I have a good friend from Greenfield, I live in West Des Moines. Do you think this is an F-5? I believe Joplin's tornado was an F-5 and it was devastating. I pray no one was killed and all will recover, but what a shock, tornados are the worst, there is no preparing for them like you can with a hurricane.

I was driving semi when the tornado took out Joplin Missouri my truck broke down I think I was about 20 mi away or so when they finally got my truck going there was nothing left of Joplin it was very disturbing to see what happened
Expert amateurs (lol) are saying it’s probably up there around high EF-4. Official ratings require specialists to actually look at things like the exact type of fasteners that attached structures to foundations, the weight of objects lofted and how far, etc. It won’t make EF-5 unless they get 200+ mph wind data.

@scarpfish I mean, confirmed 200+ mph winds, slabbed anchored homes with bent anchor bolts, manhole covers pulled out of the ground, wind turbines flung hundreds of feet into the air and ripped apart, large concrete slabs torn off of the ground, completely debarked trees, vehicles torn down to their chassis, all while traveling at up to 90 mph. You don't have to be an NWS surveyer to speculate that this was likely reaching EF5 intensity at some points of its path.

Where was the 'lord' at when it took the lives of 4 innocent people and impacted countless more? I much rather condemn the 'lord' for allowing it to happen to begin with than a useless prayer after the fact. Prayers everyone! We were watching closely to the television when it was coming over Greenfield. We were narrowly missed by a potential twister in Schuyler County, MO an hour ago.
In red oak, I watched a tornado touch down just behind the grain bins at the local Co op where my step father and brother works. We got lucky today. I hope everyone in greenfield will recover, this is a very bad day for iowa once again
Really curious how they will classify this. On another video showing damage, there were 2 streets where it was just a bare slab for the foundations. Just might be our first EF-5 since 2013. My heart goes out to all the victims and those impacted.
Wind speed probably not high enough for EF-5. Almost for sure a very strong EF-4: pavement damage, debarked trees, massive objects lofted, wood impaling trees and cars, debris ball lifted possibly as high as 40k. We’ll know later I guess.
@@irenafarmI mean, if we're talking about winds, there are readings above 200mph, I think. However, that probably doesn't even matter. The 2013 El Reno had some sub-vortices reaching above 290mph and that was classified as EF3. The damage matters at the end. And honestly, at this point, the NWS seems pretty reluctant to ever give an EF5 rating again.

@@irenafarm I know, but Tornados are classified based on damage done, the bare foundations on one street in another video leads me to think it might have. Tornadoes are classified by highest damage done, even if it only did EF2 damage 99% of its path, but in one spot it did EF4, its rated EF4.
Hate to hear this, I'm in the Memphis area, and we had the severe outbreak of Tornado's last May of 2023 about this time. I only saw the Covington area that was a little of me North that was hit, and it was bad like this 😥
This is so sad to see. I was born in Fontanelle and grew up in Creston. At 76 I still have classmates and relatives that I just hope are safe. I raised my family in Ames and rural Huxley and I hear there is damage all across Iowa. 😥
I was cooking dinner when we had a tornado warning here in Arkansas near Quitman. It didn't drop much but you could see the lightning striking around the funnel cloud. Pretty scary.
Some of the winds from this storm system had 100mph winds in some places, as it moved along from there. Life seems to be just wiped out there, condolences to the townspeople.

The only thing that doesnt justify an EF-5 Rating is the build quality of the houses Highest they can rate with this build quality (low quality in this rural area) is EF-4.
Sorry for your loss everyone. Ii have cousins that live Sulphur,ok. Tornado did the same thing there. Some small towns haven't seen a tornado in a 100 years. Prayers for all.

And for rating tornados, ef5s are rating when theres at least some ef5 damage like the candian ef5 where it was rated a 4 until they realized in footage it picked up and destroyed a whole house at once
As long as people have insurance and the insurance pays out people can recover to a large extent. But as these storms get worse and cover more and more of the country fewer and fewer people will be able to buy insurance. Parts of California and Florida already are uninsurable due to wildfires and hurricanes and tornadoes.
