Forests of Judean date palm trees once covered ancient Israel, from Lake Galilee to the Dead Sea.
The fruit of the tree symbolised life and prosperity and was praised in ancient literature for its unique medicinal properties. But the dates of Judea were made extinct by the Middle Ages.
Now a team of scientists has succeeded in resurrecting the ancient tree.

As a horticulturalist are you not in shock hearing some of these stories due to how crude they are handled? They have these priceless samples and they are just handed out to some woman. Who could have very well ruined all the seeds and made then nonviable. Doesn't have a lab or utilize any of the many scientific tools/procedures to increase viability of the seeds. There are plant hormones that the seeds can be soaked into a solution of. The seed coat can be removed. There are chemical soaks that can be used like succinic acid+GABA. I believe I read somewhere hyperbaric pressure chambers helped too. Near infrared light stimulation and so on and so on. She just threw them in a bottle warmer and whatever happens happens. Instead of giving every possible chance to bring to life such priceless specimens. Are you not upset with such things handled in such a frivolous way? Because as a layman hobbyist I am. These samples should have never been handed out to this woman they should have been at an agricultural/bio lab at a state university in Israel. They got lucky the samples were not all wasted.

A very nice story. I appreciate their work personally. I'm not a horticulture expert by any means but I saved an heirloom pear tree from a friend's farm that had been downed by a storm. The tree was strong enough to bear fruit one last time laying in the yard cut off from it's roots. We saved over a hundred seeds and wintered them in the freezer. The next spring I planted them inside and I had over 60 seedlings growing in my living room in a large bay window. At his farm now there are 12 survivors that are 10 years old. It felt good to have done that, so I can only imagine how these ladies feel. Good work!

For the last century or so, a lot of horticultural work has been done to make commercial crop plants non-propagating. That way, the farmers have to go back to the seed-sellers every year (or tree-commercial-lifetime in this case) to buy more seed. Which means bigger sales and profits for the seed companies. The laws of business apply. What I want to know is - is there any evidence that there half-dozen-odd cultivars of date were noticeably different from modern crop breeds (can people tell, in blind trials) and what the evidence is for whether the strains actually went extinct. Or whether they're indistinguishable from the last few generations of commercial dates palms. You would expect farmers to have a good reason to plant *this* cultivar of dates, not *that* one (when they need to plant new trees), so presumably the cultivars in use in (say) 1950 were better (bigger crops, more reliable harvests, sweeter taste, whatever) than whichever cultivars hadn't been propagated for the last thousand years. Which reminds me - time to water the windowsill plants!

You forgot that they were considered to have been extinct for _millions_ of years. That makes it even more incredible. It was really hard to buy one here in Germany, but I managed to find one to buy for my grandpa's birthday. I got some people from my family to pay it together with me, so if was just 25€ per person. Unfortunately it doesn't have a nice shape because it wasn't grown from seed, but from a stick, meaning it's a clone of some adult tree in I think England. I haven't seen the wollemi in a couple of months though, and I hope it's still fine... I discovered the tree when I was 10 or 11 and ever since then I wanted to see one in real life, and they're really cool! They might look like a pine tree or something from a distance, but if you go closer and learn a bit about them, you'll see that they have unique leaves, and just lots of remarkable features. Also, they rise in value when they get bigger (as long as you can still move them I suppose). Really glad to see this species mentioned! I suggested the species to Flora Logic (a show on the RU-vid channel animal logic) several times, but they haven't made a video about it so far unfortunately.

In the US Southwest, indigenous watermelons have been revived from hidden desert caches, that were stored before the conquest -botanists can be very optimistic and hopeful people, and whenever possible, I love to see them allowed access to these ancient, sometimes extinct plants, to bring more biodiversity back to our world. You do realize that the trees in this video never went extinct, right? That the Roman's spread their range to Spain and North Africa and that the date palms traveled the silk road/spice trade routes to India. The Romans taxed the date palm plantations in the area that this video talks about, they didn't destroy them. In fact the palms grew there until a few hundred years ago. If this video is to believed, then I can declare that corn is now extinct because it is not growing on my property despite this land having been a farm in the past. Also, are you confusing Water lotus seeds from China with water lilies from japan? And how did Amerindians have an African plant's seeds?

I'm glad we have older people in the world to teach us the meaning of true value. Finally a humanity with the longevity and mentality to develop wisdom. We are born smart after all, but we achieve wisdom slowly over time and through much hardship and failure. Always remember that to fail means you are testing yourself with difficult things. If your life were to be easy, I am afraid you would miss so much suffering and all that that teaches you. I believe we need to look old when we are. We bear the scar and wrinkles of a painful life that grudgingly gave us success. It's the best things in life that cost so much from our own selves, our fear and sacrifice and heartache. Sadness and loneliness are great teachers. If you haven't experienced great loss and sadness, then you should seek out something or someone that challenges you beyond your hope to meet that challenge.

Such a priceless sample of seeds should have never been handed out to these people in the first place. They got lucky they got some viable plants. They could have just as well ruined all the samples of seeds and made them nonviable. The seeds belonged in the care of biologists in a lab at a state university to germinate with the best technology in the world to increase every chance of success. The frivolous care of such samples should enrage everyone. Think of all the samples that have already been given out to such people and been ruined. This is just a cherry picked story that had a success.

@@litaknowes7294 Correct. They were not equipped for such a task. They never had the resources, and neither does it sound like the education to properly tackle such an important job with such a limited resource(seeds). They could have just as easily ruined all the seeds. Many palm species require very specific and hard conditions to replicate to germinate the seeds, some take 6+ months to almost a year to germinate like the red sealing wax palm seeds. They got lucky they had any to germinate. That risk should have never happened. I don't understand how the seeds were aloud to ever make it even into their hands.

It’s about a relationship the church is the body of Jesus Christ and the bride of Christ covenant is a marriage. Jesus is the way the truth and the Life. In a world we’re there it’s claimed now to be any absolute truth. Jesus the word of God is the absolute truth. Jesus died for our sin and on the third day he was risen. And he loves you and knows everything you have been through and is ready to heal you whenever you cry out for him

It’s a great thought but the amount of genetic diversity and GMO crossed crops makes it almost impossible to bring back indigenous seeds . They are almost always cross pollinated with gmo crops and then they are now owned big agriculture.

@@Highplainsdrifter44 indigenous and heirloom varieties are specially grown to ensure they’re not swapping pollen with GMO or modern hybrid crops. Some plants are notorious for crossing with anything with a stamen, so they have to keep them separated.
