This video series is the best out there and holds the test of time. I came back today to get a review of the cleaning solution ratios. I had a tough time finding the video. Perhaps I'll write it down this time. I used this series to paint my house 7 years ago. My house still looks great. Use good paint.

Hey! Thanks for the great video. Quick question, I just did an addition on my house and have new, un-painted siding. Its will have been a few weeks before i will get a chance to paint it. Do i need to primer that siding, and or wash it before? Or will the exterior house paint act as the primer?

Next time when power washing add some Dawn dish detergent to your cleaning solution (1.5oz per gallon). I think this will save you from having to clean the windows after power washing.

Doing it right is probably the difference between a paint job that can last a decade or more..and one that starts peeling almost a month later.. so yeah..the prep is JOB #1 .. thanks so much for thise video.. I had some painter come to give me an estimate.. and the house is mostly brick except for the top of a typical rambler home.. and the cheapest was in the thousands.. and I ask what prep job they did.. the guy was . we scrape and paint.. no powerwash, just a quickl swipe with a rag... and slap on the paint.. I was like.. that dont sound right to me.. no wonder the guy was squirly about any warranty.. he was.. if it dont stick its the paint manufacturer fault.. pfft.. I never called them back.

A viewer asked me if it's necessary to use the detergent, or if simply spraying with high-pressure water is enough. I believe the detergent is very important to remove any grime/pollution/chalking that may cause adhesion problems with the new paint. Using detergent also means you are not relying on the water pressure to do the cleaning, because really all you want is a high-pressure rinse. Anything more than that risks damaging the siding. Spray on the detergent, pressure-wash it off, and that should take care of the cleaning.

Yes, but you need to make sure you give the siding ample time to dry thoroughly. In the case of exposed wood, it could take several days or even more, depending on the climate where you live.

+howtopaintahouse One question, we just stained our redwood deck.... but regardless of that fact.... the question is, will the Jomax/bleach mixture damage the stain or the wood itself? Thanks.
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
I have never seen it damage wood, but it is important to spray it off before it has a chance to dry. So put it on and wash it off in small sections, especially if you are doing it on a hot day or in the sun (it's actually much better to wash a deck when it is shaded...try to plan it that way.)
@RobF3024

If you use a 2500 psi pressure washer with a yellow tip can you remove paint from wood siding without damaging?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
RobF3024 The pressure washer isn't really for removing paint, although it will certainly do some of that, especially if the house is badly peeling. I don't recommend doing too much because you could easily damage the siding. Best to use the pressure washer for cleaning, and scrape by hand, in my opinion. Keep the nozzle 10-12 inches away from the siding to prevent damage.
@hectormontalvo8978
@hectormontalvo8978 6 лет назад
This is how needs to be done, cheap painters they skip the power washing other just rinse the house really quick, and the scraping they just go apply the paint as it is some homeowner get happy with the price till five months later when the paint start getting bubbles or peeling again.

Hi John - great videos. I notice that you use a bug style sprayer to get the detergent on the house. Most of the pressure washers I see have a way of spraying the detergent. Is there an advantage to using the bug style sprayer? Also - I see some videos suggest you spray the detergent from the top to bottom. You go bottom to top. Why? Thanks again.
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 7 лет назад
I don't really like using the built-in detergent sprayer because I think when you rinse with water, there's still a tiny bit of detergent in the line and it leaves a residue. Plus, for your average DIY painter, I think it's easier to just use a simple garden sprayer. As for spraying detergent bottom to top, I just like it to run back down on itself as I go up. I think it covers better.
@fpdima
@fpdima 7 лет назад
Hi John. Thanks so much for the reply. Makes sense to me. One last question. I have an older house with the asbestos shingle siding. The siding is in really nice condition but in need of a new paint job (plus I want a new color). I was told to keep the siding since it's in such great shape despite its age - and paint it. But I have read that I should NOT use a power washer while washing the house. Some say use a good cleaner and a garden house, because pressure washing may damage the asbestos siding. My question is: Should I power wash it or use a garden house and possibly a brush and elbow grease where needed ? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks again..
@Tehcarp
@Tehcarp 7 лет назад
Not only does it cover better. If you soak a house (detergent or no) from the top down you run the risk of freeing extremely fine dirt up high that will run down and bury itself into the bone dry exterior down lower. This flood line of micro dirt can leave a permanent water soluble stain. especially important if you are washing but not repainting the house. I know this is a painting thread but when I ran into this it was a gratis wash of a client's house one year after painting and the stain forced some repainting.

Please Please use a mask when doing the spraying! I suffered extreme distress and lung damage .. must have inhaled some.. John is not wearing one in the video so I neither did I.. this stuff is extremely caustic and the warnings are on the inside of the label on the cleaning solution. Jomax!

+Gretchen Ricker That's a great idea Gretchen and I will add that recommendation to the video. You definitely want to avoid breathing this or any other chemical. I haven't found it to be a problem when working outside.

@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
Yes. Eaves can get very dirty and chalky, not to mention full of cobwebs and such, so it is important to pressure wash them along with the rest of the house.
@TheWarrior831
@TheWarrior831 9 лет назад
would you say doing this step every 2 to 3 years after painting house is a good idea for maintenance?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
TheWarrior831 I would only bother doing it for maintenance if the house looks dirty, or is susceptible to mold. The chemicals are fairly harsh so it's not something you want to do more than necessary, in my opinion. One situation where it might be a good idea is in a high vehicle traffic area where a lot of car exhaust is being emitted because exhaust and pollution tends to settle onto siding and eventually give it a grimy coating that isn't quite dirt but doesn't look good. Getting that off there can give the house a fresh look.

@handyandy-handyman1454
@handyandy-handyman1454 8 лет назад
scrape & sand as much as you can to get it smooth...use a random orbital sanded. you can send us a picture if you want. You can also use a heatgun to remove the paint which may be the route to go if this an older home. Get it as smooth as you can and use an elastromeric paint like Sherwin Williams Duration and hand paint the siding or trim. It is a thick self-priming paint...although you want to spot prime with some like Zinser 123 on any really rough or raw wood. The thicker Duration paint will help cover over some of the edges in the remaining old paint. We only hand paint...luck!

Is it safe to do this on an old home?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
Brandon Eckert Probably okay, but make sure you don't put the nozzle too close to the wood if it's old and soft because you don't want to do any damage. Also, as always, do not point the spray directly into any cracks or under the siding boards because you don't want water to get behind the siding.

I have seen some folks in my neighborhood, hired painters, use some sort of metal extension telescope or fixed long pole to avoid ladders on double story homes. the pole somehow extended the wand. I was too shy to ask them what it was. Whether they used the pole to paint or only pressure wash I also didn't see. Have you heard of this? Or did I imagine most of it ? LOL

Really appreciate this video! One thing I'd absolutely have to disagree with is the bleach. Bleach does not actually kill mold and in fact it enrages it to grow more aggressive as bleach is mostly water and mold thrives off of water, among other things. We are working with a mold specialist for an issue in our home and they said it's the number one misconception they see is using bleach on mold.

I like your video. However, it seems silly to me why you would wash the 1st floor of the house 1st, then the 2nd. You said yourself, "start from the top, and work your way down". Am I missing something? Thanks for posting all the same though.
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 10 лет назад
I do usually start at the top and work my way down. I think in this case I did the demonstration on a lower area, then went above the roofline to do the upper area. Since the upper and lower areas weren't actually connected by siding, it didn't really make any difference. But you are correct that when washing it's always best to go from top to bottom on every side, otherwise you'll rinse dirt down onto previously cleaned areas.

The house was built in the late 1970s, which is average for the U.S., and the techniques demonstrated on this siding, which is made of engineered wood, apply the same to modern houses built with cement-composite siding such as Hardiplank (very common).

What a complete and total joke using that toy pressure washer. With what you are being shown here just use a bucket and scrubbing brush, rinse it with a hose. This is the most important part of a paint job. So spend a little money and pay a professional with an industrial washer and simplify the process. NO WAY will that tiny pressure washer clean even with JoMax (Excellent product BTW) to the level that is necessary for optimum cleaning. This guy leading you all the wrong way. I would fire one of my people on the spot if they wildly washed down a house as shown. Pressure washing is done in a slow and precise pattern, with the pressure washer output held at the same distance from the surface as much as possible. Cant' emphasize enough how important to start at the top down. When you take a shower to wash your behind first? NO! Using that tiny sprayer, another joke. Spend the money and get a back pack sprayer with 4 gallon capacity and a handle pump or spoil yourself and get a battery operated pump. So you spray from top to bottom, do a final rinse, and your last work is to get the nozzle close to the cement or decking to make sure the surface is clean for where you are going to put down your masking tape. I see a lot of thumbs up here, and this is because this tool is not showing you the proper way to pressure wash. I am licensed California Contractor for over 30 years.
