Hey F1, just a reminder - Indianapolis still has a Grade 1 classification, and is a lot more accessible and affordable to most Americans than Vegas or Miami!
Seeing the flags and fans in the packed main stand gets me so hyped. I’m a sucker for Vegas personally but both Vegas and more so Miami are so so bland and soulless, it hardly feels like anyone is even watching. Plus a race at Indy (w even somewhat affordable tickets) would instantly become the highest attendance f1 weekend in the history of the sport.
With the hype and interest for f1 very much on the up would love to see Indianapolis over Vegas or Miami. I get with Indianapolis as a city not being glitzy or have the general attention like Miami and Vegas but frankly speaking Indy is a great spot to host something like F1. With the current hype and interest f1 is having in recent years,it’ll have strong attendance. Vegas is cool but feels more like a show than a racing event and Miami even though we’re having a race this weekend but frankly speaking it’s a place I honestly sometimes even forget we had 2 races here which just shows how bland Miami is.
The Indy road course layout doesn't even use the "oval turn 1" anymore and is replaced with another turn coming from the short straight into a hairpin and then either to the pits or back up another straight into the main straightaway back to the start/finish line how can F1 cars respond to that.
the tire wars meant that sometimes different teams were completely untouchable.....the racing will be even more predictable. Although.....seeing how different tires and cars thrived in different conditions, we saw Sauber on the podium with Frentzen here and different people leading comfortably.....so maybe we need that. Kinda like 2012 Pirelli tires, except the performance grip range is the same as today (or better), bringing the unpredictability and variability back from that time.
I was at this race. Row 4, turn 1. Absolutely an honor to watch Schumi race in the rain. I’ll never forget the sound of those V10s coming down the straight and the glow of the brakes after the almighty braking zone into T1
Kimi and Michael’s races are great on the two extreme end of the spectrum. Michael had a garbage qualifying and at one point of the race when a little drizzle basically lost all sort of performances given the tyre can’t cope but didn’t panicked and in his favor the weather changed which made the switch to intermediates and his race never looked he’s gonna be troubled. Kimi looked poised to win but after the weather change his race win was already tough given the Michelins are poor but dude finished almost a lap up on the nearest Michelin runner which is amazing on how he’s able to get a lot of performances out of these tires given they’re garbage in the wets. Two really great drives from two very talented drivers
One of the best seasons with Kimi, Schumi and Montoya fighting for the championship! Also this was the last season where Williams was seriously fighting the championship
Montoya showing his class and massive confidence into the banking in mixed conditions, nearly flat...getting by Schumacher like he wasn't there. Such a monster, such a legend!
Kimi Raikkonen drove one of the greatest races of the modern era that weekend. Those Michelin tyres were totally inferior once the conditions became damp (but not full wet). He somehow managed to stay in touch and extend the title to the final round. Genius.
@@x-rinanimationchannel3687 Well we're going to have to wait and see in 2026. The team just signed Nico Hulkenberg as their one driver for 2025 and beyond, and negotiations have all but failed to get Carlos Sainz as their 2nd driver.
Engine blowout at Nurburgring and this rain at Indy basicly killed Kimi's title in 2003. He drove brilliantly the whole season, in a car that was a year old spec updated the whole year out of necessity. Fantastic season otherwise, with Michael, Kimi and Juan Pablo /Ferrari, McLaren and Williams respectively/ giving it everything. Kimi on Michelins was the primest version of himself, those tires suit him perfectly, I always tought he was never completely in sync with his car, after 2006, despite his title in 2007. Great memories of intersting years in between Ferraris dominance.
The rain at Indy,the engine failure at Nurburgring and the mistake at Montreal all played huge parts in kimi fighting the title on the backfoot. Dude drove the wheels off that updated 2002 McLaren to its absolute limits even when it’s so well out of its development cycle.
All true Kimi drove brilliantly all season in 2003 gave it his all in a updated 2002 Mclaren car yes the Michelins tires suited him perfectly and the car.
I was at that race! Cold, wet day in Indy. Very memorable to see Michael’s 70th win. I am from Indianapolis and attended many 500s. Seeing cars in the rain at IMS was a sight to see. Not something you get to see often.
Michelin makes great rubber. Those tires are literally the best for performance and durability not only on the street but on the race track, and I'm always happy when I put Michelins on my car. I wish Michelin would be a tire supplier for F1 again.
YES! This was my first ever race I attended at 10 years old. Seeing the screaming V10s rush by me down the main straight is something that I will always remember.
Tbf the Indy GP track isn't that great either for F1 racing, plus it would be too small and short with the current cars. That being said, I hate the fact that F1 has 3 GPs in the US. Don't like Vegas but I would give them another chance. Miami is awful and I wanna see it go away.
Vintage Michael Schumacher performance in mixing conditions. Dude won so many races in conditions like this, after qualifying poorly and nailing the pace in the middle of the race (Spa 1992, Spa 1995, Indy 2003, China 2006)
Montoya was such a monster. Basically Max Verstappen on steroids, but with a bad attitude and unwillingness to learn from his mistakes which cost him his career in F1.
Him refusing to yield that corner to Barrichello basically cost him the title as he wasnt able to come in for wets when he needed to. The thorn in Schumi's side in this era but could never put a title charge together
@@declanthomas7159 Barichello didn't leave him space. Had Montoya had slightly more room they wouldn't have touched. Rubens got away with a few accidents that were his fault and he should have been penalised for like Melbourne 2002.
Montoya was a medium driver, he cannot keep cool. It's a Colombian, you will never see a Colombian winning anything even if they are in the best conditions.
The amazing thing about this era is its Top drivers at full qualy pace, every lap (as it should be at this level). Its a huge shame that its been a tire management series for the last few years and the drivers can't go all out.
This is the F1 I fell in love with. The cars have that scintillating magic about them that has been lost in the turbo-hybrid era, that pulls you in just to see them dance and scream around the corners. And to hear the wall of sound slam through you as it echoes through the Brickyard - that is something that never leaves you.
You know what would be nice? If FOM/F1 added this race to F1TV archive It's been 6 years since the streaming debuted and we still have less than half of the races from 2003 season
Kimi Raikkonen drove the wheels of those Mclaren Cars. The cars really suited his driving style and he liked the Michelin tires. He was able to get the maximum out of them.
I was there and I remember about 30-40 before the start there was a slight shower with some small pea sized hail. I also remember it was cool that day.
Williams and Montoya blew it that year, they had a fantastic car and by far the best engine on the grid with the BMW V10. Mistakes by Montoya and the Team cost them the title.
Right, Montoya was nowhere in the first part of the season. But he had a great comeback starting from his Monaco win, finishing on the podium every time till this exact race. I think he or Kimi deserved this championship more, having won two and one races respectively, but keeping up with Michael, who won 7
Everything was better then, no doubt. Camera angles, sounds of cars, sense of speed, refueling, and again the camera work and angles was way better than today's advanced technology of recording
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I wish this race came back. Indianapolis is such an iconic venue, and that turn 13, despite being a bit of a problem child, was an awesome corner to watch the cars scream by. In my ideal world, this and COTA would both be on the schedule, as the only two American GPs on the calendar.
@@CristianVillalobos Not helped by the FIA changing the tire rules mid season to outlaw a Michelin tire construction that had been in use for the previous two years
@@senorsoupe they were not "legal" since they extended the maximum tread width of 270mm. Michelin bypassed this since they only were meassured when they were new. Ferrari and Bridgestone complained and had every right to do so.
