Fascinating. Another couple and I have the same radios. We will be going on a trip to Alaska together in summer 2023. Seems like adding the truck mounted antenna as you describe would be of benefit. You have an incredible amount of knowledge. Thank you for sharing.
Was thinking about programming a couple channels to high output in case it's needed and leave the others at low. Have you tested range with both output levels and if so, was it a big difference? Thanks for your thoughts and tests of these radios!
Really like the MURS for camping. Hope you continue to test. I got a little better results with a Radio Shack 2 Channel Business Band MURS Base Station/ Mobile picked up for $100.00 on eBay. You are probably losing a little RF power with that antenna extension. Instead try using a direct SMA to UHF on top of the radio without that pigtail, just a suggestion. You could also switch to GMRS which allows you 50 watts from your base station, 5 watts with each handheld. The license fee drops to $35.00 April 19th 2022. This license covers your entire family, even grandparents.
