Ninety-three years ago today a group of African American businessmen gathered in Kansas City to form a baseball league. A Chicagoan named Rube Foster led the group. The men who played in the League were heroes in that era of segregation. TheVillageCelebration takes you to the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City for a tour that combines the recollections of a former player and the efforts of a young baseball enthusiast to preserve the legacy of the men who truly created a league of their own.

The speaker in this video is the best ambassador of the Negro League that I've ever seen. He draws me in every time he speaks, gives amazing perspective, and makes me want to find out more about this part of American sports history.

As long as we seem to be arguing who was the best this or the greatest that, here's a little food for thought...Ichiro Suzuki wasn't allowed to play in the major leagues until he had completed the required 7 seasons of baseball in the Japanese League. He STILL wound up with over 3000 hits and made the greatest outfield throw I ever saw and I saw Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Trout, Jones and everyone in-between. Just to add a little something to the argument...I am posting this on April 19, 2022 and this past weekend, Ichiro threw out the first pitch at a Mariners' game. The pitch registered 94mph on the radar. He wasn't a pitcher. He's almost 50 years old and has been retired for several years. How many others have we not seen and how good were they?

such an under reported, and important part of American history. how dare anyone deprive anyone else of the rights we are all take for granted, and, it aches to think how many great men (and women) were held back from their lifetime callings.

Great video. I hadn't heard that Satchel played for the House of David. That would make for a great movie, maybe one centered on Satchel's life.

My father played for one of the three H of D teams in the 20s and 30s. He talked often about playing and especially about Sachel Paige and how good he was,

Why did you guys stop selling the Negro League caps. I brought from you and wear them with pride in the UK, explain what they mean to people over here, Black or white. Its part of all black history not just American Black history.
