I had to switch off the Enhanced Metadata format preview feature as for some reason it prevented me from being able to use Tabular Editor at all: community.powerbi.com/t5/Developer/Tabular-Editor-quot-Unable-to-load-Tabular-Model-quot/m-p/1207119#M24638
Thank you for the video about the External Tools feature. I installed July update yesterday, but I was having a different issue: the icon for DAX Studio under the External Tools tab was grayed out. After posting the issue on the community, I got a solution from a member suggesting to check "Store datasets using enhanced metadata format" in the Preview Features in options and it solved my problem. DAX Studio was enabled and working fine. Just wanted to share in case someone is having the same issue...:)

Really useful - thanks Adam (Guy in a cube done good). I was scratching my head with no "External Tools" option on ribbon, and no dir C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Power BI Desktop. Then downloaded latest versions of tools, and they magically appeared - with json files auto created in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Power BI Desktop\External Tools, and now everything working. In case it helps anyone, I have most of my applications (including Power BI Desktop and DAX Studio) installed in a drive other than the C drive. After downloading the latest DAX Studio, I got the External Tools tab/ribbon to show up in Power BI Desktop, but when I clicked on it I got an error saying "Unable to launch external tool - DAX Studio executable not found. Contact the tool author for support". This is because the JSON file that is installed defaults to drive C. I had to manually modify the JSON file to the correct path to get it to work. I'm sure the providers of these external tools will fix this in a future release, but hope this gets you going.
I had to search for the daxstudio.pbitool.json file on my C: drive ( it was in some AppData Local folder), and I didn't even have a Power BI Desktop folder in the directory you display (I had to create it, and the External Tools folder too) - but after copy/pasting the json under the newly-created folders, my External Tools appeared in the PBI Desktop ribbon and the DAX Studio link appeared within.
Great video, as always. One side note though, as for the "remove default summarization" thingy: I prefer writing scripts in the Tabular Editor and execute those to edit things like these, pretty handy now with this "External Tool" change!
This will be interesting for those of us using it in an environment where we don't have admin rights and can't install/uninstall software. We have the March 2020 version now but this is a good heads up for when July rolls out to us.
There is no such dir C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Power BI Desktop in my system. I have installed latest version of all DAX studio on following path: C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local\Programs and still there is no change. Could someone please help me understand the issue and provide some solution to this.
Thanks Adam. Tabular Editor is loaded and shows in tools and the json file is in the correct folder. However, when I try to install the latest DaxStudio update, I get this error. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PowerBI Desktop\External Tools error. An Error occurred while trying to create a file in the destination directory: Access is Denied I did not get this error when installing Tabular Editor. I will try again as Administrator - just a little annoying.

It won't be available until you download the DAX Studio / Tabular editor.. Download the latest versions of DAX Studio and Tabular editor, then you can find the below folder in your PC. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Power BI Desktop\External Tools

Where do we get No More Sums? I'm passionate about removing the default summation too. Clicking through on every case is painful. A quick search didn't show any options. Is Patrick able to make this public in some way? Could scripting in Tabular Editor maybe remove all default summation?
I have other external tools showing up in Power BI Desktop, but even after reinstalling the latest version of Dax Studio (3.0.8) it is not showing up in External Tools. Any ideas?
Trying to get Report Builder to show up on Power BI Desktop, but didn't even have Power BI Desktop registry folder at all, didn't have the key, don't have the directory where the json files are supposed to be and naturally don't have the json files at all. Seems maybe Power BI installation is just fubar or the Report Builder Installation is...or both.

Hi can you please help me. I have values and some list in the same column in powerbi and i am unable to decode the list and there is no solution on internet.
I have the External Tools showing and they mostly work. My issue is that in DaxStudio, when I right click a column and try to show objects that reference, I get an 'Unsupported dependency node discovered' error. I get the same error when trying to use PowerBI Helper now too. Seems to have started after enabling the enhanced dataset metadata. Anyone else see this?
I know the enhanced dataset metadata is still preview and hardening is still underway. I'm not sure as to the specific error you are getting. May be worth filing an issue on the GitHub repo, but my guess is it is currently out of their control. Hopefully it gets resolved in the future.
@@GuyInACube The old 'take a long weekend and ignore it' seemed to do the trick, because now the error is gone. Power BI Helper is not working still, but I get a different error. However, DAX Studio Tabular Editor are working fine. Hopefully I won't see the problem again.
Thanks for this video. Are those external tools supported by Microsoft? Are there risks using them in a company production environment since they don't belong to Microsoft itself?
The external tools tab doesn't show up in the ribbon for me. The json files are in the external tools folder, and the store "datasets using enhanced metadata format" option is enabled. Could language settings be an issue? On the documentation page it says "If the current user’s locale is a translated locale, editing objects in the field list does not work correctly using the current version of Power BI Desktop."
Just installed DAX Studio 2.14 on a new Windows machine and the json file didn't get generated. Any ideas? Edit: Found it. I had opted to install DAX Studio for just me instead of all users. It put the json file in a different location. Copy/Paste and back in business.
I have Power BI Desktop installed as an app from Microsoft Store, as opposed to installed as a traditional application. This seems to result in no Power BI Desktop folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\. Is there a way to use External Tools when PBI Desktop is installed as an app from Microsoft Store?
