In this DIY painting project, I took on the challenge of using exterior satin paint, Zinsser Allcoat, indoors to transform the look of my stairs, doors, and skirting boards. I documented every step of this unconventional endeavor to share my experience and results.
To ensure a smooth finish, I began by preparing the surfaces meticulously. Using 150-grit sandpaper and specialized Mirka soft sanding pads, I sanded down the surfaces, including the intricate stair spindles and balustrade, to create a suitable key for the paint. Afterward, I used tack cloths to meticulously remove all dust, ensuring a clean surface.
For added protection and to prevent any knots from bleeding through the topcoats, I applied a high adhesion primer, Zinsser Coverstain, which I thinned down by 10%. This primer was expertly sprayed using my Graco HVLP professional sprayer, specifically on the stairs that had wood varnish.
Once primed, I denibbed the stairs with 240-grit Mirka soft sanding pads and proceeded to apply multiple coats of the diluted Zinsser Allcoat, with up to four coats on the skirting boards. Throughout the process, I fine-tuned the spray gun settings to prevent any unsightly runs.
After two coats of Allcoat on the stairs and up to four on the skirting boards, I achieved a finish that exceeded my expectations. Join me in this video to witness the remarkable transformation of my interiors with the unexpected use of exterior paint

FYI Zinsser BIN stops knots in wood, the Coverstain works ok for tannins. So them doors need a touch of BIN, the knots on the stairs will already effectively be sealed by the varnish. 😉

Glad I'm not the only one that procrastinates with decorating. I'd be lucky if it only took me 30 min to psych myself up for it.

I like Allcoat, good paint. In fact I have not found a Zinsser paint I dislike. It is pricy does the job very well though. Still watching in the South of France 🇫🇷, trying not to think about all those outstanding jobs at home. 🍷

I love using Allcoat. I've only ever brushed it on and find that the opacity is good and the flow excellent. I've never needed to dilute it. The satin finish is unusual, it looks almost pearlescent. Very quick drying too.

I don't rate the MSP (very plastic looking) but Bedec barn paint is very good.

I work for Brewer’s decorating centres and we have loads of decorators who swear by it as it’s a primer sealer and top coat in one. I’ve used it to spray my wrought iron gate and it was fantastic. It does say on the front of the tin exterior but on the side it says interior exterior.

Good video. Bit messy with the over spray but good effort mate. Flotrol is a paint conditioner additive. Most of the WB paint manufacturers say damp cloth wipe down before painting helps the paint pull. I usually brush and Wooster red feather mini roller doors and skirting I'm quick but spindles are tricky

About a year ago, we bought our current house. I bought a Graco airless sprayer from the USA, a transformer, for way cheaper than uk prices. I sprayed most of the house with exterior Allcoat. It’s another Zinsser miracle paint. The first coat is a priming coat. The second coat is the top coat. I love the Zinsser white colour when I’m after a white paint. You can get Zinsser Allcoat coloured at, for example, Brewers, if you want high end Zinsser performance paint, and the colour that the other half has only thought about 😇

How did you find using the airless with the allcoat? Did you thin it a little?
@dwalsh3469
@dwalsh3469 Год назад
No Mate. There is no need to dilute water based paint with the airless sprayers. (I don’t know if oil based paints are different.). Thus far, I’ve sprayed about 20 litres of Allcoat, 5 litres of 123, about 10 litres of Lick, and a couple of litres of Bedec barn paint. Straight from the tin with no straining or diluting. No problems with the sprayer.

Great vid aiden, whats the masking tape on the tin trick. Is it to stop messing up tin?
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Год назад
I saw it on a short format video, I think it's supposed to help funnel the paint out into something smaller and stop the paint going round the top of the lid. Waste of time with this small tin though 😂 unless I just done it completely wrong

Im having nightmares thinking about doin my staircase from 1930s. Basically has a few layers of oil paint and then either a stain/varnish which id guess was put on when 1st built. I was thinking of spending days taking paint of (no idea how yet as dreading it). Leaving the varnish or stain and then 2 coats of bin followed by a satin paint with couple coats. Could i just roller/brush this stuff on instead with 2 or 3 coats rather than doin couple coats of bin and paint ?
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 27 дней назад
@@umranhu I'd key it and then do one coat of bin then 2 coats of allcoat. The white allcoat doesn't cover well without an undercoat, and bin would be the right stuff to use to avoid any issues (although I got away with using the coverstain).

@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Год назад
@@GlennPierce haha well hvlp is supposed to be more controlled so I'd rather use that over airless. It's perfectly reasonable to spray with the property kitted out but it just means you have to do a little more covering up and masking. There's a few videos on yt about controlling over spray and it seems to come down to getting the settings right which may only come with experience, and you don't get experience unless you try it 😂 so yes I'd recommend it with caution 😉

I'm in a bit of a quandary myself - thinking about getting an HVLP sprayer, but the Graco option comes with a hefty £1,000 price tag for a second-hand unit. I noticed you've got an Erbauer HVLP, and I'm curious if you've ever given it a spin with Zinseer AllCoat. I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether it's worth going for the Erbauer or just taking the plunge and splurging on the Graco. Any advice you can share would be awesome. Thanks a bunch!
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Год назад
I've seen people putting their 2nd hand units up for a grand but they just sit there for ages. The one I bought was up for £850 so I offered him £600 and he said he would do £650. I'm sure most sell for around 750-800. I have actually used the erbauer with some black allcoat for my metal trusses (still need to finish that 😂) it worked ok, had to thin it down quite a lot and it tended to block up the end quite alot where the paint was drying. I couldn't comment on the finish of it though as the trusses were rough metal. (Maybe I should do a video comparing the 2 using allcoat 🤔). When I tested out the erbauer with some eggshell it didn't come out very well, it was definitely an orange peel effect. The orange peel effect happens when there isn't enough air to atomise the paint. The bigger needle doesn't help with this as well. Personally I wouldn't use a low powered hvlp for anything inside. Painting sheds and fences then absolutely. If the Graco 9.5 is a stretch then maybe keep an eye out for a 3 stage hvlp for a couple of hundred. Another option might be a 2nd hand Wagner xvlp (3500 or 5500).

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT thanks mate for taking the time to reply and now I know I’m either going to go for the graco if I can find it at a reasonable Price or I’ve seen an Apollo 3 stage hvlp for around £400. The finish looks amazing and certainly beats using a roller or brush
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Год назад
@@ChrisLivingInYork yeah I was gonna try and go for an Apollo as my next upgrade from the erbauer but got the good deal on the Graco. I do see quite a few people swapping to a compressor set up though with a remote pot on the Facebook spray groups. That's why the bloke sold his to me
