weren't there. He had a history of threatening people.
What an awesome interview! I taught elementary school for years, 15 of those in first grade. I absolutely cannot wrap my brain around what it would be like for a little child to be in possession of a firearm, much less point it and pull the trigger. Prayers for this dear lady and for her family and friends. May justice, if there is any, be done in this case.
I taught elementary school 17 years, and 99.99% of small children are good, sweet people. The few that are horrible almost always are from horrible families who teach/allow their children to behave like psychopaths. ADHD has nothing to do with it. A child that small has learned that if someone "ignores" them, the appropriate response is violence, even gun violence. Think, people, where in the world would he get that idea?!
The parents of the shooter should have to Legally pay ALL therapies due to their son’s actions. The public school system does NOT care for its teachers. It’s a shame that Admin was notified of this student multiple times ; it took a teacher getting shoot for them to step in. What a shame
A student with the behavioral issues he had shouldn’t have been let in a classroom period. If I were a parent I’d take my kid elsewhere if he were in there.
@@dannyt7269 Same! Idc what "issue" that kid has. He's dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to be around normal kids. I would certainly make a big scandal at the school. It's not fair for normal kids to be put at risk just because other parents can't be bothered by raising their kids correctly.
About ten years ago, before I graduated a guy friend of mine said to me “someone in the boys bathroom was flashing a gun” I brought him to the office and told him to tell them they kept US in the office so we didn’t cause a panic and we got in trouble for “not reporting it sooner” it wasn’t a gun it was a gun shaped piece of plumbing that he brought to scare someone. But he didn’t get anything besides detention for 2 days… I’m from upstate NY
I use to work at a daycare and there was a 5 year old boy that actually bit a teachers breast. I can’t believe he didn’t get disenrolled from the daycare after that. I know after he began kindergarten, he was suspended at least twice in just the first month. He should be in 7th grade by now. I hope he’s gotten his anger under better control and has fixed his ways!
One of my grandsons went through a biting phase. We were in a shop, with him sitting in the trolly, when he lent foreword and bit my breast ,hard. Immediately, I bit him back..People were shocked and told me it was child abuse ..He never bit anyone ever again. He could understand that biting hurts.
@@meatavoreNana yea for sure my eldest daughter started screaming at the top of her lungs when I was a very young mother and it was so sudden and my instant reaction was to pop her straight in the mouth. She never screamed again. She's 18 now and it was a minor incident but you get the 1st time under control it don't happen again and THESE DAYS it's child abuse but look at rise of fkd up kids now.
How does a 6 year old know how to pull a trigger unless he was trained. I wouldn’t know what to do and I’m an adult. So sad for the teacher and the children who saw everything and the 6 year old who did it as well. What life is he living at home to do such a thing.
Most likely a very pro gun family. It's not unheard of to have children learn to shoot and parents think they're being useful for whatever derangement they're nursing in their own mind, but now we can see how it can have a negative impact.
I went to a gun club as a one off. Never again. The hand gun is sooo heavy. My arms hurt after a few shots on a target from a distance. I wanted to try it. Cross it off my bucket list. Been their done that' I wasnt good at hitting the target and enjoyed the experiance but happy to keep trying new different things not gun related again. I cannot imagine a wee kid having the ability to hold a gun. Hes clearly been taught.
This poor woman and what she has gone through. The 6 year old boy should be held accountable along with his parents. Horrible that he would be this violent at only 6? What is wrong with him and his parents, I mean really?
I am so glad that she sues the school district and make them accountable. All school district needs to have better security and safety in school for all students and staff.
Or the parent I mean if his father was absent then it can be hard but his mother is facing charges and i hope she gets prison time. She knew her kid was violent and maybe she was perhaps violent to the kid herself. Kids copy a lot of what they see.
Exactly. Because the Child is 6 they won't let The Child Talk. But I would ask that Baby 1 Question. WHY? Why Did you Shot HER? I Would love to hear what that child has to say.
As a VA native and previous ABA counselor, it’s so hard to see this. I had my arm broken so severely I had surgery in several places and suffered a miscarriage. My boss, a veteran, told me it wasn’t broken because “you’d be crying a lot”. Other workers, while I was out for surgery and sad over my miscarriage just before my wedding, told the child that he should be sorry to me. I couldn’t stay back there, I know it wasn’t his fault, even though he was older and much larger than me. It’s the fault of the company. I was able to stop anyone else from getting hurt, but I can’t imagine a GUN.
I pray you are well and one day continue to help kids but in a safe place and with proper supports. Some kids have a disability and don't know what they are doing but there should be people in class that can match that childs strength to safely subdue and not injure. I pray our teachers and paraprofessionals be safe and stay kind, don't give up on the kids but demand you be safe and cared for as well.
@@tanyasmalls2089 I 100% agree. I’m no longer in ABA as a therapist, but I will always understand that the student was never intentionally hurting me. I’ve been bit, kicked and seriously injured but that’s sort of what I signed up for when I went into the field. Sometimes, helping others comes at a cost and that is just how the world works. This teacher, for instance, was a total hero!
Tears just flowed while watching this, it's so hard to comprehend this happening in a 6 year old class room! She has been through so much, and watching her mom and sister too 😭😭 Thank God she survived this, and she really loves her students. I pray she heals physically and mentally real soon from this.
The school failed her for not listening to her reports of the gun!!! The parents should be charged for neglect, having a gun in the house around children.
The mother was arrested and will be tried for owning an unlicensed firearm and negligence. The parents tried to dismiss this case early on by claiming the child was afflicted with a variety of mental disorders. The world needs more psychological help than people can fathom.
As an outsider of America (I live in Sweden). It´s so absurd and insane to hear about shootings in America basically every single day. Like I dont understand why the Gunlaw is more stricted and more stripped down. I saw on TikTok an American question us outside "Do you want to visit America/US?", and for me who lives in Sweden and have heard about America basically all my life, specifically those High School movies like Mean Girls and High School Musical. Yes I wanted to visit America, but now since all the shootings and stuff, I´m absolutley scared and dosent feel safe. All the prayers to all of those who have sadly died in shootings.
So what percent of that 100 is on the government that mandated that child be in the class room and then when there was a problem the SYSTEM IGNORED IT. Yes, the parents do have some blame in this but it seems like them showing up in the classroom on a regular basis clearly shows they where not absent parents. Again I am not saying the parents are blameless just maybe not the 100 percent you have assigned them.
I hope that she is a symbol for positive change in every classroom. The entire situation is heartbreaking and scary, I hope for a better experience for children in need and the teachers/parents that are being trusted
@@jazminewaters2404 Abby Zwerner did file a $40 million lawsuit and the details are shocking. All the prior incidences of violence and the way the admin reacted left me dumbfounded.
This was devestating! Hearing her story of the incident. Unbelievable a 6 year old kid/student, that shot her with a gun. Thanks be to God, she is alive. Thank God, she was also able to help her class children/students, get to safety. Thank God for the several co workers, acting quickly, to suppress the bleeding from the wounds, until the ambulance got there. She is a hero. Helping, while she was hurt. You are indeed a miracle! God has a purpose for your life! So sorry this happened to you! 🙏 Praying for your mental trauma and health. May God bless and heal you, in Jesus Christ, name!
Well, I hope this school AND this family learns what a lawsuit is!!! Three times they were told he had a gun and did NOTHING!!!! TAKE IT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!
This sweet woman will be traumatized for life. How on earth was this student allowed to continue to be in that classroom. If you have any child in the home, fire arms should be kept out of reach.
I’m sorry this happened to you no one deserve any of that I wish you well and you heal and have peace in your heart and soul keep praying it works blessings be
If parents in our country were held 100 percent responsible for their children or teens or young adults? Punishable by prison and monetary and public service over years. Then maybe these parents would be more responsible in raising children. If the parents knew they could go to prison, lose jobs, house etc. Really getting tired of mass murderers and cases such as this? It is maddening that parents are so irresponsible by raising these evil kids.
Savannah did an amazing job interviewing. Thank you for not making her not feel less of a person due to what happened. A lot of reporters don’t interview trauma well.
The interviewer did a great job of being mindful of this lady bein fragile and traumatized bt it set up a boring interview now that we are finally hearing it from the actual teacher i want to know in depth "what was the look on his face?" "What did you say to the kids to get them out of there and where did they go?", "where was he when they found him after the shooting?", like take us into the experience if you are going to talk about it..we know it was surreal and scary tell us what we don't know..nonetheless i am very happy this woman is alive i pray she heals mentally physically and emotionally and she remembers there is still a beautiful life ahead of her to live ❤
Abigail said "I'll never forget the look in the child's eyes when he shot me". What was the look? Did he have hate in his eyes? Nobody talks about this.
I believe I did hear about this story on Abby Zwerner. I know it will take time recovering mentally especially, and physically too. It is a blessing as she's still here. To Abby, continue recovering, and staying positive in spirit.. as consciously the flashbacks will be there. Pray that consciously those flashbacks will ease, cease to where they don't get any authority over your life. You survived, that says plenty. You are purposed. Continue to seek what that purpose is, as destiny still has that place for you!
He is 6 and has severe emotional problems apparently. I believe he was put into some kind of facility. The parents definitely need to be charged or held accountable in some way as well as the school. This poor teacher had many people fail her. I hope she is able to find peace and recovery xo
A 6 year old with mental health issues cannot be held accountable for their actions. The parents need to be charged and the school officials that failed to act on the warnings should also be held accountable. It won’t erase the trauma she experienced but I really hope she sues the district because they failed her.
That Child should not be in a mainstream regular school. Child is too mentally disturbed to handle it. That school’s decisions tarnished every single other child in that regular classroom.
As a teacher who lost half of my index finger a few months ago on my dominant hand I can really sympathise. I hope that despite the ups and downs she doesnt give up on her recovery. She should be able to get a prosthetic if full recovery isnt achieved so she will regain her independence. I wish her luck. The other effects are impossible for me to fully comprehend.
I hope she will be able to heal better physicaly so she can return to a better normality She is very strong and she will survive from this ♥️ she is still young and have so much more to live and experience 😊 God bless her
I know suing the school system and hopefully the parents someday won't erase what happened but hopefully some money she gets will Aid in her physical and mental recovery❤
I hope the kid gets the help that he needs and grows up to eventually understand the gravity of what he did. Hopefully one day he can sincerely apologize to the teacher and go on to be a healthy, productive citizen; maybe even helping kids who are in a similar situation that he was to make sure this never happens again.
@@АлександрСухин-ф5щ A child shooting someone is not normal. It is evidence of a lot more social and mental problems than just being a “bad seed.” If he is helped now, it may stop more people and himself getting hurt later.
There is a therapy for P.T.S.D. that involves strobe lights and recall. It might not be for everyone but it has worked for some. I hope she has a strong support team in her family! May God bless her!
How does this kid get a hold of a gun? How would he know that his parents had a gun, let alone where to find it. And then how does he know how to use it?! Where does that anger and hate come from?! Surely kids aren’t born good or bad. It has to come from somewhere.
I wish she asked her, “what do you feel was going on in that boys head at the time” or something like that. It just boggles the mind as to what made that kid do such a thing; especially such a sweet woman.
Exactly. The teacher mentioned the child's expression twice but never expanded on it. I also wish that they discussed the events that led to the shooting. Did the child bring out the gun and shoot just out of the blue? Was there some kind of verbal exchange just before? I couldnt find any information about why the child did it.
@@Scatron I think it would be helpful to know what triggered the boy to bring a gun to school and target ONLY HER. LOL! =Ummm Uvalde Elementary had Security for staff and students . Americans are so childish, selfish and sadly so dumb gun freaks would rather CHILDREN DIE than have regulations on their toys . Our country has MILLIONS more guns than people with few restrictions. THAT is why we have an insane amount of school shootings compared to other countries - most of which have none.
I think justice would be the school staff that knew about the gun and not doing anything being held responsible, including prison time and fines. It wouldn't have happened if the gun was confiscated
They said the school was starting all these different safety groups etc. but they already had safety in place and the boy had been checked and nobody did anything, more safety groups won't help
A source close to a responding officer at the time in Virginia has said that the boy took the gun from his mother’s purse the morning of the shooting, which she didn’t realize was gone until the incident occurred. ….They only shifted to responsible gun owners once lawyers became involved.
